"Z Nation" Shouts Out to Riverside, IA, and Trek Fest in Season 2 Episode!

As you might know (or not), I like to binge-watch programs on Netflix. My latest binge is "Z Nation," a show that currently airs on Syfy. In fact, I just found out that a season 3 "Z Nation" just premiered on Friday. So I'll need to keep my eyes out for that.

I'm like a pushmi-pullyu when it comes to zombie programming. I'm definitely drawn to them, but they inevitably repel me due to the fatalistic nature of these programs. I'll track spoilers online for episodes of "Walking Dead" and "Fear the Walking Dead," but I rarely watch them anymore. They're just too depressing!

With that in mind, I avoided "Z Nation" when I first learned of the program on Syfy. Just another apocalyptic program. But -- for whatever reason -- I decided to give the show a chance when I saw it show up as a suggestion on Netflix.

I did indeed find a program about yet another zombie apocalypse. And it's one of the worst ones, in my mind. Not only do the zombies attack and eat people, but they're fast-running zombies -- not shufflers. And not only do the zombie bites spread the disease, but it's the type of apocalypse where everyone comes back. You could die from a heart attack and still come back itching for human brains and flesh. But this zombie apocalypse isn't limited to people. Everything comes back from the dead. We're talking people, horses, dogs, foxes, monkeys, bears, sheep, snakes, birds, etc.

Frankly, I don't see any coming back from a zombie apocalypse when it affects all of the animals. The zombie birds should be dive-bombing everyone. The undead bugs should be creepy in from every crack. Once all of the animals come back from the dead, it's game over.

Fortunately I'm not writing this show. So you only see animal zombies when it's convenient for the plot. And they don't seem to cause too much trouble -- except for the Sisters of Mercy.

But "Z Nation" has something that most other zombie shows lack -- humor and oddball antics.

So things might seem hopeless, but we can still sit back and watch them take on "Sharknado." Or we can see what happens when zombies turn into compost at a marijuana research facility. Or we can visit Roswell, New Mexico, and see if aliens made it out of the apocalypse alive.

Speaking of Roswell, I was watching one of the season two episodes and found an unexpected shout out to nearby Riverside, Iowa, and (indirectly) Trek Fest! Check this out:

(Incidentally, when did we lose the ability to take screen grabs from Netflix. I could do it as recently as last Saturday, but now it just comes out all black. I found an annoying way around the black-out, but this was frustrating.)

Anyway, I'm looking forward to finishing up with season 2 of "Z Nation" and then tracking down the movie that just premiered on Syfy. If you haven't seen "Z Nation," you owe it to yourself to check out the show and enjoy the zombie show that maintains hope through humor.

Coming Soon to Archie Comics: REGGIE & ME Ongoing Series!!!

I learned some great news earlier today: Archie Comics will be publishing a new comic book series featuring Reggie Mantle. REGGIE & ME will feature writing by Tom DeFalco with art by Sandy Jarrell, Kelly Fitzpatrick, and Jack Morelli!

Here is how the series is described:
There is no one more loved, revered, admired and adored in Riverdale than... Reggie Mantle? Well, at least Reggie doesn't think there's anyone as loved and admired as himself. And his best friend can back that idea up -- his best friend, of course, being his dog, Vader. The unstoppable duo is known around town for pulling the funniest pranks, getting the hottest dates and throwing the best parties. And if anyone even dares to compete with them, there is going to be hell to pay. Come take a look at the life of your hero, the handsome, hilarious Reggie Mantle.
I have to admit that I'm a bit sad to see Runty replaced by Vader. But they're essentially the same dog. Maybe they decided that Vader sounds more bad-ass than Runty. Which is dog. Still...

ARCHIE, JUGHEAD, LIFE WITH KEVIN, BETTY & VERONICA, JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, and now REGGIE & ME. I'm pretty excited these days with all of the new titles that Archie Comics is publishing these days.

REGGIE & ME is scheduled for publication is early December.

Ghost Rider Makes His Debut in "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

I normally don't get to watch "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." because of my part-time job. But I've not been working this past week, plus the show just shifted back an hour. So I actually get to watch this program again!

