INHUMAN #1: Change Comes to the Inhumans

I just finished reading INHUMAN #1. It's an interesting new chapter for Marvel Comics' Inhuman characters.

Before 2013, the Inhumans were a mutant race of former humans who lived in servitude under Black Bolt, Medusa, and the Royal Family. After the Infinity cross-over, we learned that there appear to be several secret break-away Inhuman communities hidden across the planet (though, to be fair, we already knew of at least one of those offshoot Inhuman communities populated by Red Raven and several bird-people), plus several humans with unrealized Inhuman DNA who are just waiting for exposure to the Terrigan Mists to jump start those powers.

Most earlier Inhumans were joined together culturally. They worshiped the same gods. They followed the same leaders. They grew up with the same goals and avoided the same taboos.

But these new Inhumans are different. They hold no loyalty to the Royal Family -- or to any of these offshoot Inhuman communities. They are culturally diverse. They are religiously diverse. They may be genetic Inhumans, but they are not cultural Inhumans. Some may indeed embrace their new heritage, but others won't. Or they may band together to form their own kingdom. Who knows?

That's the beauty behind INHUMAN.

There are three main players in this book. First, there is Medusa. She is the Inhuman Queen who just lost her king and her kingdom. She is charged with picking up the pieces (literally) after Attilan falls from the sky. Can she reunite and reorganize her scattered people? And where does she start with this daunting task?

Then there is Lash. He is from one of these other Inhuman communities. It's a city called Orollan. For many generations, they had enough Terrigan energy to transform a chosen few. We don't know much about him yet, but one can assume that Lash (and possibly the others from Orollan) believe in the power of eugenics. He seeks out those in the midst of terrigenesis. If he approves of their abilities and their control, then they live. If not...

Lastly, there is Dante. He's a young musician from Des Plaines, Illinois. He and his mother were sleeper Inhumans. He survived the process. She did not. Want to guess his powers?:

INFERNO #1 ends with a choice. Will Dante side with the Fallen Kingdom of Attilan or will he turn to the Hidden City of Orollan? Or maybe he choose something completely different...

"Genesis" is written by Charles Soule, drawn by Joe Madureira, and colored by Marte Gracia.
