There was backlash. Social conservatives lead the fight against Iowa's Supreme Court justices. Several of them were voted out of office during the following election, but their efforts to go after additional justices were eventually stymied.
The only reason that Iowa's legislature didn't move forward with efforts to amend our constitution to reverse this decision and make it so that only opposite-sex couples could marry is because the Democrats held a slim majority in our state's Senate.
Slowly, -- after increasing numbers of months and years where gay and lesbian couples were marrying and none of the horrible things that were predicted ever materialized -- the fire within most of the GOP to get rid of my marriage and others like it pretty much burned out.
Don't get me wrong. I'm sure that they will go after our marriages if given the chance. But it's getting harder and harder to justify this type of delayed response.