Season Two began tonight and introduced Ghost Rider to the program. Up until now, the program has consisted of super agents and Inhumans. As far as I can tell, Ghost Rider is the first supernatural character for this program

Ghost Rider (AKA Robbie Reyes) is the Spirit of Vengeance. He is bonded to the Devil and occasionally flames up when in the presence of people whose souls have been soiled by sin.

The main battle in tonight's episode featured Ghost Rider versus Quake. It ended up resulting in a bit of draw -- though more in Robbie's favor.

Ryan Buell of "Paranormal State" Arrested // Charged with Felony Theft & Receiving Stolen Property

It's been a while since I've written anything about Ryan Buell, formerly of "Paranormal State." (Here, here, and here) I follow him on Facebook, but haven't been interested in his gaming activities on Twitch.

He's back in the news today -- but not for good reasons. Ryan was arrested on September 18th and charged with "two felony charges related to theft and stolen property", as well as misdemeanor charges of theft of services. He was arrested and charged in Centre County, PA, and remains in jail at the moment.

I'm assuming that it's connected to ongoing reports of Buell organizing tours and speaking engagements, only to cancel at the last minute and then not refund many who purchased tickets or other services.

There is a lot of discussion on his fan Facebook page about this arrest and the surrounding scuttlebutt. His PRS Bureau supporters posted a response about his arrest:

Meanwhile, Buell's mother has been posting on his public Facebook page a plea to Buell's fans:

In a nutshell, Buell's mother told her fans to stop enabling him by buying tickets to events, buying merchandise, paying to see him on Twitch, etc.

I will post more as I learn more.

Coming Soon to Channel 4 in the UK: "Damned" // Dark Comedy about Social Work

If I lived in the United Kingdom, I would be watching this new program called "Damned" on Channel 4 next Tuesday. It stars Jo Brand and Alan Davis and features of team of children's services social workers.

I've seen a couple different clips online (at this link) and have discovered an intriguing dark comedy that apparently highlights the elements of social work that I rarely write about on this blog -- because it's too close to my workplace!

In interviews, Brand has noted that her mother was a social worker and she has long been interested in spotlighting this profession and shining a little light on these good folks:
Damned is Brand’s attempt not only to tap into an underexplored area, but to counter negative portrayal of social workers by showing them as real people faced with complex decisions. The title is a nod to the no-win situation social workers invariably find themselves in.
Brand believes the public “love to hate” social workers because, although in reality they are a mixed group like any profession, they cannot shake the image of “middle-class”, “do-gooders” telling people how to live their lives.
She says: “Psychiatrists have a similar job to social workers because they have to predetermine how much harm someone is going to do, but when they make mistakes, they are not castigated in the same way…
“…when a social worker does a good thing you never find out because it’s classified information. You only find out when it goes wrong.”
Too true.

If you live in the UK, you can watch "Damned on Channel 4 on Tuesday, September 27th, at 10:00 PM.

CIVIL WAR II: Guardians of the Galaxy Stranded on Earth after Ship Blown Up

$

We accidentally picked up a copy of CIVIL WAR II #5 this week. That's right. We haven't been purchasing this latest comic book event by Marvel Comics.

Here's what it's about. A new Inhuman named Ulysses has visions of the future. Captain Marvel has seized upon this opportunity to advocate for new laws that allow SHIELD and Earth's superheroes to arrest people for pre-crimes.

So Ulysses tells everyone that Hulk will kill everyone. They all confront Bruce Banner -- who's been Hulk-free for months -- and Hawkeye ends up shooting Banner in the head. He claims that his trained eye picked up a bit of green and he knew that he had to act. Not that Spider-Man's spidey-sense picked up any danger.

Hawkeye walked and now Captain Marvel and SHIELD are going crazy with pre-crime arrests. This leads to a huge battle between the Captain Marvel (alongside the Ultimates, Alpha Flight, the Extraordinary X-Men, and the Guardians of the Galaxy) versus Iron Man (alongside the All-New Avengers, the All-New X-Men, Old Man Logan, Doctor Strange, Captain America, and the other Captain America).

I won't reveal the big spoiler (though it's hardly a spoiler anymore), but there was one development that promises to affect the Guardians of the Galaxy for the foreseeable future. Vision blew up their starship and effectively stranded the team on Earth.

