Late last week, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa shared information about two badly emaciated dogs that had been taken to the shelter for treatment. The dogs were literally skin and bones and in surprisingly good spirits given their poor health.
ARL subsequently reported that the dogs are named Duke and Mariah. They reported that the dogs had been rescued from a Des Moines home. The dogs were a week away from being starved to death. One of the dogs, Duke, weighted 37.5 pounds -- half of what his normal body weight should have been! Duke and Mariah were immediately treated for dehydration and were carefully fed by the shelter's treatment team.
Earlier today, we learned that 54-year-old Lorna Danley was arrested early today and charged with two counts of animal neglect in connection to this horrible case. She was also cited for other ordinance violations related to the dogs, according to the media.
Danley was booked into the Polk County jail early this morning and released three hours later.
