It's all over social media that fourteen United Church of Christ congregations in Missouri raised $60,000 and the Deaconess Foundation raised $40,000 and then they used that money to purchase $12.9 million dollars in medical debt. This medical debt is owed by more that 11,000 families in St. Louis and St. Louis County, MO. These UCC churches and the Deaconess Foundation then forgave all of that debt.
The average amount owed by these families is $1,166. It's worth noting that they were able to pay pennies on the dollar in order to purchase all of this debt.
