Only four Iowa City residents have started the application process for raising up to four hens since our City Council approved new "urban chicken" ordinances last December,
according to the Iowa City Press-Citizen. I suspect a lot of that has to do with it getting approved in the middle of winter. I also suspect that some folks who might be interested are waiting to see how things work out with initial applicants.
The Press-Citizen also includes an interview with a prospective urban chicken farmer, which describes the steps he has been taking to realize this goal. He also explains that it's not the application process itself that's difficult. It's tracking down all of his neighbors to get their permission that's been the biggest barrier for starting his urban chicken farm!
