I just finished watching last night's "Coronation Street" episodes. Among other things, it looks like Peter Barlow has suddenly decided to spend his apparent fortune on a snooker hall.
Pete recently sold his pub and bought into a garment factory. He was pennyless a few months ago. Now the value of half a pub can purchase half a garment factory and an entire snooker hall. But I digress...
The decision to purchase the snooker hall came completely out of the blue last night. Peter was increasingly frustrated at the garment factory. His ex was completely undermining him on the job. And frankly, he seems more like a snooker man than a knicker man. So this might be a good move for Peter.
While I welcome Peter's new business opportunity, I'm actually writing about one of my favorite underdog Corrie characters: Alex Warner! (Jon's Note: Did I mention that Liam Bairstow, the actor who plays Alex, follows me on Twitter?) Alex made headlines back in 2015 when he joined the case of "Coronation Street." He was the first actor with Down Syndrome to become a regular on the British soap opera.
Alex lives with his aunt Cathy and her partner Brian. He works at Roy's Rolls. He's seen regularly on the program, taking orders and making small talk with everyone. But he hasn't had any major storylines since I began watching "Corrie" last October.
Which is frustrating to me. Everyone on "Corrie" has a social life. Everyone but Alex. Nobody hangs with him away from work. Nobody dates him. Nobody does anything with him.
I'm wondering if Peter's new snooker hall might be an opportunity to spotlight Alex on the program? You may or may not know that Liam Bairstow is a competitive snooker player. He's been competing in tournaments organized by the World Disabled Snooker Association this summer. Why not show off his talent on-screen? I think there's some real promise to this idea!
