Nevada IA Woman Upset // Fire Trucks Used in Former Fire Chief's Funeral Procession

Rhonda Applegate currently plans to run for city council in Nevada, IA. She is currently in the news after posting a video criticizing the use of fire and emergency vehicles at the funeral procession of former Colo Fire Chief Mark Farren, who recently died of cancer after serving with the Colo Fire Department for 32 years:
This is just another example of inappropriate use of our emergency services and vehicles! This man was not even a Nevada fire fighter. The death of or firefighter should not be more special than any death. We do not use emergency personnel, or employees to honor people, and firefighters, police, soldiers, ems, etc are just people like all of us. I am sorry for Mark's family. But I need to address this issue as a potential city representative. I also received a private message from a citizen, asking me to address this, as well as our girls sports teams being allowed to use our equipment, and personnel. As a delegated representative, I will make sure that our resources are no longer abused.
Those with the Nevada Fire Department dismissed Applegate's concerns:
Nevada Fire Department leaders said processions like these aren't a question of cost, but one of tradition. "I would think after 40 years of dedicating his entire life to someone other than himself, boy the last thing we could do was dedicate a little time," said Ray Reynolds, director of the Nevada Fire and EMS Department. Nevada firefighters volunteered to take part in the procession. Reynolds said the only cost was less than $50 for the tank of gas used in the truck.

"People do provide their opinion and we respect that as far as this department. We will continue as a department to respect the tradition of the American fire service," said Reynolds.
As far as I've been able to see, pretty much every commenter has disagreed with Applegate's position, which might not bode well for her campaign.

A quick online search reveals that Applegate has a history of disagreements with her local government, including the time that the City of Nevada forced her to get rid of her 30-inch-tall horse Putt-Putt back in 2004 and the time back in October 2014 when she received a $385 littering fine for dumping horse manure in front of Nevada City Hall.

You can watch the entire funeral procession video at this link.

United Church of Christ's General Synod 2015 Passes Resolution Opposing Anti-LGBT Religious Exemption Laws

As LGBT people continue to make strides socially and politically, various religious institutions have sought additional "religious exemption" laws. It doesn't matter if a state or a community passes an anti-discrimination ordinance that prohibits bias on the basis of sexual orientation. They want the ability to discriminate without repercussion.

My own United Church of Christ just recently wrapped up General Synod 2015, a national gathering of UCC leaders and members. General Synod is known for reviewing and passing a variety of resolutions, usually coming from the progressive end of the Christian stick.

Case in point, General Synod 2015 passed a resolution encouraging local churches and members to speak out against "religious exemption" laws:
The resolution calls on all congregations and settings of the church to faithfully advocate against any legislative effort or executive order that attempts to "establish a broad 'religious exemption' to laws protecting the equal rights of persons of any sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression," according to the text of the resolution. Such laws threaten to "rob persons of any sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression of the security that they will not be denied services, employment or even a place to live on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or marital relationship."

"Essentially, 'religious exemption' is 'Plan B' for the opposition to marriage equality in the United States," says Andy Lang, the Open and Affirming Coalition's executive director. "By establishing broad religious exemptions, they hope to limit the application not only of marriage equality but of any existing or future laws protecting LGBT people from discrimination in housing, employment, public accommodations or adoption."
As you can guess, there is a faction within the UCC who is upset over this resolution.

Josie & the Pussycats VS Alexandra in B&V FRIEND COMICS DOUBLE DIGEST #244!

I wrote late last month about a cool short story featuring Sabrina the Teenage Witch in one of the recent digests -- drawn by one of my favorite contemporary artists, Gisele. I noted before that she gave me a heads-up about another upcoming commissioned story for Archie Comics, except this one would feature Josie and the Pussycats. I've been waiting for months, but the wait is finally over!

Check out B&V FRIENDS COMICS DOUBLE DIGEST #244, which just got published this week. It features a great lead story featuring Josie and the Pussycats -- but really starring Alexandra!

It seems that the Pussycats are auditioning for a summer concert series. No problem, right? Wrong! Alexandra is in town and she wants that concert series spot -- and she really has no qualms about knocking Josie, Valerie, and Melody out of the competition!

Every time Alexandra pulls her gremlin act, Josie comes up with a new performance solution. Which means that Alexandra has to keep rising to the occasion. But how far will she go to ruin things for the Pussycats??

"Showstopper" is written by J. Torres, penciled by Gisele, inked by Rich Koslowski, lettered by Jack Morelli, and colored b Digikore Studios.

Archie Meets the Ramones??

I've been away this weekend at BritishFest, otherwise I would have shared the news earlier: ARCHIE. MEETS. RAMONES.

Archie Comics will be publishing a one-shot comic book called ARCHIE MEETS RAMONES, written by Alex Segura and Matthew Rosenberg and drawn by Gisele. It's scheduled to come out some time in 2016, in order to coincide with Archie Comics' 75th anniversary and the Ramones' 40th anniversary:
"Working on something like 'Archie Meets Ramones' is not only surreal, but too good to be true," Segura said in a statement. "Like my co-writer Matt Rosenberg and artist Gisele, I'm a huge Ramones fan. Having the band crossover with Archie seems perfect and completely insane at the same time. Fans can expect a fun, rockin' and heartfelt extra-sized adventure that will stand up there with some of the best Archie crossovers ever. Which is saying a lot!"

