"Luke Cage" features Mike Colter as the title character. Luke is a former cop who spent time in prison for a crime he didn't do. Seagate Prison is a privately owned prison, complete with corrupt prison guards, an underground fight club, and a secret laboratory that ends up giving Luke superhuman strength and unbreakable skin. He made his debut in the first season of "Jessica Jones," but has since left Hell's Kitchen for Harlem.
Luke is trying to hide in the edges of society, but finds himself thrust into the center of a gang-war between Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes, "Black Mariah" Dillard, and Willis "Diamondback" Stryker. He finds himself at odds with Detective Misty Knight, who's troubled by Cage's ongoing presence whenever there's trouble. And then we're treated to the return of Claire Temple, the nurse who made her debut in season #1 of "Daredevil."
I really enjoyed this show. The characters were all spot on. Most episodes featured musical performances, which just served to enhance this series.
Here are some general thoughts:
1. Misty Knight: I spent the movie waiting for Misty Knight to get her bionic arm. There was a situation, which I assumed would l assumed would lead to this. But that sadly didn't happen.
2. Luke Cage as Power Man: I've always wondered why Luke Cage lost his Power Man code-name. I tried looking it up, but couldn't find a reason. He was called Power Man a few times in this Netflix series. I just wish that he could reclaim that name in the comic books. But that seems unlikely since Marvel Comics created a new Power Man in recent years.
3. Not-So-Happy Ending: "Luke Cage" ended similarly to "Jessica Jones," but then went in a completely different direction. Plus, two of his prime enemies are still in action, with hints that a third will return someday to challenge him again. At the very least, seeds have been planted for Luke to finally meet up with Daredevil -- presumably during the upcoming "Defenders" Netflix series or possibly in "Iron Fist."
"Luke Cage" is definitely worth the watch, so check it out as soon as you get the chance!
