This exclusively gay moment will focus on LaFou, ultra-macho villain Gaston's manservant, portrayed in the movie by Josh Gad.
In an interview with Attitude magazine, director Bill Condon said: “LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston. “He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings. “And Josh [Gad, who plays LeFou] makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. “And that’s what has its pay-off at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”Honestly, I wouldn't expect too much out of this big reveal.
But the Christian Right is freaking out about this right now. There is at least one petition out there urging culture warriors to pledge a boycott of Disney products and programming over LaFoue's exclusively gay moment, not to mention the background same-sex smoochies in this week's episode of "Star vs. the Forces of Evil."
Other groups have tried to boycott Disney products and programming over LGBT issues in the past. It will be interesting to see if this particular outrage has any actual effect. That said, I find it interesting that parents don't mind a story involving the magical romance between a girl and a monster, but they are freaking out over a slightly villainous character's same-sex crush.
