South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg announced his 2020 presidential campaign over the weekend. He began campaigning here in Iowa earlier this week, including a large rally in Des Moines yesterday. Buttigieg's Des Moines rally was disrupted yesterday by Randall Terry and other members of the anti-abortion group, Operation Rescue. Terry had announced earlier this week that he plans to regularly protest Buttigieg's campaign events.
The rally was pretty typical as Democratic political rallies go. Buttigieg discussed his marriage to husband Chasten Buttigieg when one of the protesters began shouting "Remember Sodom and Gomorrah!" He continued to loudly protest as security escorted him away. Buttigieg responded, "The good news is, the condition of my soul is in the hands of God, but the Iowa caucuses are up to you."
All totaled, three protesters disrupted his events yesterday. None of the hecklers were attacked by Buttigieg, nor did he encourage his supported to attack them.
The protests continued today, most notably in Marshalltown, IA, where anti-gay protesters from Operation Rescue put on costumes where "Mayor Pete" whipped "Jesus Christ" -- all the while cheered on by the Devil.
This is already reminding me of the 2012 presidential campaign -- back when Iowa was inundated by silly political stunts and robot costumes and coffee bean polls and crazy sound bites. Honestly, it was stuff like that that made the election cycle fun.
