What Is Space Force??

You're likely aware that United States Space Force (USSF) was officially signed into law late last year. You may be aware that the USSF's duties will be to protect the interests of the United States in space, to deter aggression in, from, and to space, and to conduct space operations. And you'd have to be living under a rock to have missed the unveiling of the USSF's combat utility uniform, which appears to be a camouflage design.

But did you know that Charlton Comics anticipated the creation of Space Force way back in 1956? Space Force first appeared in MYSTERIES OF UNEXPLORED WORLDS #1. It seemed that an unknown energy weapon from outer space was causing worldwide earthquakes and tidal waves. The President and Congress mobilized a small squad of Space Force operatives to blast into space and determine the source of Earth's attack.

Those Space Force members were Major Dan Barton, Lt. Joe Turk, and Lt. Larry Cotton. They've ditched the camouflage uniforms in favor of dark blue jacket with golden eagle designs and brown helmets that remind me of early football helmets. Space Force flies rocket ships throughout our solar system -- though they must not explore too much because they aren't terribly familiar with what's happening on Venus until later into this particular story!

Space Force quickly determines that the destructive energy waves aren't coming from Earth's Moon, but instead they are coming from Venus. As you may or may not know, Venus is covered by extremely dense fog. This fog apparently makes it closet to impossible for Earth forces to scan or communicate with the planet.

Though Space Force's sudden appearance within Venus' fog-cover is initially viewed as signs of attack, the Venusians are quickly convinced by Major Barton that Earth is seeking a peaceful resolution. It turns out that the Venusians hadn't meant to cause any damage to Earth. Instead, they were attempting to use their scientific devices to change the angle of inclination of Venus so that the Sun would fry away their constant fog-cover. Apparently, they hadn't heard of skin cancer in the 49th century!

In other words, this comic book has offered us a glimpse into a distant future where the USSF will become a force for averting war and for making positive connections between humanity and our extraterrestrial neighbors.
