Iowa Wedding Venue Closing to Avoid Gay Weddings // Owners Forming New Non-Profit Ministry

I wrote nearly two years ago about the Gortz Haus in Grimes, IA. It was an art gallery that also offered space for weddings and receptions. They turned away a gay couple who wanted to rent the space. They were specifically turned away on the basis of their sexual orientation. The couple filed a complaint with the Iowa Civil Rights commission, because Iowa clearly prohibits discrimination based on a variety of factors, including sexual orientation.

This case dragged on for a while and eventually the case was settled last year. The Gortz Haus' owners paid $5,000 to the couple that they discriminated against and they agreed to stop discriminating against customers on the basis of sexual orientation. Which they did in January 2015 by ceasing all wedding ceremonies.

But the business isn't surviving without the weddings, so it's been announced that Gortz Haus Gallery will be closing soon.

But don't feel too bad for the Odgaard family. They are in negotiations with a church congregation, who wants to take over the building space. The couple has also founded a nonprofit ministry called God's Original Design Ministry, which will allow them to make money advocating for "traditional" marriage (i.e. not same-sex marriage). As a church and as a religious non-profit, they will have the ability to discriminate against couples on the basis of sexual orientation.

Pat Robertson: Christians Should Shun Their Wiccan Neighbors

Pat Robertson was on the "700 Club" again earlier today and participated in the program's "Bring It On" segment. One viewer wanted to know how to respond to some new Wiccan neighbors.

Short answer? Shun them:
Co-Host: Nick writes: "A family that recently moved into my neighborhood claims to be Wiccan. I have heard from my son some of the things their daughter told him, and it really kind of frightened me to hear about spells and others concepts I've never heard of in the Bible. Should I let my son be friends with their daughter? Should I try to be friends with the family? I'm so unsure. What is the Christian thing to do?"

Pat Robertson: With a thing like that, you look at the Old Testament and it says that you don't intermarry with them and you don't give your sons to their daughters or your daughters to their sons. They'll corrupt you. These people -- you know, they say these are white witches versus black witches. There's no such thing as "good witch." It's all demonic and you don't want your children involved in that stuff. They have power. Don't think it's not real. It is real. But it's real wrong. And I would just say, "you're not permitted to go to their house or have anything to do with them." They might seem to be really pleasant people and all that, but they'll destroy your children. You have to protect them.
This is pretty much what certain Iowa lawmakers did back in April when a Wiccan priestess gave the invocation for the Iowa House of Representatives. Some of them walked out. Others turned their backs to them.

But I'm somewhat surprised that Robertson didn't encourage Nick and his family to at least pray for their new Wiccan neighbors.

Stan Lee: Spider-Man Should Be White & Straight // Stan Lee: Human Torch Black? Great! // What's The Difference?

Sony Pictures has the movie rights to Marvel Comics'"Spider-Man," just like Marvel Studios has the movie rights to "Avengers" and pretty much everyone else besides the "X-Men." One of the upcoming movies by Marvel Studios will be "Captain America: Civil War," which will feature a battle between Captain America and Iron Man. It's also going to feature a variety of other Marvel Comics characters, including Hulk, Falcon, Black Panther, and... Spider-Man.

There has been a question about how Spider-Man will be handled. There was also fan-speculation that the Spider-Man in "Civil War" might be Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker. I would have fully supported that decision. Why not include Miles in the movie? He's a cool character. Give the kid a chance! But it was recently announced that Tom Holland has just been cast as Spider-Man/Peter Parker and that he will be appearing in both the Sony movies and the "Captain America: Civil War" movie.

Stan Lee -- one of Spider-Man's co-creators -- came out in full support of Peter Parker instead of Miles Morales in the movies. Because Spider-Man should be white and straight:
“I wouldn’t mind, if Peter Parker had originally been black, a Latino, an Indian or anything else, that he stay that way,” Lee said. “But we originally made him white. I don’t see any reason to change that.”

Recent leaked Sony documents show that Marvel Comics’ licensing agreement with Sony Pictures for the Spider-Man movies mandate that Spidey should be male, not smoke tobacco nor abuse alcohol, and not be a homosexual “(unless Marvel has portrayed that alter ego as a homosexual).” This caused Gawker to conclude, somehow, that “Spider-Man is a f---ing dork.” That same documents show that Peter Parker, though not necessarily any alternative Spider-Man character, is Caucasian and heterosexual...

In short, Lee feels Peter Parker is well established in the public consciousness after 53 years of being Peter Parker.

