Seb Contemplates Dating as an HIV-Positive Teen on "Coronation Street"

It's National HIV Testing Day today. I'm not going to get tested today, but I really encourage anyone and everyone who thinks that they should get tested to go ahead and get tested.

Which made me think of last night's episode of "Coronation Street." Back when I first started watching the program last year, one of the younger characters -- a 16-year-old teen named Seb -- fell off of a ladder and ended up in the hospital with a serious head injury.

While in the hospital, he learned that a former girlfriend had become diagnosed with HIV. He was eventually encouraged to get tested for HIV -- and learned that he is HIV-positive.

Seb has gradually become accepting of his diagnosis. He takes his meds. He keeps fit and he eats right. He had a girlfriend when he was first diagnosed and she was good with helping him adjust to his HIV status. But they recently broke up and his 16-year-old eyes are beginning to roam again.

Enter: Emma Brooke! She's a newer character to the program. I don't think that she was meant to stay around for long. But she's cute and she's perky and she's hilarious. Frankly, "Coronation Street" needs more cute, perky, and hilarious characters rights now. And other fans apparently like her, because her contract just got extended!

Emma recently began flirting with Seb -- and the feeling is mutual. But he's hesitant to ask the young salon intern out on a date. His mother -- recovering addict Abi Franklin -- confronts him about this and he finally admits that he doesn't know how to tell her that he's HIV-positive. And he figures that she'll freak out when she eventually finds out.

Now I love Abi -- much for many of the same reasons that I currently love Emma. She's pretty and funny and she's chaotic in a good way. But she is still struggling to repair her life after months of drug abuse. So I was pleasantly surprised last night to see her offer some great motherly advise the Seb when he admitted that he didn't know if he should ask Emma out on a date:
Seb: I'm gonna have to tell her at some point. And when I do, she's gonna run a mile.

Abi: if she likes you, she won't. Get to know her. And make sure you like her as well. And if she can't deal with it, then you'll know she's not worth worrying about anyway.
Seb ended up asking Emma out and she agreed. I still don't think she knows about his HIV status, but he got some pretty good advice for readjusting his attitude.
