I first began reading and collecting comic books in the mid-80s (not counting the Archie Comics comic book digests that I used to pick up from the grocery store). I really enjoyed reading TRANSFORMERS and eventually expanded my purchases to include UNCANNY X-MEN.
This was back when the X-Men were publicly deceased and invisible to electronic recordings and consisted of Storm, Wolverine, Havok, Colossus, Dazzler, Psylocke, Longshot, Rogue, and Madeline Pryor. This was a great team (in my opinion). My favorite member of that team was Psylocke (AKA Betsy Braddock). She was a British telepath that wore a purple cloak and armor and she attacked other people with this psychic butterfly attack.
Eventually, this team of X-Men got tossed into the mystical Siege Perilous and scattered to the winds, complete with temporary amnesia and backstories. Except for Psylocke.
She ended up in Hong Kong and was now a psychic ninja with a telepathic blade coming out of her fist. Everyone else eventually reverted back to their original powers and appearances, but not Betsy. It's been nearly thirty years and she's still a psychic ninja in an Asian body.
Except it now looks like Marvel Comics might be transforming her back into a Caucasian hero. It's happening in a comic book that I'm not reading called HUNT FOR WOLVERINE: MYSTERY IN MADRIPOOR. From the previews, it looks like the villainous Sapphire Styx has been digging around in her head and making changes -- changes that will revert this psychic ninja back into her original appearance.
I'm assuming that there has been some internal wrangling about the appropriateness of maintaining Betsy's faux-Asian identity instead of creating more legitimate Asian members, or using ones that already exist more like Jubilee or Sunfire. (Jon's Note: Incidentally, what is the aversion with using Sunfire more often in the X-books?? He's a powerful character with great potential. They really need to use him more often.)
It's possible that I'm off-base and Psylocke will remain as she's been since the very early 90s. But I honestly don't think that's where things are heading right now!