“It has nothing to do with being anti-gay, or anti-black, or anti-Latino, or anything like that,” Lee said. “Latino characters should stay Latino. The Black Panther should certainly not be Swiss. I just see no reason to change that which has already been established when it’s so easy to add new characters. I say create new characters the way you want to. Hell, I’ll do it myself.”
Keep in mind that Stan Lee co-created the Fantastic Four. Among the characters is Johnny Storm AKA Human Torch. Who usurped an earlier version of the Human Torch (AKA the android version that operated during World War II). Stan Lee didn't have a problem completely changing the make-up and origin of an existing character to meet the time back then. He doesn't even seem to care about the Human Torch being cast with a black actor in the upcoming "Fantastic Four" movie.

I guess I'm not sure why movie audiences can be expected to cope with a black Human Torch, but not Marvel Comics' newer Miles Morales Spider-Man character.

Anonymous Culture Warrior Leaves Horrible Note for Grieving Widower // Says God Killed His Wife over Same-Sex Weddings

Have you watched the latest "Bachelor" program? I haven't. But that bachelor (who also appears on the latest "Dancing with the Stars" season) is based out of Arlington, IA. Arlington is a small town about two hours north of Iowa City (give or take). I've never been there, but I travel to other areas of Fayette County for work every month or so.

I came across a Facebook post tonight. It seems an Arlington family recently lost their wife/mother due to complications from an illness and surgery. Her death was back in January and it seems like the family is still (understandably) reeling from her death and their loss. They set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for her medical and funeral expenses, which hasn't done very well so far.

The widower the following message on Facebook earlier today, which has gone viral:
I am sorry this is so long....but hate takes awhile...So today as I got in my van at 5:30 this morning I found a note that was left on my drivers seat. I don't talk to very many people in Arlington because I have been too busy with taking care of Shelly and then her funeral and all. So I've pretty much kept to myself. I am a wedding minister, yet haven't performed but a few ceremonies in the last few years because of how life is for us. We set up a gofundme account to cover my wife's funeral expences because we didn't have the money to pay for it. We survive at the moment.....we don't live. I have a huge weight of guilt and pain on my shoulders. I have a hard time getting thru each day without thinking I'd be better off with my wife than here, but I have two great kids and a grandaughter that I love so much and they keep me a lil more on track. We do for ourselves. We have learned that there is a lot of bad in this world....and now I have found the center of evil. I have never been hurt by a person's words like I am today. Someone decided to.throw as much evil and hatred at me as they could. This note is from someone in the town I live in...that I chose.to be a part of. I was wrong. Whoever wrote this hateful note...wow...I just have no words..your the reason my heart hurts twice as much today. My tears today belong to you...I can't believe you think I deserve to be hated for reasons that make no sense in b this day and age..here is the note found in my van.. this is from my town..my home..sigh..this is why I don't want to be around anymore
The picture that's attached immediately below this was attached to his post:

Click the image to see it up close, but here is the text:
Reverend McBride: We recently discovered that you perform same sex weddings. That disturbs many of us in this community. Normally when someone in town dies the community comes together to do what we can for that persons family. As you may or may not have noticed is when your wife died, no one came and brought meals or even so much as condolences. That's because as a minister that performs gay weddings, you deserve all the bad that you brought upon yourself. Your wife died because God hates you for the abomination you have become by preaching His word while also catering to queers. We in this community hope you suffer as much as possible and realize that unless you change your faggot friendly ways, your suffering will only get worse. Do this town and your family a favor and get a rope and hang yourself. People like you disgust us. We don't want or need your kind around us making our town look worse. I personally hope you die a slow and ugly death. Maybe you can catch aids from your friends. Just die.
It seems that someone has already accused him of writing the note himself on local radio. This just compounded his grief.

Anyway, I just gave to his GoFundMe campaign and I encourage you to help out. My sister was in a similar situation six years ago. Not the culture war crap, but an unexpected death and very little money to pay for the funeral. It isn't a good position to be in.

U.S. Supreme Court Rules for Gay Marriage! Gay Marriage Now Legal Nationwide!

Did you hear? The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of marriage equality earlier today!:
No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate,  marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization's oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.
This decision has less impact on me than others. I was married and have lived in Iowa for the past 6+ years. SCOTUS already ruled that the federal government needed to respect and honor our marriage.

But this is huge for those same-sex couples who live in other portions of the United States who have been denied the rights, responsibilities, and liberties of marriage. Additionally, it should provide portability of our marriages when we travel throughout our country.

This is a great day!

Sabrina's Aunt Hilda Learns about Being Mortal in BETTY & VERONICA COMICS DOUBLE DIGEST #234!

