Just in time for National Rescue Day, there is news coming out of Des Moines, IA, involving a man who was charged two days ago with two counts of animal neglect.

21-year-old David Goodburn adopted two dogs from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in late March 2020. And then, according to police, he abandoned his apartment and left his rescue dogs without food or water, where they eventually died a horrific death.

The two dogs were 3-year-old Nori and 1-year-old Brie. According to ARL, they were "incredibly sweet girls who loved belly rubs, toys and especially people." They were bonded to each other. ARL's representatives assert that there were no red flags throughout the adoption process that the dogs would be unsafe in Goodburn's home.

At least, not until May 18th when neighbors began complaining of the strong odor coming from Goodburn's old apartment. According to police, "it's believed Goodburn intentionally left the dogs to die."

Goodburn was arrested on May 18, 2020, and charged with two counts of Animal Neglect -- Death or Serious Injury. Those are serious misdemeanors in Iowa, which means that Goodburn faces a fine of anywhere from $350 to $1875 and up to one year in prison if convicted.
