UI Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority in Hot Water Following "KKK" Instagram Message

It's that time of year when the various fraternities and sororities go through the motions of recruiting more members. I typically don't see much evidence of this with the frats, but I live near several sorority houses and witness all sorts of pageantry relating to this pledging process.

The University of Iowa's Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority found itself in hot water after one of its members posted a message on Instagram on October 5th inviting students to "join the kkk."

She quickly deleted the post and posted a new comment with the message, "I mean the kkg."

Unfortunately for her and the sorority, her post was noticed, screenshotted, and circulated all over Instagram.

It's pretty clear to me that she made a very unfortunate typo (most likely), but everyone is quickly lining up to condemn the message.

For example, the Beta Zeta Chapter of the sorority posted the following response:
The Beta Zeta Chapter, alongside the Fraternity Council of Kappa Kappa Gamma, is aware of an incident by an individual using insensitive language on social media and strongly condemns this type of behavior. Kappa Kappa Gamma values diversity and inclusion among our membership and we encourage our members to demonstrate an understanding of these values, both on the college campus and in the world community. We are committed to working alongside the university to ensure our members understand and uphold these values moving forward.
Additionally, the University of Iowa Panhellenic Council also quickly condemned the errant social media post:
On Saturday, October 5, a member of the University of Iowa Panhellenic community made a comment that included racist ideology on an Instagram post. The Panhellenic Council will not stand for nor tolerate these unacceptable comments. We are taking immediate action to ensure this situation is addressed. The Panhellenic Council strives to be inclusive and accepting of all members and identities, and we recognize comments of this nature do not align with our values. We hold our Panhellenic members to the highest standards, and the comments made do not reflect our values in any way. As a Council, we will be assessing how to better educate our women on the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion within our Panhellenic community. This action has forced us to re-examine how we address these issues and how to prevent these intolerable situations from happening in the future.
The Univerity of Iowa Kappa Kappa Gamma members is wisely keeping quiet at this time.