Archie Comics has a lot of great artists. One of my Top Two contemporary favorites (ties with Fernando Ruiz) is Gisele. She has great style that's both classic and unique. I just love her work. Anyway, I'm Facebook friends with her and have chatted with her a couple different times. A few months ago, she gave me a heads-up that she had been commissioned to do a couple different short stories for some of Archie Comics' digest comic books. Not featuring Archie or Jughead or Betty or Veronica, but Sabrina and Josie & the Pussycats!

I have been watching out for these stories and knew that they would be published soon. Her "Sabrina" short story just got published this week in BETTY AND VERONICA COMICS DOUBLE DIGEST #234 -- and I almost missed it! Usually, Archie Comics puts their new stories in front of the digests. This time around, they lead with a George Gladir story. It's been particularly chaotic here at home recently, so I assumed that there were no new short stories in this digest and moved on!

I should have looked further in the book! About midway through, there were an assortment of stories featuring Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Most of them are classic reprints, but the first Sabrina story is brand-new. And it is funny!

This is classic Sabrina the Teenage Witch in this story. This isn't the darker version who's been showing up in CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA or AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE. It's also not the goth version who showed up briefly in ARCHIE VS. PREDATOR. This is the more traditional version of the character, complete with trouble-making Aunt Hilda and spell-induced gags!

Here's the nutshell: Aunt Hilda doesn't understand why Sabrina insists on hanging out with her mortal friends so she casts a spell on herself to look like an attractive teen girl. What follows is a series of run-ins with Sabrina's friends.

Harvey jokes about Aunt Hilda to "Cousin Hildy," and she casts a wicked spell on his chili! Amy attempts to play a prank on Sabrina, so Cousin Hildy uses her magic to teach her a lesson about being two-faced! And don't forget about Riverdale's resident blow-hard, Reggie Mantle!

This is a great story. Not only does it feature crisp, sexy art. But it features quick-paced story-telling with funny gags -- everything that I love in my funny books!

"Transformation Traumas" was written by Tom DeFalco, penciled by Gisele, inked by Rich Koslowski, lettered by Jack Morelli, and colored by Digikore Studios.

Three LGBT Contestants on this Season's "Big Brother 17"

"Big Brother 17" started last week and we learned, among other things, that this is the most LGBT representative cast in American Big Brother history.

Here is what I'm talking about:

First, we have Audrey. Audrey is a 25-year-old digital media consultant from Georgia. She is athletic and appears -- from watching the feeds -- to be a bit of a trickster. Audrey is also the first transgender contestant to compete in Big Brother history. She came out to the other houseguests fairly early -- which was probably a wise move. Unfortunately, she had to come out twice as a second group of houseguests were introduced to the Big Brother House on the second night. So far, this revelation hasn't caused her any trouble. But we shall see how long this tolerance lasts.

Then there is Vanessa. Vanessa is a 32-year-old professional poker player from Las Vegas. In other words, she's all about the bluff! She is also fairly athletic and competitive. And, according to the show, was once engaged to a guy, but is now with another woman. I'm not sure if she's out yet to the house about being bi.

And lastly, we have Jason. Jason is a 25-year-old cashier who lives in his mother's basement. He's quick-witted and has a strong personality. This gay guy has already won one of the first two "Battle of the Block" competitions. As such, he gets to nominate two people for eviction. Normally, I think that it's crazy to get the Head of Household job during the first week, but Jason is pretty scrawny. He won his competition with pretty much no effort. This initial win might actually serve him well in the short-term.

"Survivors" 40th Anniversary: Episode 13 ("A Beginning")

This is the thirteenth in a series of blog posts dedicated to the 40th anniversary of BBC's "Survivors" television series. Survivors followed a core group of characters who managed to survived a devastating viral outbreak -- one which managed to kill off somewhere between 95-99% of humanity. Society has crumbled and now those who remain must relearn the old way if they have any hope of surviving much longer.

Our last episode featured an armed stand-off between our group of survivors (particularly Greg Preston and Jenny Richards) versus a trio of traveling bandits over a tanker full of petrol. The petrol was needed to trade for food and seed in a neighboring community. Fortunately, Greg came out on the winning end of that stick -- even though the three deaths gutted him.

Unfortunately, we learned at the beginning of this episode ("A Beginning"), that the seed was spoiled and essentially useless. Everyone is fighting. They blame Greg for trading their petrol for bad grain. Arthur is complaining about the sheep. Paul is complaining about others not clearing out the pig slop. Emma is complaining that she always has to light the fire in the stove and that the children don't do enough work. Vic is complaining that John left the front gate open, which led to a fox killing off most of the chickens. And Greg is complaining that he's doing all of the work.

And everyone is complaining to Abby, because she's the go-to leader of the bunch.

And she's having none of it. It's clear that Abby is burnt out. Jenny suggests that she take some time off. Go search for Peter again or track down her old boyfriend, Jimmy Garland. Abby just doesn't see how the others can do without her.

