I've written before that I enjoy watching court programming, but because of work it's pretty rare that I actually get to watch these shows on TV. Fortunately, there are kind people who put these shows on YouTube for people like me to watch. Except that they don't belong to those people so I usually only have a day or two to watch "Judge Judy" or "The People's Court" before their corporate owners yanked them off the 'tube. "Paternity Court" is one of the rare exceptions. They have their own official "Paternity Court" YouTube channel and they post complete episodes of their show on that channel. The result? It's pretty rare to find bootleg copies of that show on YouTube. Just saying...
Anyway, I was watching a fun episode of "The People's Court" on YouTube yesterday and I know that it's a recent one because Harvey Levin is doing his legal bits between cases from his home as opposed to with the people on the street. The episode involved a man buying a defecting accordion through an online sale.
Judge Marilyn Milian wanted to see the accordion, so the plaintiff started taking it out of its case. Then she suddenly asked if there were any accordion players in the seating gallery -- and someone raised her hand!
Check this out:
Judge Marilyn Milian: Does anyone in this room play an accordion?Audience Member Jerri: I do!Judge Milian: Oh my gosh! For real? You are an audience member who is here by coincidence and who plays the accordion! Did you know I was going to ask that question?Jerri: No idea!Judge Milian: Because you shot up so quickly like "Pick me! Pick me!" What's you name?Jerri: Jerri...Judge Millian: Jerri... Will you be so kind to step forward, ma'am?Jerri: Absolutely!Judge Milian: You don't have to play well. You just have to play!
Judge Milian asked "What are the odds?" as Jerri's picking up the accordion. But I'm pretty sure that she knew that someone was in the audience because Jerri later said that she'd asked someone about the instrument earlier. So I actually do believe that the show's producers asked the judge to ask if anyone played and then to have that person come up and actually play. Because that's how TV works.
But it was still fun!
Judge Milian had Jerri come near her to play around with the instrument, which prompted this funny exchange:
The plaintiff ended up winning his case -- which actually surprised me because the judge usually follows a "buyer beware" attitude for these types of online sales. But I guess there was enough evidence for her that the defendant withheld the defective nature of the instrument. So he got his money back and she was given back the accordion.

Jerri: Do you want to hear a polka?Jerri fiddled around a little bit and could get the keys on the left side of the instrument to play, but she did manage to play the keys on the right side of the accordion -- and she was pretty good! She played around with the instrument enough to show off her skills and to demonstrate the inherent defects within the instrument before taking a bow before the judge and the applauding audience.
Judge Milian: Yes, I want to hear a polka!! Who doesn't?
