There are marches planned across the country to protest the Trump administration's zero tolerance policy of criminally charging all who approach our southern border illegally, including asylum seekers, separating them from their children, and then placing those children in separate detainment centers with little thought into reuniting these families. President Trump ended up signing an executive order to keep families together. However, the order also removes time limits for detention and allows for indefinite detention of children and families.
Iowa City has its own "Families Belong Together" march and rally planned for today, beginning at 10:00 AM. People are to meet on the west side of the Old Capitol on the Pentacrest. Marchers will go from the Pentacrest to College Green Park.
It should be interesting. Jazz Fest is happening this weekend -- and right in the path of the Families Belong Together March. This will not be an inconspicuous march. Protesters will be carrying signs and they are seeking drummers to make themselves heard.
Here are some of the action chants that are circulating:
The rally will begin at 11:00 AM. Bilingual speakers are expected to speak out on behalf of those who've been detained and for the undocumented children who've been scattered throughout this country in detention center.