The group is then confronted with a group of travelers. The group's leader tells Greg that they'd had a small farm about 50 miles from there, but they had been chased off by an armed militia. They are now looking for a new home. The travelers don't want to settle at the Grange, but they do have one concern: a very sick woman.

Our survivors have a powwow (minus Abby, who's hiding away in her room) and decide that they cannot risk allowing the sick woman in their settlement. They are afraid of infecting their group -- particularly the children. The travelers are sent away with the sick woman.

Our survivors then discuss the threat of outside "foxes" (i.e., armed bandits and militia), who would sneak into their proverbial hen-house and destroy everything that they have built up so far. They aren't too hopeful of their ability to defend themselves from a prolonged attack:

Everybody immediately agrees, which prompts Arthur to suggest that they send out a representative to each of the neighboring settlements with a letter of invitation. The groups would gather at the Grange in a couple days to iron out a mutual agreement of joint defense. They are hopeful that this "federation" could also turn to each other to meet everyone's shared trade and food needs eventually.

They pull out a map and Arthur agrees to bike out to all of the settlements and back first thing tomorrow.

That's when we discover that the travelers left something behind when they left. Meet Ruth (played by Annie Irving):

Ruth
Abby, Emma, Charmian, and Jenny all pull rank on Greg and bring the sick woman into the building. They aren't sure exactly what she has, but she feverish and pretty much out of it. She won't survive if left on her own -- which is exactly what Greg wants to do with her. The women agree to take shifts caring for the sick woman.

Except that Abby doesn't show up for her next shift. She had enough after her last fight with Greg and decided to run off to find Jimmy Garland!

Abby learns that Knox got himself killed a few months ago. Knox's people didn't know how to function, so they turned to Garland to lead them. Thus, "Garland's War" was effectively ended! He now retreats occasionally to a little cottage whenever he needs to get away from the others. He takes Abby to this cottage and immediately seduces her.

Abby confesses that it has finally sunk in that everything from before -- society, her husband, her old life -- it's all gone. She also realized that she has given up on her son, which has been almost too much for her to bear.

Garland asks Abby to stay with him. He tells her that his group and her group will live on without them. He offers to help her start a renewed search for Peter. He tells her that she needs to live -- not just survive. This turns out to be a very tempting offer for Abby.

Meanwhile, Greg learns from Jenny that Ruth (the sick woman) is awake and doing much better. They learn that she had been training to become a doctor when the Sickness happened. She has been traveling the countryside and trying to help out ever since -- at least until she got sick:

It turns out that Ruth has gathered her own troupe of survivors. There's the other nurse, a woman named Peggy. There are a couple men, including a deaf headmaster. And three boys. Including one named Peter Clark... Or is it Peter Grant?

A whole season of looking for Peter and happen to stumble upon the one woman who's been caring for him -- just when Abby takes off! Not only that, but she'd have been dead if Greg had had his way!

However, subplots can wait. The first of the neighboring representatives has shown up for their little summit. S/he is quickly followed by the arrival of Jimmy Garland and Abby Grant. She tells him that she cannot run away with him. He tells her that she can always visit -- and I'm pretty sure that the two plan to introduce conjugal privileges in their new federation agreement!

Sealed with a kiss, Garland runs off to the summit and Abby is greeted by her post-Death family -- bearing gifts of Peter's survival!

And that's how season one of "Survivors" finishes -- with a promise of community, neighborly connections, and a reunion with Abby's long-missing son.

Looking back, it's interesting to watch how things shift midway through the season. The first several episodes focused on the Death itself, as well as the tentative steps that our group took to connect with each other and figure out a plan for survival. It also gave us a glimpse into what other settlements initially looked like -- from Wormley's ham-fisted governance to Garland's dream of a renewed feudal state and finally to Charles Vaughan's free love utopia.

Personally, I think I'd prefer to settle for a little bit of Wormley's organizational skills mixed with Vaughan's free loving ideas. But that's just me!

Then, starting in episodes 7 and 8, the show shifted to the growing pains of a new settlement. New people came. Some people left. How does our group -- made up mostly of urban dwellers -- adjust to a collective farming lifestyle? How do they handle setbacks? How do they handle things like theft and hoarding and murder?

"Survivors" definitely changed over time. And I definitely don't agree with many of the choices that these survivors made over the course of this series. But I love the Grange and I like the promise of communal life that they have slowly built up by the end of this season.

My plan is to write up one more blog post -- not specifically about the show, but exploring how I might try to shape the world should I find myself amongst the survivors of this type of horrible plague. After that, I plan to take a break. My plan is to review Season Two sometime in late July or early August.