The seminal band of New York's defining punk scene, the Ramones were active from their '70s heyday through the mid '90s, however all original members have since passed away. The bands likeness are controlled by Ramones Productions Inc. -- a company ran by Johnny Ramone's widow Linda.
I really cannot wait for this comic book! It's such an oddball project. Plus it has artwork by Gisele. How can I resist?

As noted in an earlier post, I was away at BritishFest this past weekend so both dogs went to doggy daycare for an extended stay. Nero always has a blast, but Ms. Lion seems to have enjoyed herself as well... despite the heat.

Response to the Newspaper Letter Writer Who Worries that Gay Marriage Will Destroy America

$

So this letter appeared this weekend in the Press-Citizen expressing concerns about same-sex marriage in America:
America is well on its way to moral destruction. As civilizations have proceeded down the pathway of moral deterioration, the acceptance of same-sex relations has typically triggered the final stages of social implosion. Calling a union of two persons of the same sex a “marriage” is a misnomer.

In the Bible and human history, marriage is a divinely ordered institution designed to form a loving, permanent union between one man and one woman for one purpose: of propagating the human race. The “traditional” family unit is also the foundation for a strong society.

Homosexuality goes against this and the very laws of nature, science and creation. It is about “a choice” of the 3 percent who engage in it — not a civil right; to call it that is a slam to the black community and everything they have accomplished. The highly respectable leader Martin Luther King Jr. was opposed to homosexuality and today would (wrongly) be called a bigot or homophobe. According to the CDC, it’s a very unhealthy lifestyle as homosexual men have much higher rates of HIV infections, syphilis cases, Hepatitis A & B cases; and have major depressions; and bipolar/anxiety disorders. Like any immoral sexual act outside of a healthy (man/woman) marriage, there is a price to pay. This country will ultimately pay the price if we continue on this path.
I'm always curious about Iowans who express concerns over the existence of same-sex marriage -- particularly since Iowa has been a marriage equality state for over six years. There have been a handful of hiccups, but it's mostly been a non-issue.

I'm also intrigued when people point to the Bible and say that it has always had "one man and one woman" model -- particularly when you consider the various types of plural marriages that existed within the Bible. Not to mention, plural marriages have continued to coexist with monogamous relationships in different corners of the world. They might not be prevalent here in the USA, but they exist elsewhere.

As for Martin Luther King Jr., it's worth noting that his wife has indicated that he would have been in support of LGBT rights and possibly marriage equality itself, even while his surviving daughter denies this. Either way, he's been gone for over four decades.

As for STD rates, marriage equality doesn't increase opportunities for infections. On the contrary, it would seem to reduce the likelihood of sexually transmitted infections -- assuming that a married couple is sexually monogamous. STD's don't generate on their own, after all.

I would argue that America's moral nature has been eroding for decades -- not because of LGBT people, but because of the way we as a society treat our working people and our environment. But it's easier to blame everything on an admittedly small group of Americans and ignore the more prevalent elephant within our country. I truly worry about the price that we're continuing to pay for ignoring these economic and environmental realities.

Dent County, MO, Orders One Year of Mourning over Gay Marriage Ruling // Later Reconsiders Decision following Negative Public Reaction

The County Commission in Dent County, Missouri, was very upset that the U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of nationwide gay marriage in its Obergefell v. Hodges case. The commissioners were so upset that they voted yesterday to enter into a year of mourning. The three-member commission unanimously passed a resolution that would lower flags to "just below half staff" every month on the 26th to mourn the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling.

Reactions, both locally and nationally, were negative. This inspired plans for a special session of the Dent County Commission later today or tomorrow, which is expected to rescind their previous order to lower the flag to "just below half staff":
“I’ve had a lot of personal one-on-one dialogue with members of the military,” Skiles told The Salem News Tuesday morning via telephone. “It’s a mixed bag, some support it (flag lowering) and others find it extremely offensive, and that was not our goal at all.”

Word spread quickly across the internet Monday of the commission’s flag lowering action...

The news spread quickly via Facebook, with a majority of users voicing protest, while a smaller number applauded the actions of the commissioners...
The commission voted unanimously on the motion Monday saying they would lower the flags for one year of “mourning” on the monthly anniversary of the Supreme Court’s June 26 decision that gay couples have the constitutional right to marriage.
Commissioner Darrell Skiles personally volunteered yesterday to lower the flags to less than half-staff every month on the 26th to signify his protest against the "court's stamp of approval of what God speaks of as an abomination." Commissioner Dennis Purcell approved of the flag-lowering "100 percent" and now fears that polygamy will soon be legalized. And Commissioner Gary Larson wants his constituents to know that he believes that "those supporting gay marriage are 'mixed up in the head.'" He's also tired of minority groups always getting what they want.

