DC Comics' apocalyptic comic book series, SCOOBY APOCALYPSE, wrapped up this week with issue #36. This book was a series of dark adventures featuring the Scooby Gang and their ongoing battle for survival in a world where most of humanity had been transformed into evil, cannibalistic monsters.
Over the course of 36 issues, we learned that Velma inadvertently that Velma heralded the start of the apocalypse by creating and releasing the nanites that transformed humanity. Scrappy learned how to walk vertically. The Scooby Gang eventually created a new home for what's left of humanity in an abandoned mall. Velma got pregnant with Shaggy's baby. Freddy was killed by monsters -- and brought back from the dead by nanites.
And then we met the cartoonish Nanite King. The Nanite King is a collective entity consisting of Velma's nanites after they'd gained sentience. The were created to transform humanity and the world into a perfect world. And now they've decided the only way that they can achieve global perfection is by destroying humanity.
Of course, not all of the nanites are part of the Nanite King. The nanites that resurrected Freddy are a much smaller collective of dissident nanite who disagree with the need to wipe out humanity. Undead Fred has allied himself with the understandably suspicious Scooby Gang, what's left of the mall community, and Velma's least-bad brother Quentin.
Quentin brought everyone who's still alive (or undead) back to his high tech headquarters and offered Velma another opportunity to reverse the nanite plague -- which she does. Off-panel. While grieving the death of her brother Rufus, mending fences with Shaggy, and periodically sparring with the Nanite King. In three days.
That's right. Velma came up with a cure and used Undead Fred's nanites to infect the rest of the nanites and instantly transform what's left of humanity back to normal within seconds.
Velma should have remained at her original base of operations back at the beginning of this series. She could have reversed the nanite plagues months ago and saved millions of lives -- not to mention most of the wildlife that was undoubtedly killed off by all of the monsters.
Coulda, woulda, shoulda, right?
I'm gonna miss SCOOBY APOCALYPSE. It was an enjoyable series -- as apocalyptic tales go. Plus it filled a need that Archie Comics neglected when they stopped publishing AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE.