I really appreciate the feedback that I have received to this blog series. I don't receive many comments on this blog, but I've received a lot of favorable comments from various "Survivors" fans -- both directly and on Facebook. It is great to know that others enjoy this 40-year-old cult classic television program just as much -- if not more -- than me.

THE BLACK HOOD #4-5: Black Hood Hunts the Connection!

THE BLACK HOOD's first story arc ended last week. This comic, the first title in Archie Comics' new Dark Circle imprint, features Officer Gregory Hettinger. This Pittsburgh cop made a name for himself by shooting the previous Black Hood and then getting shot in the face, effectively ruining his appearance and starting the downward cycle into the world of pain medication dependence and addiction.

In the first two issues of this series, we witnessed him falling into the darkest reaches of his life. He begins stealing prescription drugs from criminals. Not only that, but Hettinger began wearing the Black Hood's torn up masks around the house whenever he got high off of his stolen pain meds.

Eventually, Hettinger came across the mugging and impulsively beat the crap out of the muggers while wearing the mask. The Black Hood was reborn at this moment. Hettinger then kicks off a city-wide assault on the local drug community -- both as a dirty cop who didn't mind swiping the drugs and as the Black Hood who just liked kicking the shit out of criminals.

Of course, his actions have attracted the attention of the local kingpin, an unknown man of power known only as the Connection. The Connection grew tired of Hettinger's shenanigans and managed to very publicly frame the dirty cop by planting tons of stolen drugs in his apartment.

What follows next Hettinger's effort to clear his name and exposed the real connection. Issue #3 ended with Hettinger/Black Hood confronting two of the Connection's top men over the grave of the previous Black Hood.

Hettinger actually does pretty well against Graham and Savitz -- but he would have done much better (issue THE BLACK HOOD #4) if he'd confronted them one-on-one. It helps that Hettinger is usually hopped up on drugs when he goes out as the Black Hood. But he'd been trying to ween himself off them since his arrest. Plus, there's only so much that drugs can do to prop you up.

Hettinger ends up getting exposed during the fight. You have to admit that he's probably the most recognizable cop working for the Pittsburgh Police Department at this point. Hettinger quickly realizs that he has to take out these two guys permanently or else his entire life will be exposed and he ended up being executed by the media or by the Connection -- or both.

Unfortunately, the police arrive and break up the fight. Graham and Savitz are arrested, but Hettinger manages to escape. He manages to pull some strings to get the pair placed in lockdown for six hours. He hopes that this will give him the time needed to identity and expose the Connection. That way, even if he goes down, Pittsburgh's major crime boss will go down with him!

Hettinger can barely stand up by this point. He turns to his only friend for help -- speech therapist Jessie Dupree. She isn't happy to learn about his double-life as the Black Hood, but agrees to help him out. Basically, she drives him around town to track down a few final leads on higher-up stooges for the Connection.

The driver manages to get away, but Hettinger finally stops running and starts piecing together various clues from the past couple issues and figures out the Connection's identity without beating anyone senseless.

Hettinger tracks the Connection down to his base of operations. Just in time, because the Connection had used his... connections to speak to Graham and Savitz and learn the Black Hood's secret identity. This leads to a final confrontation that was actually pretty cool -- both in how Hettinger took care of the Connection, but also how he successfully cleared himself of wrong-doing over the drug-charges, as well as cleared himself of suspicion of being the Black Hood!

The final pages of THE BLACK HOOD #5 wrapped up some loose ends and finally got him addressing his addiction. He has a promising future ahead of him, both serving as a cop in good standing again. But also possible romance with the only other person who knows his biggest secret, Jessie Dupree.

That said, I can't help thinking that the Black Hood will return with new drug-involved adventures in the future -- most likely in October 2015 when the series returns!

I have really enjoyed THE BLACK HOOD. It is much darker and more violent than most of the comic book that I am used to reading. But it's also different. Hettinger's trauma at the beginning of this storyline, his descent into pain med addiction, and his reasons for becoming the Black Hood... It makes a lot of sense to me. Not to mention, his need to continue as the Black Hood in order to clear his name.

I'm really look forward to where this series is heading. Will be stay clean? Will Dupree continue to stand by him once it's clear that the Black Hood has return? I can't wait to find out these answers!

Mutants VS Inhumans (??) in EXTRAORDINARY X-MEN!

Marvel Comics put out all sorts of information today about their post-Secret Wars titles. Lots of changes coming up, but it appears that everything will be set eight months following Secret Wars. One of the rumored post-Secret Wars developments was an exodus of sorts for Marvel Comics' mutants from Planet Earth. The theory is that the Terrigan Mists -- which mutate the various Inhuman characters into their Inhuman bodies -- is toxic to mutants. Since Earth is now awash with Terrigan Mists, the mutants have to go!