Meanwhile, only one gay couple has applied for a marriage license in Dent County. They are James (59) and Gary Cotner (65). They have been a couple for the past 31 years and have wanted to get married for decades.

Vampironica: Archie Horror's Third Title??

Do you remember back in March when Archie Comics announced their new Archie Horror imprint and simultaneously hinted at an unspecified third title? Here is how Roberto Aquirre-Sacasa hinted at the new title:
I can tell you that it will be centered around a major Archie character,” teases Aguirre-Sacasa. “She has appeared in one of our books before. And [the book] will be in a genre we have not explored or even hinted at in Sabrina—in Afterlife, we’ve only hinted at in a tiny, tiny bit. And it will be set in the present.”
Which caused everyone to think about supporting characters like Josie and the Pussycats or Cheryl Blossom or even Two-Fisted Toni Topaz! Even those characters seemed like stretches because she (the character) was supposed to have only appeared in one of Archie Comics' titles. Obviously, everyone appears everywhere in these books.

But it seems that we were thinking too broadly with our guesses. What if we weren't looking for an Archie Horror take on an existing character, but instead looking for an Archie Horror title about a previous one-off take on a classic Archie Comics character.

I'm talking about Vampironica, a vampiric version of Veronica Lodge who previously appeared in BETTY & VERONICA #261 and 262! Plus, she was "hinted at (in) a tiny, tiny bit" in AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #1. Veronica was dressed in a Vampironica costume at the school dance in that issue.

The talk picture was shown to Archie Comics fans at this past weekend's San Diego Comic Con. The image by Francesco Francavilla also began circulating this weekend on Twitter. It was strongly implied, according to an online acquaintance who attended the SDCC Archie Panel, that the Vampironica image was the source of Archie Horror's third title.

So, it's looking like Archie Horror's new third title will be a vampire-themed book. Unless they're just tossing a curve-ball at us!

The Archie // Dede // Jughead Love Triangle Returns in JUGHEAD & ARCHIE COMICS DOUBLE DIGEST #14!

I was pretty excited when I opened up my copy of JUGHEAD & ARCHIE COMICS DOUBLE DIGEST #14 today! Perhaps you remember when I wrote about a new girl in Riverdale named Dede back in issue #12? She recently took over the day-to-day operations of her mother's comic book shop. Archie naturally had a huge crush on Dede, but she could hardly be bothered. Instead, Dede is all about Jughead! And Jughead, of course, doesn't care. But it's a great broken love triangle and I hoped back then that we would see more of Dede and her dog Cosmo!

We don't get to see any Cosmo in this short story, but Dede makes a fresh appearance in this latest issue! Which got me hopping for joy!

Here's the story: A new superhero movie -- "Protectors of the Planets" -- is playing this weekend in Riverdale. Figuring that she would like seeing a comic book-inspired movie, Archie plans to ask Dede out to see the movie. However, our new heroine was quicker on the draw and managed to ask Jughead to the movie first! Juggie agrees -- but under the condition that Archie is allowed to tag along.

So you have Archie one-way dating Dede, with Dede one-way dating Jughead, and Jughead just trying to enjoy the popcorn! Awkward!

As usual, this proves to be a comedy of errors! I'll leave it up to you to see how things turn out!

Meanwhile, check out the Protectors of the Planets. Don't they look familiar??

"Honey Boo Boo's" Uncle Poodle & Partner Alan Plan to Legally Marry in Georgia

Radar Online posted an article announcing that Lee "Uncle Poodle" Thompson of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" is planning to marry his partner Alan Steveson. This isn't entirely news. The guys have been talking about being engaged for months. Heck, they had a commitment ceremony -- officiated by Mama June Shannon -- during the final unaired season of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo."

The big difference now is that the US Supreme Court ruled last month in favor of nationwide same-sex marriage. So Lee and Alan -- who'd been off-and-on searching for out of state wedding venue options -- have now announced that they plan to get married in Georgia, which had previously been a marriage inequality state:
RadarOnline.com can exclusively reveal the Southern lovebirds and uncles to pint-sized former pageant queen Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, 9, are planning their dream ceremony.

“They want to get married on Jeckyll Island,” a source close to the couple tells Radar, referring to the popular beach destination in their native Georgia. “They envision saying their vows beneath the famous Spanish moss-covered trees.”
According to Facebook, Lee and Alan are still working on details. I'm not even sure that they have a wedding date yet.

Radar reports that they want another reality TV personality -- such as Caitlyn Jenner or Snooki -- to officiate at the wedding. Personally, I think they could do better.

Congrats, guys!

TLC Cancels "19 Kids & Counting"

It's taken a while, but TLC finally canceled "19 Kids & Counting"following revelations that eldest son Josh Duggar (formerly a leader within the Family Research Council) had "forcefully fondled" five girls -- including at least two of his sisters -- when he was in his teens. The story broken in May 2015, but TLC took a while to make their decision.

Here is their statement:

My hunch is that TLC wants to see how well this one-hour documentary is received. It wouldn't surprise me if this leads to a spin-off series featuring daughters Jill and Jessa, along with their husbands.