That's right. Fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy will be treated to several months of Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Drax, Angela, and Groot complaining about that backwoods planet called Earth. However will they cope?

It's too bad that they don't have a starship anymore or access to anyone who could get them to astarship or a place where they make starships!

Christy from "Little Women: LA" Sued on "The People's Court"

I was poking around YouTube today and discovered an episode of "The People's Court" from earlier this year featuring Christy Lynn Gibel (or is she Christy McGinity??) from "Little Women: LA." Keep in mind that I like "The People's Court," but I cannot stand "Little Women: LA."

Here's the gist. A woman named Alexandria Pham claimed that her car was struck by reality TV star Christy Lynn Gibel on the way to work, causing just over $3,500 in car damage. Turns out that Gibel had let her car insurance lapse, so she wasn't covered at the time of the accident.

Unfortunately for Gibel, she admitted that she admitted in court that she coasted through a red light turn without paying attention to the oncoming traffic. Fortunately for Gibel, Pham's car was 16-years-old and its value exceeded the cost of the necessary repairs.

Gibel lost the court case and had to pay $2,528 for the damage that she caused.

Christians Upset Over Fleeting Images of Gay & Lesbian Parents in "Storks"

$

I don't go to the movie theater as much as I used to. There are multiple reasons for that. Long story made short, I haven't seen Storks. I'm vaguely aware that it deals with storks and some corporation that delivers babies to people. One baby gets lost in the process, leading one stork to attempt delivery of the baby in defiance of his corporate overlords. Or something like that. (Jon's Note: I'm sure that the baby eventually makes it to his family and everything works out in the end.)

Turns out that Christian movie reviewers are upset because there's a lesbian couple and a gay male couple in this movie towards the end. Like for less than a second. But you really need to know this so that you can decide if you want your money to go to anything even hinting at gay families.

From the Christian Examiner:
The Bad... The creators of Storks did tip their hat to the LGBT community, although the scene is even more brief than the alleged lesbian scene in Finding Dory. The Storks scene takes place in the film's final minutes, as we watch a rapid sequence involving babies in the arms of different parents. Most of the couples include a man and a woman, but we also see two women, and moments later two men. It's so quick that it's easy to miss (it might last a fifth of a second – if that). The scene was not a deal-breaker to me, although it might bother some conservative families.
In fact, the Christian Examiner decided to post a second article highlighting Storks' gay parenting controversy yesterday:
But there is no question about a just-as-brief (if not briefer) scene in the new animated movie Storks (PG), which has been widely applauded for some of its general themes but which also includes a rapid sequence at the film's end that shows a baby in the arms of different couples – including a lesbian couple and a gay couple. The film grossed $21 million over the weekend and finished No. 2.

Adam Holz of Focus on the Family's Plugged In department said Christian families who know about the controversy will reach different conclusions as to whether they should watch the film.

"The scene in question here is very, very short. It may be a quarter of a second or less," Holz told Christian Examiner. "It's truly a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment. If viewers aren't paying close attention, they may very well miss it entirely. Because of that, I think there's room for Christian families to make a variety of decisions on whether they want to navigate this scene or not. That said, I suspect that for many Christian families, the fact that the film includes a scene with at least two same-sex couples (two women and two men shown in a fast-moving montage) receiving babies from storks will push it out of bounds on principle, no matter how fleeting the scene is

"By including those images, the filmmakers are promoting a worldview and an understanding of family that's consistent with mainstream secular values with regard to sexuality and marriage, but one that's at odds with a biblical understanding of those important subjects. I suspect that will be enough for many Christian families to take a pass on this film."
Seriously, there are people who will refuse to see Storks because it includes a passing image of two men holding a baby and two women holding a baby for less than one second. And Christians continue to ask me why gay people don't think that there's room for us within the Church...

Johnson City, TN: ETSU Student Charged with Intimidation for Wearing Gorilla Mask to BLM Protest & Passing Out Bananas and Nooses to Black Students

I watched the most bizarre Facebook video earlier today. It took place at East Tennessee State University down in Johnson City, TN. There was a Black Lives Matter protest happening on campus. It wasn't huge. It wasn't out of control. It wasn't raucous.

Some counter-protester showed up barefoot and wearing bib overalls. And wearing a gorilla mask. And carrying a bag with Confederate imagery. Containing bananas that he would then pass out to the black BLM protesters. And little tiny nooses.