One of the titles that Marvel Comics announced is EXTRAORDINARY X-MEN, which is supposed to be the new flagship "X-Men" title. The team consists of Storm, Old Man Logan, Iceman, Colossus, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, and Magik.

We are being promised a conflict between the mutants and the Inhumans, which seems to bear out the toxic Terrigan Mist theory.

United Church of Christ General Synod Approves Resolution Supporting Boycott of the Washington Redskins // Renews Boycott of Cleveland Indians Over "Chief Wahoo" Mascot

The United Church of Christ is currently going through its General Synod, a gathering of UCC leaders and members from all over the denomination. Part of General Synod -- the more interesting aspect to me these days -- is the process of voting on resolutions supporting or opposing this cause or another.

The UCC's General Synod passed a resolution yesterday encouraging a denomination-wide boycott of the Washington Redskins football games and merchandise until the team finally dropped its "Redskins" name and mascot:
The Monday resolution takes the boycott national. It called on the NFL franchise to “change its team name and to refrain from the use of any images, mascots, or behaviors that are harmful or demeaning to Native American cultures or peoples,” said the Rev. Linda Jaramillo, a national officer of the UCC, in a press release.

“The use of the term ‘Redskins’ for the team mascot and nickname of the Washington football team is offensive and causes direct harmful effects to the public health and well-being of the Native American population,” she said.

In a joint statement about the resolution, Oneida Indian Nation Representative Ray Halbritter and Jackie Pata, executive director of the National Congress of American Indians, representing more than 80 Native American tribes, said they were “honored” by the “effort to help relegate this offensive and outdated slur to the dustbin of history.”
The UCC's General Synod also passed a resolution, renewing it's long-standing condemnation of Native American imagery for sports teams, particularly the Cleveland Indians' Chief Wahoo mascot.

There has been mixed reaction to the 1991 resolution against Chief Wahoo from within the denomination. But UCC member Toni Buffalo, a Lakota from Eagle Butte, SD, defended the resolution, stating:
"I am not a Redskin. I am not a mascot. That is not an honor. Do not try to honor me that way."
I originally wrote about the proposed resolution to boycott the Washington Redskins here.

Gay Couple Looks Back 30 Years When Anti-Gay Forces Separated Them From Their Foster Kids

Here is a link to an article about the Massachusetts couple who became the first openly gay foster parents in that state. This took place back in 1985. The couples was caring for two young children when a local paper became aware of their situation. An article was published, despite the couple's request that it be dropped. The culture warriors became incensed. The legislature freaked out. Within a day, both boys were removed from their care. The couple filed a lawsuit against the state over attempts to ban gay people from foster parenting and they were successful. They eventually took in four brothers and adopted all four boys in 1994.

Here is the quote that stands out for me:
Don Babets and David Jean, like others in the gay community, had become urban pioneers, buying a house on Fort Hill in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood. Babets, who worked for the city, had grown up the oldest of five. Jean, who worked for a nonprofit and was music director at his church, grew up as one of six. So it was only natural, after being together for seven years, that they thought about kids of their own. They applied to be foster parents.

I had no agenda when I went in to do this. I just wanted to be a parent,” Jean said. “I wasn’t trying to prove anything. I wasn’t trying to stir up the pot.
David Jean was talking about foster parenting and adoption here, but this relates to marriage also. Most LGBT people aren't trying to make a statement when we get married or when we take steps to adopt or do surrogacy or whatever. We're just trying to solidify our families.

Just like any other person. It's just that our motives are constantly questioned by people who don't need to question them.

I don't believe that our opponents get that when they rally against us. We are politicized because we have to fight back against political and social forces who actively seek to disrupt our day-to-day lives. Most of us would seriously prefer to focus on the challenges of family life.

Polygamous Family Applies for Marriage License in Montana

Perhaps you've watched an episode of TLC's "Sister Wives" program? It features a man named Kody Brown and his multiple wives (one legal and the other spiritual). Brown was arrested back in 2011 and charged with bigamy. The bigamy charge was filed by the state of Utah, not because he tried filing multiple marriage licenses, but because he cohabited with his spiritual wives. He sued and managed to strike down that portion of Utah's bigamy law.

"Sister Wives" is in the news again. This time around, a Montana man named Nathan Collier tried applying for a marriage license for his spiritual wife while still married to his legal wife. He was reportedly inspired by last week's U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage:
Nathan Collier and his wives Victoria and Christine applied at the Yellowstone County Courthouse in Billings on Tuesday in an attempt to legitimize their polygamous marriage. Montana, like all 50 states, outlaws bigamy — holding multiple marriage licenses — but Collier said he plans to sue if the application is denied.
"It's about marriage equality," Collier told The Associated Press Wednesday. "You can't have this without polygamy."

