The House Agriculture Committee approved a provision within the House farm bill that would make it illegal to slaughter and eat a cat or a dog within the USA. If passed, such an activity would result in jail time and up to $2,500 in fines.
Sadly, there are agriculture committee members who don't support this legislation to ban the sale of dog or cat meat for human consumption. Including US Representative Steve King (R) of Northewest Iowa, who's been quoted as saying that this is "not a problem in the United States of America."
US Representatives David Young (R) of Van Meter and Dave Loebsack (D) of Iowa City are both co-sponsors of this legislation and support the ban.
Incidentally, it's currently illegal to sell dog or cat meat in Iowa.