Seriously.

To their credit, the BLM protesters didn't react. They took pictures of the guy and they filmed him. But they supported each other and assured each other that he was just being a jerk.

The police eventually came and took the guy away. But not before unmasking him in front of everyone.

His name is Tristan Rettke and he's a fellow ETSU student. He came to the protest wearing the gorilla costume hoping to provoke a fight, if the police report is to be believed:
The report said after his rights were read Rettke said he found out about the protest on the social media platform Yik Yak.

Rettke told officers that he went to the store on Tuesday and purchased the rope, bananas and the gorilla mask. The suspect then stated he went to the protest with no shoes on with coveralls "in attempt to provoke the protestors."
Rettke has been charged with one count of civil rights intimidation.

Social Workers Upset Over Portrayals of Profession on British Sitcom, "Damned"

Remember "Damned," that British television series that was premiering this week on Channel 4? It's a comedy about the social work profession that had many of my social worker friends excited about fair representation of our profession. Sadly, I've only been able to watch clips of the program. It's not licensed for broadcast outside of the UK. I haven't even been able to find bootleg episodes of the program -- which is just as well as I don't want to get in trouble! But I still really want to watch this program!

That said, I heard more negative reactions to "Damned" than positive. Keep in mind that I've only heard reactions from those who are social workers. I've heard nothing from anyone who isn't in the profession.

Here were some of the chief complaints:
The pedigree was there with a cast of familiar faces including Jo Brand and Alan Davies. Brand, whose mum is a social worker, talked the show up in her promotional interviews by sharing her worries about child protection professionals being demonised in the press. How disappointing it was to then see her character use the term ‘balls deep’ in conversation with a client, flippantly discuss her past use of Class-A drugs in the office and act in a terribly unprofessional manner during a home visit that reeked of collusion.

When it comes to social work humour there’s a fine line between crass and clever. Sadly, the first episode of this show veered on the crass side by relying on swearing, unprofessional behaviours and inept workers to get a laugh from the audience. Watching it with a group of non-social workers, not one person laughed and their attention soon drifted from the screen to their mobile phones. When I found humour, it was in the familiarity of seeing the character ‘Al’ dressed like me and hearing the word ‘quorate’ (a term I’ve only ever heard used in child protection conferences) on the telly.
Reactions from an online social work forum generally agreed that "Damned" failed to portray our profession as anything resembling professionalism. It was noted that the characters were cookie-cutter concepts with little depth or originality ("the mean boss, ditsy secretary, jaded radical").

On the other hand, others pointed out that it wasn't a documentary about social work, but instead a sitcom. One comment noted that sitcoms typically highlighted "inept and failing" personalities.

One Facebook commenter made an observation earlier this week that hadn't immediately occurred to me -- but I find myself agreeing with her:
I found it refreshing that it was poking fun at us rather than the service users! I think it showed the humourous, confident and fun personalities of the people who work in this crazy but rewarding profession! The only time I thought "OK that wouldn't happen" was the full scale personal phone conversations in front of service users and taking on a visit to a family who are personally known to you, you'd surely flag that one as a conflict of interest from the get go?! But apart from that I thought it was enjoyable and I am interested to see where it goes
Personally, I think people were expecting too much about "Damned." It's clear to me that they approached the social work profession with good intentions, while also acknowledging the warts of this profession. However, these folks are also trying to create something that will entertain the public. Hopefully they will find a good balance over time as this show matures.

Pat Robertson: Demons Are Out to Destroy You Through Online Gaming!

It's been pretty hectic at work and at home, which means that I'm behind on most of my entertainment venues -- including my YouTube subscriptions. I decided to skim through them this afternoon and found this recent"Bring It On" segment from September 27th's episode of "The 700 Club." There was a brief portion of this segment that really demonstrated how clueless people like Pat Robertson truly are when it comes to gaming, RPGs, and popular entertainment.

Co-host Terry Meeuwsen shared the following question: "My husband has been playing an online game with other people and the game includes elements of witchcraft. He doesn't think it is bad, but since he has started playing the game my daughters and I have witnessed really weird things happening in our home. We've anointed the house. How do I pray for my husband and how to I convince him that he is bringing bad things int our home. He gets angry when I bring it up."