County clerk officials initially denied Collier's application, then said they would consult with the county attorney's office before giving him a final answer, Collier said.

Yellowstone County chief civil litigator Kevin Gillen said he is reviewing Montana's bigamy laws and expected to send a formal response to Collier by next week. "I think he deserves an answer," Gillen said, but added his review is finding that "the law simply doesn't provide for that yet."
Collier was inspired by Chief Justice John Roberts' dissent, which asserted that people in polygamous relationships could make the same legal arguments that gay couples successfully used in support of our families.

One of my GCN friends was pretty livid about this case. She believes that it is too soon for someone like Collier to challenge their state's polygamy ban. She is also afraid that it just serves to justify concerns by anti-gay challengers.

I've always been more of a libertine when it comes to poly families. I don't think that that many people will actually seek legal plural marriages. Most could make a pretty strong religious liberty argument. And it would help bring some light into the otherwise closeted world of plural marriages.

On the other hand, divorce would suck. And it could become a huge drain on the Social Security system, as well as other pension sources.

On the other hand, we have been told that gay marriage will lead to polygamy for years. So give them a chance to make their case and then prove the connection. Or for the connection to be disproved.

Either way, I anticipate a plural marriage lawsuit storyline in future seasons of "Sister Wives."

Crowdfund Recommendation: Rebuild Henrytown Lutheran Church

I recently wrote a story about an Iowa widower who found a horrible letter left in his car by a horrible person. He was basically told that God killed his wife because he has officiated over gay weddings in the past. I shared a link to his daughter's GoFundMe page, which was being used to raise money to help pay for his wife's medical and funeral expenses. They are trying to raise $9,000. They had a few hundred dollars when I first linked to the GoFundMe page. They are now (as of this writing) at $5,265!

It's not uncommon these days to here about hundreds, thousands, and sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars being raised through crownfunding efforts to help people or businesses that are struggling one way or the other because of social media culture war SNAFUs.

I want to start highlighting other crowdfunding efforts that involve everyday people with everyday needs that are being overshadowed by more blog-worthy stories. I plan to do this as a semi-regular series on this blog. I have given or plan to give to each of these fundraising efforts. Please check out these crowdfunding links and prayerfully consider a donation to any of these efforts.

Crowdfund Recommendation #1: Rebuild Henrytown Lutheran Church: Henrytown Lutheran Church is a historic church community based in Canton, MN. It was originally founded by 26 families back in 1870. A church building was built in 1879. It has been an active church community for the past century, with nearly 200 current members.

Unfortunately, the church was burned to the ground on April 16, 2015:
Henrytown Lutheran Church has returned to the ground on which it stood from a fire on April 16th, 2015. Blessed are those who believe and have faith in God that he has not left us. There are all different types of love and to be so blessed to have been touched by the Holy Spirit in this place of worship is truly a blessing. Our church is our rock and built on one foundation of grace, faith and love that can never be taken away. They say that things happen for a reason and we will never know why but God's plan is always greater.
Henrytown Lutheran's membership is trying to rebuild. Their fundraising goal is ambitious: $50,000. As of this writing, they have raised $815 via GoFundMe.

However, additional donations to Rebuild Henrytown Lutheran Church are being received at First Southeast Bank; 111 N. Main Street; Canton, MN 55922 or First Southeast Bank; 3 Main Avenue North; PO Box 429; Harmony, MN 55939.

Coming from Dark Circle in 2016: THE WEB!

I haven't seen this anywhere but Bleeding Cool. Archie Comics apparently announced a fifth title within it's Dark Circle superhero line: THE WEB!:
The re-imagined series follows Jane Raymond, a 14-year-old high-schooler who idolizes a hero known as The Web. Finding herself with mysterious powers much like her idol, Jane’s struggle to balance her new life as a superhero while also dealing with family issues will put this new hero to the ultimate test.
This is an interesting addition. Most of Dark Circle's books have featured existing heroes (such as the Fox) or re-imagined older heroes (such as the Black Hood, the Shield, and Hangman). This will be the first new Dark Circle heroes who's re-imagining an older hero, while there is already a recently re-imagined version within the New Crusaders.

I can't help wondering what it might look like if this Web teamed up with New Crusaders's Web?

THE WEB will be written by Dave White and will feature art by Szymon Kudranski.

