I received a letter today from Justice Not Politics Action (which I financially contributed to earlier this year), which talked about how much money they raised and how they utilized their funds to successfully back Iowa Supreme Court Justice David Wiggins and other judges and justices who might have been targeted by conservative forces and out-of-state political forces.

According to JNPA's co-chairs, Hon. Joy Corning and Hon. Sally Pederson, Justice Not Politics and Justice Not Politics Action raised a total of $437,287 throughout the 2012 election cycle (compared to Iowans for Freedoms' slightly less that $500,000). JNPA made 190,000 direct mailing to Iowa households. They called 210,000 Iowa household to educate Iowans about why they should vote for judicial retention. They connected with over 400,000 Iowans through social media. And they reached out to over 680,000 Iowans through online advertising.

According to JNPA, 242,631 more Iowans voted in the 2012 retention election compared to the 2010 retention election (which lost three of Iowa's Supreme Court justices in response to the 2009 Varnum v. Brien case, which struck down Iowa's DOMA law and allowed the state's gay and lesbian couples the opportunity to legally wed). 218,654 of those extra voters voted in favor of Justice Wiggins while 23,977 of those extra voters voted against him. In other words, JNPA's education efforts worked!