Here is Pat's answer:
Well, I think you need to get the senior person -- maybe you can find a minister, some trusted advisor -- to tell him this is a problem. There was a game called "Dungeons & Dragons." The people got into role playing. The next thing you now they were in a fantasy world that really captured them. So it is demonic. Demons are out to destroy you! And your husband needs to understand that!
I wonder if Pat Robertson and the woman who wrote for his advice have similar concerns about reruns of "Bewitched,""I Dream of Jeanie," and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch?" Pat's negative gut reaction to RPG and gaming is so stereotypical and hysterical. Their reactions are scoffed at by gamers and frankly do little more than discourage those gamers from maintaining connections to the Church.

There is no causal link between gaming and suicide. There is no link between gaming and depression. Gamers do not open themselves up to Satan or demons through their RPGs.

More than 700 million people worldwide play online games. Why is it that only people who obsess about witchcraft within their husband's game story line notice "weird things" and the rest of us manage to game without demonic interaction? (Hint: Maybe it's just you.)

You can watch the entire segment here.

Initial Thoughts on "Luke Cage"

$

I've spent way too much of this weekend binge-watching "Luke Cage" on Netflix and not enough time completing nonessential tasks, such as sleeping. I finished the final episode earlier today and can't get the show out of my head!

"Luke Cage" features Mike Colter as the title character. Luke is a former cop who spent time in prison for a crime he didn't do. Seagate Prison is a privately owned prison, complete with corrupt prison guards, an underground fight club, and a secret laboratory that ends up giving Luke superhuman strength and unbreakable skin. He made his debut in the first season of "Jessica Jones," but has since left Hell's Kitchen for Harlem.

Luke is trying to hide in the edges of society, but finds himself thrust into the center of a gang-war between Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes, "Black Mariah" Dillard, and Willis "Diamondback" Stryker. He finds himself at odds with Detective Misty Knight, who's troubled by Cage's ongoing presence whenever there's trouble. And then we're treated to the return of Claire Temple, the nurse who made her debut in season #1 of "Daredevil."

I really enjoyed this show. The characters were all spot on. Most episodes featured musical performances, which just served to enhance this series.

Here are some general thoughts:

1. Misty Knight: I spent the movie waiting for Misty Knight to get her bionic arm. There was a situation, which I assumed would l assumed would lead to this. But that sadly didn't happen.

2. Luke Cage as Power Man: I've always wondered why Luke Cage lost his Power Man code-name. I tried looking it up, but couldn't find a reason. He was called Power Man a few times in this Netflix series. I just wish that he could reclaim that name in the comic books. But that seems unlikely since Marvel Comics created a new Power Man in recent years.

3. Not-So-Happy Ending: "Luke Cage" ended similarly to "Jessica Jones," but then went in a completely different direction. Plus, two of his prime enemies are still in action, with hints that a third will return someday to challenge him again. At the very least, seeds have been planted for Luke to finally meet up with Daredevil -- presumably during the upcoming "Defenders" Netflix series or possibly in "Iron Fist."

"Luke Cage" is definitely worth the watch, so check it out as soon as you get the chance!

Harmony, MN: Estelle's Eatery Featured on PBS Program "Farm Fresh Road Trip"

I was online and learned about "Farm Fresh Road Trip," a program about locally grown food venues throughout Minnesota. It's produced by Twin Cities PBS and Minnesota Farmers Union. This weekend's episode of "Farm Fresh Road Trip" features a restaurant called Estelle's Eatery & Bar in Harmony, MN. I have family in that area and have eaten at Estelle's once or twice. It was very good food.

Estelle's is owned by Matt Brown. Most of the food items are produced locally or in surrounding communities. In his segment, Brown prepared steak crostini with goat cheese mousse, mango chutney, and chimichurri dipper. Brown's father-in-law, Jim Harstad, also appeared in the segment. It was noted that the meat served at this restaurant is produced out of his farm.

The segment was filmed back in August and premier on Minnesota Public Television last night. Five other Minnesota restaurants were also featured on this episode. You can watch the entire program here.