My 2015 British Fest Experience!

$

Remember BritishFest? It's a convention on the other end of the state for people who enjoy British TV, movies, games, and books. I went to it last year and had a wonderful time. It was so much fun last summer that we decided to return last weekend.

There were spacing issues last summer -- basically too many people and not enough space(!!) -- so they moved from Omaha, NE, to the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, IA. This was a great move. It ended up being a lot less crowded even though attendance nearly doubled from last summer.

For a while there, I began to wonder if the Fates really didn't want me to attend. Our initial childcare options fell through and we really struggled to come up with a Plan B. It's not that BritishFest is bad for teens. It's just that my own teen really didn't want to come with and I didn't want to drag him along against his wishes unless I had no other options. Fortunately, another option finally presented itself to us early last week. Then Husband Mark found himself unable to get away from work that weekend, which meant that he was only able to come for the first day. Then our ancient cat's pancreas began to fail, leading me to seriously consider euthanasia last Thursday afternoon.

Fortunately, it all came together and I managed to have a fun weekend in Council Bluffs!

I do admit that my Second BritishFest weekend started off rocky. I went to a panel about British Sitcoms and realized that the panelists didn't know everything about their topic. Which wouldn't have been a problem except that they specifically highlighted certain sitcoms for discussion and then admitted that they hadn't actually watched those programs! So I grumbled a bit. I then dripped ketchup on my favorite (and only) "Doctor Who" t-shirt. Which meant I had to switch clothing. I then groused about another panel to Mark. I then struggled to find another panel or event that interested me or that wasn't full.

I then realized that I was bringing stress with me from home and that I really needed to lighten up. BritishFest was going to have its ups and downs regardless of my mood -- and me being in a grumpy mood was just going to make me miss the good moments. Once I forced myself to trust in our son's and our cat's caregivers to contact us if things went awry, I found it a lot easier to relax and have fun with the 2015 BritishFest convention!

My favorite panel on Friday was called "Doctor Who and other BBC Audio Adventures" by James Hodge and John Shoberg. I have always heard about Big Finish and their original "Doctor Who" audio program, but I've never understood how to access them. James and John did a great job of discussing the history behind Big Finish and shared different audio clips, which really got me motivated to buy some stuff of my own. Plus they told me how to digitally purchase the audio adventures and add them onto my iPod. It was really quite simple, but sometimes your need someone to walk you through simple steps! This is good timing, because Big Finish recent began producing audio adventures featuring the original "Survivors" cast. I really want those stories!!

Mark enjoyed a particularly good panel about "Downton Abbey," where panelist Lynelle Phillips shared how she designed portions of her home to look like something out of this popular British program.

Saturday morning started out a bit shaky. My first two preferred panels ("New Zealand in Film & TV" and "British TV History 1960's to 1980s") didn't happen. The panelists didn't show up!

I ended up going to a panel about "Monty Python" instead, which was also hosted by James Hodge and John Shoberg. They also had some audio clips of favored sketches and then invited audience members to shared their favorite "Monty Python" moments. Unfortunately, I've only seen a couple of the movies, so the various punchlines didn't mean much to me out of context. But the audience sure was animated!

After a lunch break, I returned to watch "Spirit of Sherwood" with Mark Ryan -- one of BritishFest's featured guests. He played Nasir in "Robin of Sherwood," Quartermaster Hal Gates on "Black Sails," and Bumblebee in the various "Transformers" movies. The BritishFest attendees love Mark and it's easy to tell why. He's funny and down-to-earth and he tells a lot of good stories!

I then watched the first performance of the Timey Wimey Puppet Show, which is a Kansas-based puppeteer that does great comedy sketches featuring various "Doctor Who" characters. I was actually quite fortunate to have attended the Mark Ryan even immediately prior to the puppet show. There was a huge line to the event and I was already sitting in the second row! If you ever get a chance to watch the Timey Wimey Puppet Show in person, do it. Follow the above link to find out why! Actually, follow this link to catch a montage from the 2015 BritishFest show!

I then attended "Paddington & Pooh: Lessons in Life" by Melissa Ryals and Julianne Harm. This ended up being one of my favorite panels. They were playing Winnie the Pooh music at the beginning of the panel and had us sitting on either end of the room, depending on our preferred bear. I was on the Paddington side of the room. We learned the origins of each bear and then were told various quotes and were encouraged to guess which bear they came from. There were a lot of kids at this event. We were invited to share our favorite Pooh or Paddington moments. If we shared, we received a ticket. This was great for motivating the kids to participate. They then did a raffle at the end of the panel and prizes were awarded -- though none to me. But it was different and a lot of fun!

I then attended a "Red Dwarf" panel by John Sullivan and John Shoeberg. We learned a bit about the show's premise and characters and discussed some of our favorite moments. Plus we got to watch a few clips, which is always fun!

After a supper break, I attended a panel called "British Paranormal Places" by John Powers from the Honey & the Nerd Paranormal Podcast. This panel explored many of the traditional paranormal creatures originating out of the United Kingdom. He also shared information originally uses to explore evidence of ghostly activity and compared these tools with their modern-day equivalents.

