One of my favorite childhood sitcoms was "WKRP in Cincinnati." It told the story of a young man named Randy Travis who took over as program manager for a failing radio station with dreams of turning it into the number one station in Cincinnati.
It occurred to me that one of the show's most infamous episodes -- "Turkeys Away" -- aired just over 40 years ago!
In this episode, Mr. Carlson finds himself increasingly pushed to the side by Travis and all of his changes. As a result, he pulls rank and decide to launch a special turkey giveaway promoting for Thanksgiving Day. However, Carlson refuses to reveal why this particularly giveaway is so special or unique.
Instead, Travis and the others find themselves reacting in horror as Les Nessman reports the giveaway during a live broadcast. It seems that Mr. Carlson decided to toss several live turkeys from a helicopter on an unsuspecting grocery store parking lot. The turkeys plummeted to the ground like bags of wet cement, causing hundreds of dollars in damages.
The people rioted. The authorities raged. And all Mr. Carlson could do was shake his head and offer up a weak explanation: "As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly..."
It is a great episode and well worth the watch. You can view the episode here.