Lisbon, IA: Disabled Vet & Service Dog Reportedly Kicked Out of Restaurant

Lisbon, IA, is in the national media following a July 3rd incident involving the owner of Whitey's Bar and Grill, a disabled war vet, and his service dog (though it's still listed as "not verified" -- apparently anyone can post stories on CNN's website, which CNN may or may not investigate):
A disabled, American war vet, Chazz Russell, wishing to dine with his service dog at Whitey's Bar and Grill, Lisbon, Iowa, was discriminated against and then viciously attacked by bar owner Daron "Whitey" Rubner.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), privately owned businesses that serve the public, such as restaurants, hotels, retail stores, taxicabs, theaters, concert halls, and sports facilities, are prohibited from discriminating against individuals with disabilities. The ADA requires these businesses to allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals onto business premises in whatever areas customers are generally allowed. The bar owner questioned the vet about the authenticity of the service dog and the vet responded that he would be willing to go home and bring back the certification, but technically, business owners are not legally able to insist to see the paperwork.

Bar owner, Daron Rubner's response to the vet was to rant about no dogs being allowed in his establishment, and how the vet “must be lying” about being disabled. He then viciously attacked the vet. Police were summoned and charges against the establishment are pending.
A group of supporters currently plan to rally at the bar on July 26th to "let them know its NOT OK to discriminate against OUR vets."

You can read first hand accounts by the vet and a friend here and here.

As far as I can tell, there's been no online response so far from Whitey's Bar and Grill, or from the owner.

It was a really nice day for doggy daycare yesterday. The temperatures has been fairly cool for July. I don't think it got above 75 degrees all day! Which is great if you're covered from head to tail with fur! Nero enjoyed himself.

ARCHIE #1: The Relaunch Begins!

I have to admit it. I was nervous about the relaunch of ARCHIE. I haven't objected much to the character redesigns. I've just worried about the execution. It's always about the execution.

I've always chuckled when people talk about continuity in Archie Comics. I mean, everything and anything is canon with funny books like Archie Comics -- except when it's not. That's how you can have Archie & Friends celebrate Christmas several times each  December within each of the digests. Or how you can make parodies of "Thor" or "Guardians of the Galaxy" featuring these guys.

Plus there was that whole "new look" theme within the digests a few years back that never quite came together. I liked the idea, but the new look had some issues.

So I've been nervous about Archie Comics throwing their all into this company-wide relaunch. It's hard not to think about what will happen if this falls flat.

Fortunately, they chose two "big guns" to launch the relaunch. ARCHIE #1 was released yesterday complete with 21 separate cover designs. Husband Mark (who normally picks up my comic books) had to go through the pile of ARCHIE #1's with the owner of our local comic book shop to make sure that I got the correct cover. Which for me is pretty much any cover. I'm not picky. Mark ended up asking if there was anything by Giselle. There wasn't, so I got a pretty nice Fiona Staples cover.

I have to admit that I was very happy with the final results. There is a little bit of "fourth wall" throughout the book as Archie Andrews introduces himself to the audience and gives us a little bit of understanding about what's going on in Riverdale. It seems that he and Betty Cooper have been couple (a "power couple," if Kevin Keller is to be believed) for years.

Something happened. It's become known as the "lipstick incident." Nobody knows anything about the lipstick incident except for Archie and Betty, and they've agreed to keep quiet about it. Jughead knows too, but he also is keeping it to himself. But it was big enough that Archie and Betty have just broken up and the entire school is reeling!

Especially Kevin Keller, Sheila Wu, and Maria Rodriguez. They can't wrap their collective head around the concept of a Bettchie-less Riverdale High. (Have I mentioned that I hate it when couples combine their names??) These three -- after failing to get Jughead or Betty to share details about the lipstick incident -- conspire to get Archie and Betty both voted in as Homecoming king and queen. They figure that one romantic event will bring this separated couple back together.

They finally talk Jughead into helping them stack the votes in favor of Archie and Betty. Of course, this is Jughead. He's always working on his own agenda. He has his own private scheme to get our main couple back together, but it's more subtle than anything Kev, Sheila, and Maria could ever dream up!

I really liked this story. The art is gorgeous and the character redesigns are all pretty great. It's great to see new looks for all of our old characters -- including Dilton, Raj, Reggie, Mr. Weatherbee, and Trev Smith. There's even hints of the Archies in this book!

I was left wanting to learn more about the "lipstick incident" and the whole break up, but I also know that Veronica Lodge will be appearing soon! Jughead stands out perfectly -- making me even more exciting about his own upcoming comic book relaunch! And I'm all about Kevin and his girls!

I definitely recommend ARCHIE #1. "There Is This Girl" was written by Mark Waid, with art by Fiona Staples, coloring by Andre Szymanowicz & Jen Vaughn, and lettering by Jack Morelli.
