Five Reasons to Enjoy JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS #6!

I wrote last month about JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS #5 and a Misfit-inspired action that nearly killed Jem -- and seriously injured Aja! Aja ended up recovering and the Holograms arrived to compete in the "Misfits VS!" battle of the bands -- only to realized that their roadie was the person who'd sabotaged their set and nearly slaughtered everyone! This led to a public confrontation between the two bands -- and a food fight!

JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS #6 was published this week and we were immediately treated to the aftermath of that battle -- and things didn't turn out well for our heroes!

Here are five reasons to enjoy JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS #6:

1. Jem and the Holograms Learn There Are Consequences for Our Actions: I mentioned before that the Holograms got into a hue public food fight with the Misfit at the end of Issue #5. Page One of Issues #6 reveals their punishment: They've been kicked out the contest! No Ifs. No Ands. No Buts. And certainly, no appeals! It might have felt good in the moment to smash candied apples into Roxy's face, but that god feeling can only translate into bad PR!

2. The Misfits Are Generally Exempt from Consequences: If we learned anything from three seasons of "Jem and the Holograms," it's that the Misfits can shoot a baby on camera in broad daylight and always get away with it! This is why it's good to avoid public grudge matches with them!

3. Synergy Doesn't Limit Her Holographic Glimmer Only to Jem: In the cartoon, Synergy -- the holographic super-computer -- generally limited her holograms to Jerrica Benton. In the comic book, Synergy is much more active. Not only does she magically transform Jerrica into Jem, but she gives holographic boosts to the rest of the Holograms's clothes and hair. It's a nice touch -- and an effort to limit Jem's potential to become a complete diva!

4. The Misfits and Their Guitar-Themed Motorcycles: One of the more striking images from the first "Jem and the Holograms" storyline was the scene that introduce Jerrica (and the viewers) to the Misfits. They drove into Eric Raymond's business office driving these guitar-themed motorcycles. They were completely over-the-top -- which is why I loved them. Sadly, they rarely appeared after that.

But they're back in JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS #6! Outrageous!!

5. Jem & the Holograms Have the Best Light Shows!: The Holograms were unable to overturn their dismissal from the "Misfits VS!" contest, so they created their own impromptu concert. It was great karma -- completely disrupting the Misfits' own performance. Part of the Holograms' attraction is Synergy's active light-show. I always wondered why they didn't take more advantage of her holographic abilities during the cartoon. This Synergy is ever-present. She creates all sorts of holographic displays -- which completely bolster the Holograms' performances! Spot on!!

JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS continues to be a great comic book series. It pulls everything great from the 1980's cartoon and tweaks everything else into perfection. You are really doing yourself a disservice if you're not reading it!

"Showtime Part Six" is written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Sophie Campbell, story by Thompson & Campbell, colors by M. Victoria Robado, and lettering by Tom B. Long.