I then went to my room to check on the cat's health and to watch some of my favorite British programing on Nebraska Public Television ("Doc Martin" and "As Time Goes By"). It's worth noting that a Steampunk Ball was going on during this time, but I don't do that so I didn't go. But many other people had a blast there!

Later this evening, I returned to the convention center and participated in a late-night panel put on the guys that produce the Traveling the Vortex Podcast. We all watched "A Good Man Goes to War" from the sixth season of "Doctor Who" -- and live-tweeted throughout the show! It's sounds geeky and it really is. But it was also a lot of fun. I managed to get in a few well-received jokes. All in all, it was a lot of fun.

I finally went to bed and returned the next day for a panel about the "Merlin" television program by Amber Comstock. This was her first panel, but she did a pretty good job. We talked about the origins Merlin and compared him and those around him with the characters portrayed on the television program. We then talked about some of our favorite "Merlin" moments.

Lastly, I attended a "Countdown! Game Show" panel by Connor McCoy -- where audience members were randomly selected and competing in a series of letter and number quizzes for a British teapot. This was my other favorite panel. I'd never seen "Countdown" before, but it was truly much fun to watch the games -- and try to outguess the contestants!

There were a few more panels after this, but I really needed to leave in order to get back to Iowa City before it got too late in the day.

I plan to return to BritishFest again in 2016 and likely will return again for the entire weekend. I know that I said this last year, but I really want to cosplay next year (here is what I'm thinking of for next summer: here or here). I also have a few panel ideas that I've already plotted out. I will submit those ideas later this summer and see if they are accepted.

Once again, I really want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who organized BritishFest. It takes a lot of time, energy, and commitment to pull everything together. Everyone did a marvelous job. Thanks from Iowa City!

I was catching up with my podcasts late this past week. One of those podcasts was Riverdale Podcast, where Jonathan reviewed ARCHIE #1. He falsely identified Sheila Wu as Ginger Lopez, which prompted me yesterday morning to give him a call and correct him.

My call was included on this morning's program, which is always fun!:
Hey Jonathan! It's Jon from Iowa City! I was calling you. I had just heard your latest podcast about ARCHIE #1. I apologize for calling in so late and hopefully I'll make it for the show. I was busy at a local convention all weekend and I'm just catching up with my podcasts.

You were talking about ARCHIE #1 and about Ginger Lopez being in it, but actually that red haired girl -- the girl with red bangs is actually Sheila Wu. And then the girl that's with Sheila and Kevin, that's Maria... I forget her last name. The one who dated Frankie in the old continuity. So that's who Kevin's little gang is right now. So I thought I would let you know about that.

The other thing, as long as I'm calling. I just wanted to thought I would call and say how much I've been liking the digests lately from Archie Comics. I have appreciated how much that they have been publishing new stories featuring a lot of classic characters. We just had Gisele doing artwork on Sabrina and Josie & the Pussycats in different ones.

Just this last week, we got JUGHEAD & ARCHIE COMICS DOUBLE DIGEST #14. And there's this great character who was introduced in these original short stories called Dede who's taken over the comic book shop. And she's got this weird broken triangle with Archie and Jughead where Archie's chasing after Dede and Dede's chasing after Jughead and Jughead just wants nothing to do with it! And I really like this character and I really hope they keep her around for a while, which is kind of odd considering that they're rebooting a lot of the main titles and yet they're introducing a new character based off the old character designs.

I just thought I'd throw that in. So, I'm just liking a lot of the stuff that's coming out from Archie -- a lot of the Dark Circle stuff. I'm hoping that the Archie Horror books will start picking up more regularly again soon. I'm just liking the whole bunch when they're there.

I will talk to you later! Bye bye!

Squirrel Girl VS Girl Squirrel in THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #7!

$

Hopefully you picked up your copy of THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #7. It was released a couple weeks ago, but I'm just catching up with my comic book stash. This book is the greatest! Perhaps you remember last issue, when Squirrel Girl and her best friend Nancy Whitehead met two new heroes named Chipmunk Hunk and Koi Boi? Coincidentally, these two heroes turned out to be classmates. In case it wasn't clear, Squirrel Girl can speak with squirrels, Chipmunk Hunk can speak with chipmunks, Koi Boi can speak with fish, and Nancy can only speak with people.

Oh, the group also met a new hero named Girl Squirrel -- who actually turns out to be a villain with the ability to whisper bad thoughts into the minds of others!

Case in point, Squirrel Girl starts off the issue struggling to get to class. As you probably remember, she is a student at Empire State University under her civilian identity, Doreen Green. Riots are breaking out everywhere -- over piddly little disputes. For example, a riot breaks out in Doreen's classroom just after her arrival!

After breaking up this latest riot, Nancy Whitehead does a quick wikipedia search and discovers that everyone is being mind-controlled by a Norse god-squirrel named Ratatoskr. Apparently, she runs up and down the world tree Yggdrasil and provokes people with slanderous gossip. No lie.