Iowa City: Police Notify Public of Local Clown Sightings

Creepy clowns is the thing this year. I wrote last month about a pair in Georgia who got in trouble for making false reports about clowns attempting to lure children into a van. But the whole creepy clown is a thing. The clown shows up in odd places and freak out people by their mere presence. Iowa has avoided the creepy clown phenomena. Until now.

University of Iowa Police issued a statement about reports of a clown around campus here in Iowa City. They clarified that nobody has been harmed by the clown, nor has anyone been threatened by the clown. But the Department of Public Safety would like to chat with the clown. Their number is listed above.

I've already seen people fretting about the clown reports. One person even asked me if it was true that Marion, IA, has canceled trick-or-treating this Halloween because of the clown. (Jon's Exclusive: They're not.)

Most likely, this was a student prankster. Or it's a false report.

In other words, ignore the clown and s/he will go away!

The Carneys to Return in Newest DIE KITTY DIE Series!!

I've written before (here and here) about the Carneys, a creator-owned family of carnival folks that Dan Parent co-created for Archie Comics back in the 1990s. Last November, Dan Parent and Fernando Ruiz began whispering about the launch of a new top-secret mystery project. For reasons that I wrote about here, I speculated that they were launching a new comic book featuring the Carneys. Turns out that they were talking about DIE KITTY DIE! That four-issue series was published following a successful Kickstarter campaign and it turned out to be a lot of fun!

They are currently working on a second DIE KITTY DIE! series. But check this out. Look who's scheduled to appear in DIE KITTY DIE: HOLLYWOOD OR BUST!!!

It's the Carneys!!!!

Fernando Ruiz is a great artist. One of the best. And I really can't wait to see these guys back in action! I already told them on Facebook that this one pic sold me on their new series. That's how psyched I am right now!!

Archie Comics to Publish RIVERDALE One-Shot Comic Book Based on New CW Television Series

I really haven't written too much about the upcoming "Riverdale" television series that's scheduled to debut in early 2017 on CW. I know that some people are leery about the show, but I'm pretty excited about it!

I learned today that Archie Comics will be publishing a RIVERDALE one-shot comic book. The comic book will be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa "and key members of the show's writers room" and will feature art by Alitha Martinez. RIVERDALE will provide background to the "Riverdale" television series.

We don't have a release date yet for the RIVERDALE one-shot, but expect that it will come out in early 2017. Depending on how well it sells, we could see an ongoing RIVERDALE comic book series.

Crowdfund Recommendation: DIE KITTY DIE: HOLLYWOOD OR BUST! by Fernando Ruiz and Dan Parent // Plus: Check Out the Carneys!

I mentioned earlier this week that the Carneys were scheduled to return to comic books in a new DIE KITTY DIE: HOLLYWOOD OR BUST project by Fernando Ruiz and Dan Parent. I received an email first thing this morning telling me that they launched their latest Kickstarter campaign. I instantly tossed in my pledge and can't wait for this project to get funded!

Here is the concept:
Kitty Ravencraft, the beautiful magical witch and star of her own comic book, returns! This time Kitty is on top of the World! Her new comic book series is a huge success and she's once again the talk of the comic shops! Naturally, Kitty's publisher wants to capitalize on her new-found popularity with a big budget blockbuster Kitty movie! To make this happen, Kitty goes off to Hollywood, but once again she finds herself in danger! Someone is out to kill Kitty and this time even the reader won't know who's doing it or why! A lot of Kitty's old crowd from Die Kitty Die like Little Satan, Maxi Millions, and of course everyone's favorite kid corpse, Dippy the Dead Kid will be back. Some will be on Kitty's side and some of course are out to get her! Plus we'll see lots of new faces joining Kitty's cast. She'll face new menaces like the unstoppable Hexecutioner and she'll be aided by new allies like the cult-favorite family of freaks, the Carneys!Die Kitty Die: Hollywood Or Bust will be Kitty's biggest... scariest... and funniest adventure yet! It will be magical. Hopefully she'll survive!
Dan and Fernando are seeking $25,000 in pledges. As of this moment, they have received $9,309. You have 29 more days to make this Kickstarter campaign a success!

Incidentally, the Carneys were mentioned above and we even received a glimpse of my favorite Circus folks in the post. But we got to see a full image of the Carneys in this wonderful drawing by Fernando Ruiz! Beautiful!!

