Remember last February when the United Methodist Church's 2019 General Conference voted in favor of the Traditional Plan, which tightened down on the denomination's opposition to same-sex wedding, queer clergy, and pro-gay opposition? And then in April 2019 when the United Methodist Church Judicial Council agreed that anti-gay animus is really swell?

Earlier today, a 16-member group of United Methodist bishops and leaders finally agreed that there's no way that they can humanely make the Traditional Plan work and instead drafted a document called "Protocol of Reconciliation & Grace Through Separation," which will essentially split the United Methodist Church in two pieces.

The protocol will allow the UMC to set aside $25 in Methodist money for fund a new anti-gay Methodist denomination. This new Methodist denomination would start up by 05/15/21 and interested churches could join and even bring along their existing UMC church property and supplies if they want.

Which is a really fancy way of saying that they will lock all those complaints in a file cabinet somewhere in the UMC Courthouse until some unknown future moment.

The protocol also calls or a special session to organize to begin removing current prohibitions against LGBTQ people and families and to repeal the Traditional Plan

Of course, all of this has to be voted on by the 2020 General Conference in may 2020. Am I'm cynical enough to believe that the Wesley group will take their $25 million and run -- and then enough of the rest will reject any of the LGBTQ-inclusive stuff. Time will tell...