Squirrel Girl and her Amazing Friends eventually track down Thor and the other Thor and not only learn of Ratatoskr's origins, but learn that she recently broke out of her cage. It's now up to Thor, Thor, and Nancy Whitehead to repair Ratatoskr's cage, which Squirrel Girl, Chipmunk Hunk, and Koi Boi take down the evil god-squirrel!

Our heroic trio manages to track down Ratatoskr in her "Girl Squirrel" guise -- but it's not that easy to defeat an enemy who can insight dissent with her words! Our heroes' squirrel and chipmunk allies are easily scattered by Ratatoskr and then we learn her ultimate goal: worldwide destruction of mankind!

Does even Squirrel Girl have what it takes to defeat a squirrel-god?? We shall have to wait until next issue!

"The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl" is written by Ryan North, penciled and inked by Erica Henderson, colored by Rico Renzi, and lettered by VC's Clayton Cowles.

"Big Brother 17" Spoilers: Trans Houseguest Audrey Facing Eviction // Did She Try to Quit Tonight??

$

You might remember that I've been watching "Big Brother 17" this summer? I wrote last month that this season features a gay cashier named Jason, a bi-lesbian poker player named Vanessa, and a trans media consultant named Audrey. Vanessa has done a pretty good job so far of playing people against each other and orchestrating evictions. Jason has floundered a bit, but has demonstrated good social game. But Audrey has been all over the place.

Pretty much, Audrey played too hard too haphazardly too soon this season. She created alliances with everyone and then tried creating too much drama when she was at the point in the game where you're sometimes better off taking a nap. Unfortunately, she got caught stirring the pot one too many times and now nobody trusts her in the game.

She's pretty much ostracized by the House at this point. Nobody wants to talk game with her, because she can't be trusted to keep her mouth shut. But nobody wants to evict her because they figure that the Jury will vote for anyone except Audrey in the end. She could be in worse spots, but she's spending most of her free-time alone at this point.

Unfortunately, she began aggravating some of the other power-players earlier this week. She told this week's HOH Shelli that Jason was coming after her. Shelli initially believed her, but when she finally asked Audrey for more details, Audrey said that she hadn't actually heard him say this. She said that she got this bit of information from listening to Shelli and her friends talking game. Then Audrey aggravated Clay and then she aggravated Vanessa. It's at this point that the power alliance decided to target Audrey for eviction later this week.

It seems that Audrey found out about this plan over the weekend and decided to reveal all sorts of secrets -- because this would convince them to keep her around or something. Of course, nobody believes Audrey at this point so even though she was revealing truths, nobody believed her.

Anyway, they were preparing earlier this afternoon for the Power of Veto ceremony. It was expected that the veto-holder would take down one of the current nominees and that Shelli would then put up Audrey in his place. She told the rest of the House last night that she wants them all to vote out Audrey -- and it appears that they are planning to do this.

Here's the thing. Audrey went to the Diary Room today and didn't come out. She was there for over five hours. No word from the producers. The rest of the Houseguests just kept waiting and waiting and waiting for the POV ceremony and nothing. They were just left to sit and talk and wonder whether Audrey had bailed from the show.

Actually, the assumption -- from Houseguests and feed-watchers alike -- that Audrey left the show. She appeared to have had a anxiety attack last night and earlier today. And like I said, she was pretty much on her own.

Then...
Then Audrey suddenly exited the Diary Room over five hours after disappearing and isolated herself in the Have-Not bedroom. Nobody knows where she's been and why she was gone so long.

My guess is that the POV ceremony will happen soon. I will check up on the live-feeds then and report developments as I learn them.

Update: I'm back from my haircut...

Tonight's POV Ceremony is over. Vanessa used the POV to save Jason from eviction. Shelli then nominated Audrey as her replacement nominee.

That means that Audrey will be competing for eviction this Thursday against perenial pawn, Johnny Mac.

By the way, Audrey didn't show up for today's  POV ceremony, choosing to remain in bed.

Pat Robertson: Abortion & Same-Sex Marriage Now // Polygamy & Legalized Child Sex Abuse Tomorrow!

Pat Robertson took a meandering stroll down the slippery slope from legalized abortion to legalized sodomy to legalized marriage equality and all the way down to legalized polygamy and child sex abuse and man/animal love affairs.

It happened this morning on this morning's "700 Club" when co-host Terry Meeuwsen shared the following question by a man named Thomas during the program's Bring It On segment: "The pro-abortion community says a fetus isn’t a “human” until born, but they’re obviously human enough to harvest their very human body parts. Yet there are legal experts that say these actions MAY fall within legal parameters. How could this kind of sociopathic hypocrisy possibly be legal?"

Here is Pat's response:
Pat Robertson: The whole thing is screwed up when you have Roe vs. Wade *gibberish* abortion. It wasn’t based on any law whatsoever. Any he made it up on sociological – faulty sociological grounds. And we have this confusion. The Supreme Court has ruled on so many things. They’ve messed things up because they haven’t allowed the reason or our collective consciousness to play, but they’ve come up with these strange rules. Same thing about separation between church and state, etc. So, it’s hypocrisy? Yes!

