Remember how excited I was way back in January about ABC ordering a pilot for a sequel series of the classic 80s family drama, thirtysomething? The new show was going to be called thirtysomething(else) and it was going to feature the adult children of the actors from the original series, plus several of the original actors.
Deadline made a sad announcement earlier today: ABC decided against moving forward with thirtysomething(else). Because of COVID-19, ABC had committed itself to two new dramas -- and they decided that Rebel and Harlem's Kitchen were more likely to succeed as ongoing series.
Money is also an issue. thirtysomething(else) is going to cost a lot -- mainly because of the returning cast members. That said I did learn that it's not just Ken Olin, Mel Harris, Timothy Busfield, and Patty Wettig who will be returning. I learned that Melanie Mayron and Polly Draper would also be returning -- in recurring roles.
Not everything is bleak, though. thirtysomething(else) is being shopped around in search of a new home. So there is still hope that this fan favorite sequel series will advance. Fingers crossed!
