It's been a long time since Marvel Comics published anything featuring the Pet Avengers -- by far one of my favorite teams ever. The team consisted of Lockjaw, Frog-Thor, Lockheed, Zabu, Redwing, Hairball, and Ms. Lion. They had a few adventures and then the team just fizzled out of existence, even though individual members -- Lockjaw, Redwing, Zabu, and Frog-Thor in particular -- continue to appear in comics. Some more regularly than others.
Case in point: a few months ago, I learned that Marvel Comics was going to publish a new LOCKJAW mini-series. I tucked that away in the back of my mind and then moved on. When I noticed the comics on this week's solicitations list, I saw that LOCKJAW #1 was being published. So I told Husband Mark to grab me a copy so that I could check it out.
Which was such a great idea!
LOCKJAW promises to explore the origins of the Inhumans' teleporting bulldog. Given that he can teleport pretty much anywhere, he just disappears whenever the mood strikes him Lockjaw left the Inhumans' moon-based city of New Arctilan (Jon's Note: When did the Inhumans return to the Moon? I am so out of it!!) and popped down to Brooklyn to visit a 30-year-old bulldog named Bixby. I'm assuming that he's a relative
Of course, Lockjaw wasn't the only one looking for Bixby. An armada of hostile hamster attacked Lockjaw and Demolition-Man -- who just happens to live in the same building as Bixby and his person. They attacked Lockjaw and D-Man but only because they were in the way. They were really after Bixby for some reason. Fortunately, Bixby was protected and the hamster went off to capture some "secondary targets" (presumably other unusual bulldogs).
The Fantastic Four used to have a teleporting bulldog pup of its own. I don't remember if they ever gave it an origin, but I'm wondering if we'll see him again before this series is finished?
Lockjaw teleported away after the attack, presumably chasing after the hostile hamsters. And he landed smack-dab in the middle of the Savage Land and face-to-face with his own partner Zabu! This is where we find out how "canon" the whole Pet Avengers team-up was... Next issue, anyways...
Speaking of Demolition-Man... (Jon's Note: Weren't we?) It turns out that Dennis Dunphy AKA Demolition-Man AKA D-Man is going through a rough patch. Which is pretty much how his life has always been. D-Man started out as a super-powered wrestler within the Unlimited Class Wrestling Foundation before teaming up with Captain America. He started out okay (outside of this addiction that he developed to these drugs that some villain kept giving him), but then he had a pretty serious heart attack. And then he suffered from a traumatic brain injury. And then he became a homeless super-hero. And then he quit taking his psych meds. And then he got killed. And then he got resurrected and killed again.
But then he got better (somehow) and got his life together again. He became a support character for Falcon back when he was serving as Captain America. He got a place to live. He got a boyfriend. And he was doing generally okay.
But then he somehow lost his powers and his boyfriend and his job and now he just lies around the house pigging out and smashing television sets! He's just scraping by. He stumbles across Lockjaw just in time for the hamster attack and now finds himself fighting side-by-side with a new four-legged partner. And he's still second-fiddle! But I'm really interested to see how he manages to pull himself back together again!
"Who's a Good Boy?" features writing by Daniel Kibblesith, penciling by Carlos Villa, inking by Roberto Poggi, coloring by Chris O'Halloran, and lettering by VC's Clayton Cowles.