You watch what’s going to happen now. They’ve said that abortion is a constitutional right. They have said that homosexuality is a constitutional right. They have now said that homosexual marriage is a constitutional right. Watch what happens. Love affairs between men and animals will be absolutely permitted. Polygamy without question is going to be permitted. *Gibberish* More and more and more and more and more…

Terry Meeuwsen: Relationships with children. There have been groups that have been trying to push that for a long time.

Pat Robertson: Well, they’re going to succeed now because intellectually you can’t get around these Supreme Court decisions. The problem is people can’t move anymore. They’re elected official can’t make any decisions and consequently we are stuck with a fixed doctrine of 5 old men on the Supreme Court. Five men with black robes – they’re not all old anymore.

Archie Gets All Camped Out in ARCHIE COMICS DOUBLE DIGEST #261!

I'm so behind with my comic book reviews and summaries. I've decided that I will do the ones I can and not worry about the ones that get past me.

If you know much about me, you know that I love summer camp. I did not get to go to summer camp often when I was a kid and really regret that. As a result, I've made sure that my own boys get the opportunity to go to summer camp. So I'm a sucker when it comes to camp-themed TV shows, movies, and comic books!

Case in point: ARCHIE COMICS DOUBLE DIGEST #261, which features a camp-themed lead story starring Archie and his favorite pals and gals!

If you read the dialogue in the top-right image, you will understand the theme of this story. Archie is excited about being a camp counselor and can't wait to win the affection of his campers. Meanwhile, Jughead is warning him take a step back because Archie always makes a mess of things when he tries to hard.

The rest of the story is prophesy playing out. Scene after scene depicts Archie trying new activity or moment with his campers -- and painfully regretting it. Like when he tries the zipline and manages to give himself a major wedgy!

All of the Riverdale Gang is in this story, but only Veronica, Betty, Reggie, Juggy, Chuck, and Kevin make more than single panel mentions. You'd think that Two-Fisted Toni Topaz would warrant at least two appearances, but no dice!

Still, it's always good to see Kevin Keller in the comic books. He's in charge of the zipline at Camp Witwicky and, luckily for Archie, knows a little first aid!

Check out those mooses!
It wasn't that long ago that Kevin Keller never appeared in the comic book digests. I was worried when his book was canceled that we'd never see him again, but he continues appearing when you least expect him!

"All Camped Out" is written by Gorf, penciled by Fernando Ruiz, inked by Bob Smith, lettered by Jack Morelli, and colored by Digikore Studios. This is a great lead story and you owe it to yourself to track down a copy and treat yourself to a chuckle!

Iowa City Releases Video of Police Officer Tackling & Arresting Teen for Not Leaving Rec Center Quickly Enough

Last month, several local friends began posting on Facebook an uploaded video of a black teen being tackled at the local rec center by an Iowa City police officer. (You can watch the whole thing here)

Initially, it looks like the teen is noncompliant with orders to put his hand behind his back so that he can be cuffed. But then you listen to the teen under the cop's screams and you will hear him state that his arm is pinned. And it does indeed look to me like the teen's arm is pinned under his body by the officer.

I don't know the teen, but several of my friends know him. They vouch for his character. The teen himself wrote on Facebook that police were called to the rec center and told the teens to leave. He said that he asked the officer why they needed to leave and did not receive an answer. He said that he turned to get his back and was tackled by the officer.

I have a teen who's the age of this teen. So I'm somewhat skeptical. But, after watching a 23 minute video released by the City of Iowa City earlier today, I believe the teen. (You can watch the whole thing here) The city also released this PR package to further tell their side of the story.

From watching the video, you have a group of mostly black teens hanging out in the upper area of the rec center. They are talking and occasionally goofing around. Reportedly, there is a meeting going on near there and they complained to the rec center staff that the kids were being too loud. The cop came and told the kids to leave. The one boy spoke briefly to the cop. He turned to leave within 3-4 seconds. The cop then tackled the boy.

Check out these stills and note the time stamps. Once again, check out the video for a clearer understanding of what happened:

I am completely unimpressed with the City of Iowa City right now. Our police need to learn how to respond less aggressively to non-aggressive individuals. The cop completely escalated this situation. I find that completely inappropriate, even if the Iowa City Police Department finds it to be legally justified.

As noted above, I have a son of my own who's in his mid-teens. It is hard for me to not see him being tackled by this cop or another like him. It is hard for me to not imagine him confronting an officer after being kicked out of a public building for doing nothing more than hanging out with his friends and being a bit noisier than some adults might like them to be.

I complained on Twitter about this situations and got directed by the City of Iowa City's PR packet. I questioned why the teen was tackled. I was directed to the chief of police.

UNCANNY X-MEN #35: The Irrationality of Anti-Mutant Hysteria

I was reading UNCANNY X-MEN #35 this week and was reminded how irrational the anti-mutant hysteria is in Marvel Comics.

