Bill Would Require Iowans to identify Their Sexual Orientation on Marriage License Applications

A flurry of anti-LGBTQ bills dropped in Iowa yesterday. Senate File 2130 is an interesting bit of grand-standing that was submitted by Senator Dennis Guth of Klemme, IA. Do I need to mention that he's a Republican?

SF 2130 would require that marriage license applicants must choose from an assortment of sexual orientation options when filling out their paperwork. Their options would include bisexual, heterosexual, homosexual, questioning or unsure, and "an identity not listed: please specify." If one refused to disclose their sexual orientation on their marriage licenses application, or if they misrepresented their sexual orientation, then it would be considered to be a fraudulent concealment of sexual orientation and could be used against the guilty spouse when it comes to determining child custody arrangements.

Basically, failing to correctly identify your sexual orientation at the beginning of your marriage would be used against you end of your marriage when you and your spouse are trying to determine if joint custody is in the best interest of your children. Heck, the bill would even allow divorcing spouses to forego any court-ordered mediation if there's evidence of fraudulent concealment of sexual orientation.

Apparently, one of Guth's constituents was getting divorced and she wasn't allowed to use her husband's homosexual sexual orientation against him in court.

I cannot imagine the outrage if this actually passed that would come from Guth's base. Most religious conservatives don't want people to self-identify by sexual orientation. They supposedly don't believe in sexual orientation. And if they do believe in sexual orientation, they still want gay people to marry heterosexually. Now he wants all marrying Iowans to declare their sexual orientation on a government document? Good luck with that.

As of right this minute, SF 2130 lacks any co-sponsors.