North Liberty, IA: Man Accused of Abusing Cat

North Liberty police have charged a 25-year-old man with first-offense animal torture for allegedly abusing a cat over the course of at least one month.

According to the Iowa City Press-Citizen, Gibson Neblett is accused of abusing the cat, named Melvin, "starting in August or earlier, through Sept. 30:"
Melvin suffered bruising near his pelvis in August, and he was taken to a vet "dragging his hind limbs and panting" on Sept. 3, the complaint says. X-rays revealed rib fractures in various stages of healing, and Melvin had hip-joint fractures.

The complaints say Melvin also suffered severe soft tissue damage and needed surgery.
According to the news, the cat's owner told the police that Neblett was the only person with it when the injuries occurred. He faces up to two years in prison or a jail sentence not to exceed one year if convicted.

It's worth nothing that he's only been charged with this crime, not convicted of it.

Riverdale High Discovered Adult Coloring Books in BETTY & VERONICA JUMBO COMICS DIGEST #247!

I love it when Archie Comics grabs hold of a current fad and runs with it. BETTY & VERONICA JUMBO COMICS DIGEST #247 has one of those moments. Mr. Lodge has discovered the joy of adult coloring books -- and the peace and tranquility that comes from that recreational activity!

It turns out that coloring relaxes adults and relieves stress. That means that Archie can come to Lodge Mansion and cause all sorts of trouble and Mr. Lodge barely reacts!

Betty learns about adult coloring books and decides to introduce the fad to the teens at Riverdale High by commissioning Chuck to create all sorts of black and white drawings that will be included in the school newspaper.

The end result is that Riverdale High is now one of the most zen school in America!

Of course, nothing last forever. Archie ends up breaking the peace -- without even trying! I won't spoil how it happens, but it's definitely worth checking out!

"The Coloring Craze" features story & pencils by Dan Parent, inks by Bob Smith, letters by Jack Morelli, and colors by Glenn Whitmore.

R.I.P. Jamie Madrox (AKA Multiple Man)

$

Marvel Comics recently revealed that the Terrigan Mists -- which mutate the various Inhuman characters into their Inhuman bodies -- is toxic to mutants. Terrigan Mists kill mutants. It sterilizes them. It gives them something called M-Pox, a disease that affects such notable mutants as Rogue, Sunspot, and Toad.

After the recent "Secret Wars" crossover, events in the Marvel Universe jumped ahead by eight months. We learned about the M-Pox. We learned that Cyclops is the most hated mutant around (again) for doing something pretty horrible to the Inhumans. And the various X-characters are scattered around the globe and in Limbo trying to survive the Terrigan Mists.

Marvel Comics just published DEATH OF X #1, which goes back eight months to the point where the X-Men realized that the Terrigan Mists are toxic to mutants. A huge cloud enveloped Muir Island and killed off dozens of unnamed mutants -- and one big name character.

Marvel Comics killed off Jamie Madrox (AKA Multiple Man) with barely a tear. He's been a mainstay of the X-Men titles since the early 1990s when he joined and later led X-Factor. But he was gassed to death in this backstory title. And the world seemingly doesn't care.

A few years back, there was "Civil War" event where the heroes rallied behind Captain America and behind Iron Man. Tony tried recruiting the X-Men and Emma Frost ended up telling him to bug off. "Where were you when terrorists were blowing up our school buses and killing our kids? Where were you when the government sent Sentinels after us and killed our kind?"

Emma Frost was right back then. The simple fact is that Marvel Comics' superheroes really don't care that much about the X-Men or the various mutants. The Inhumans blew up and bomb and spread poison throughout the planet and they're barely raising a hand to solve this crisis.

Apparently, humanity doesn't care if the mutants slowly die from a painful infection that caused their skin to boil and their bodies to shut down. One might worry that the Terrigan Mists might prove equally toxic to regular humanity -- just at a slower pace. But that's something to worry about once folks like Jamie Madrox kick the bucket.

I'm not too worried about Jamie. Colossus came back after being cremated. Nightcrawler returned from the grave after having a robotic arm burst through his chest. A man who can create clones of himself could easily be discovered hiding out in some safe house at some future date.

But I am pretty disgusted by how Marvel Comics' heroes treat their mutant heroes and comrades these days.