Case in point: A new mutant attacks her father and a sports team. She's defeated by Cyclops' former students, who've struck out as members of a new team called Hero Squad. One of the team's members is a guy named Fabio Medina AKA Goldballs. He projects gold balls from his body. He ended up being the big hero of this particular fight -- and in the process became an internet sensation:

I mean, he's not your typical hero. He's a "think Hispanic kid" who does funny dances. His mother ends up outing him to the media and he becomes an instant celebrity. He shows up on the cover of all the magazines and begins appearing on all sorts of TV shows:

And then his mother ends up outing him again -- this time as a mutant. It's not that he was hiding it. He was just talking about his image and his powers and his personality. But things suddenly go south:

And then the public turns against Goldballs -- violently:

This is where I don't get Marvel's anti-mutant mindset. What is it about Invisible Woman or Daredevil or Captain Marvel that makes them less scary to the general public than Cyclops or Storm or Iceman?

One moment, the public loves Goldballs. The next moment, he's picking glass from his neck. What changed? Only the public's awareness of his origin. Why does a genetically-inherited power induce irrational hatred compared to a power that comes from some sort of external source of mutation?

Ultimately, I just don't get it...

Can Archie Survive the Sharknado??

I have something to confess. I've never seen "Sharknado." The same thing goes for "Sharknado 2" and "Sharknado 3." Actually, I've seen one scene from the first movie, but that's it. But I love the concept and I hear lots of good things about this crazy film franchise. I'm sure that I will eventually see one or all of these movies. But I have read ARCHIE VS. SHARKNADO, a one-shot comic book published this week by Archie Comics. It was timed to coincide with the premier of "Sharknado 3."

Here's the concept. There seems to be an outbreak of tornadoes on the coasts. And they randomly snag sharks from the ocean. And those sharks then snag nearby people, leading to outrageous and gory confrontations. And, it seems though I need to watch the movies to confirm, you stop the Sharknado by blowing up the tornado. Or something like that.

Basically, there are flying sharks that eat people.

By the way, here's a disclaimer...

This blog entry contains spoilers. If you don't want to know what happens in ARCHIE VS. SHARKNADO #1, the stop reading now. You have been warned!

Back to the show...

ARCHIE VS. SHARKNADO begins in Washington DC. Mr. Lodge is going before Congress to go over some bill that will save the world. Maybe it has something to do with the Sharknados. That was unclear to me. But he took Betty and Veronica with him so that they could sight-see. Unfortunately, the Sharknado strikes Washington DC -- leading to the gruesome death of Mr. Lodge and several other bystanders.

Betty and Veronica team up and manage to slay several sharks. They figure out that the Sharknado is heading towards Riverdale. They realize that they need to get back home to warn their friends and family about the approaching threat -- plus there's a school dance and they need to protect Archie from Cheryl Blossom!

Of course, there's no way that they can outrace the Sharknado. The entire Riverdale Gang is on the beach, celebrating on this enormous party yacht, which appears to be owned by Cheryl Blossom. This is one of those stories when you wonder why Betty and Veronica continue fighting for Archie's attention. They're away for one day and he's already putting the moves on Cheryl. In fact, Archie and Cheryl will remain a couple throughout this story -- even after Betty and Veronica eventually return to Riverdale.

Anyway, the party is quickly attacked by hundreds of hungry sharks -- leading to the deaths of several party guests. Not only that, but ARCHIE VS. SHARKNADO takes out the one character who probably could have stopped this whole shark invasion with one magic spell. It's true. Sabrina the Teenage Witch and her cat Salem were both killed off early in the book. So sad...

The rest of the regulars end up getting back to shore safely -- but realize that the Sharknado is heading straight for Riverdale High School -- scene of the before mentioned school dance! Josie and the Pussycats are performing at the dance -- alongside a band called Quint. I'm assuming that they're from the movies.

Archie and the Gang are too late to warn their classmates. The Sharknado strikes the school and several students -- plus Melody's hand(!!) -- are taken out by the sharks!

The group realizes that they need to take their fight directly to the Sharknado. They arm themselves with all sorts of chainsaws and blades and begin slicing and dicing all sorts of sharks. Their ultimate plan is to disperse the Sharknado using a special bomb of Dilton's creation. Which just seems like silliness -- but that's apparently how the first Sharknado was defeated.

I don't think it's too much of a spoiler to reveal that the Sharknado was eventually defeated. We lost several Riverdale residents, though not as many as you might think. Here is the casuality list: Mr. Lodge, Sabrina, Salem, Reggie, Ms. Grundy, Alexander Cabbott, and countless faceless victims. Plus, there was one absurd laugh out loud moment where Cheryl Blossom loses who bikini top to a passing shark. It still cracks me up!

Ultimately, this was a crazy, nonsense-filled romp. You don't need to be a fan of "Sharknado" to understand what's going on. But I can't help wanting to track down these movies on Netflix and Syfy to get caught up with the larger storyline.

"Archie Vs. Sharknado" is written by Antony C. Ferrante, penciled by Dan Parent, inked by Rich Koslowski, lettered by Jack Morelli, and colored by Andre Szymanowicz & Casey Silver.
