"Coronation Street" Finally Says the Word "Bisexual" in Connection to #Kana

I've written before about "Coronation Street" and its crazy love triangle between Zeedan, his wife Rana, and her lover Kate. I used to hate Kate and Rana's romance. They skirted around in shadows, stealing secret kisses from each other while Zeedan believed that everything was fine with his new marriage.

Then Rana finally came out about her affair to Zeedan and everything blew up in her face. The only thing that has saved their marriage is a money deal from her parents. He gets a lot of money to start up his own restaurant as long as he keeps Rana's lesbian tryst a secret and continues living with her as husband and wife for at least one year. Nobody is happy with the arrangement, but at least the secret is safe.

Nobody knows about Rana's affair except for her parents and her brother. Oh, and Leanne knows. And Robert and Michelle. And then Zeedan's grandmother Yasmeen recently found out. In other words, it's not really a big secret.

One of the things that bugs me about this story line is the need to label Rana as a lesbian. She has told multiple people that she loves Zeedan. She's attracted to Zeedan. And she's attracted to Kate. She's generally always been attracted to men. She's never been attracted to any women except for Kate. But everyone wants to call her a lesbian.

If only there were another label for situations like this. Something like... bisexuality!

The word finally got introduced to the program Monday evening when Yasmeen finally broke down and confided to her friend Cathy about her current family scandal. "Rana's a lesbian," she blurted out.

Cathy nearly spit out her wine. "Come again??"

"Bisexual. I don't know... She says she's in love with Kate."

I was so happy when Yasmeen finally muttered the "b-word."

There is this tendency to ignore the concept of bisexuality -- even when an example of it is kicking your right in the shin. And, yes, I understand that labeling is personal and that it's up to individuals to label themselves. But I think that it's long about time for someone to sit down with Rana and her friends to inform her that she seems like a bisexual. And that there's nothing wrong with that.
