Rumor: Marvel Comics to Regain Movie Rights to "Fantastic Four?"

$

I wrote last year about rumors that Marvel Comics planned to cancel its FANTASTIC FOUR comic book as a snub at Fox Studios, who owned the movie rights to the Fantastic Four. Marvel Comics didn't want to provide free publicity for the movie. Since then, Marvel Comics did indeed pull the FF from all new publicity images. It did indeed cancel the FANTASTIC FOUR. The Thing has been shunted over to the Guardians of the Galaxy. Human Torch has been shunted over to the Uncanny Avengers and to one of the Inhumans books.

Of course, Fox Studios keeps bombing when it comes to FANTASTIC FOUR movies. Which probably explains new rumor that Marvel Comics has regained the movie rights to its first modern super-team -- and that Marvel Studios might be having its own FF film in 2020:
Given that Fox's Fantastic Four reboot sputtered so dramatically over the summer, it's little surprise that the studio's redoubling its attention on a property with a proven history at the box-office: X-Men...

According to our source, Fox were given the TV rights for X-Men in exchange for Fantastic Four. The deal's been in the works for some time, we're told, and further, the timing of Marvel's recent announcement of its movie slate leading up to the year 2020 and the X-Men TV series is no coincidence.
You may remember that there are three, so-far untitled films on Marvel's schedule in five years' time. We're told that one of those films is a Fantastic Four movie.

We don't have an independent source to back this claim up, so we'll have to treat it with a certain amount of caution for now. But given the reception Fantastic Four received earlier this summer, it makes sense that Fox would be receptive to the idea of a deal with Marvel, particularly if it meant wresting something as major and lucrative as the X-Men TV rights from Marvel's grasp.
I am hopeful that Marvel Studios can do a better job of adapting the Fantastic Four to film than Fox Studios. Personally, I would stop trying to come up with new origins for the FF. I would stop trying to do weird things to Doctor Doom and his powers.

Pat Robertson: You Should Shun Your Grandson's Partner During the Holidays!

Another day, another opportunity for Pat Robertson and "The 700 Club" to remind people that gay people are to be shunned.

Today's Bring It On segment brought a lengthy question by a viewer named Jim: "Our family is planning a big get together for Thanksgiving, and our grandson who is gay, has asked that he be allowed to bring his "friend." We have made it clear in the past that we love him and he will always be welcome to be a part of our lives, but we will not be a part of the lifestyle he has chosen. I have told him before that the presence of his sex partners would not be welcome in our house. The recent decision made by the Supreme Court does not change God's word. Some members of the family seem to think my stance on the subject is a bit harsh, but thankfully most of them agree with me. Am I right, or should I have handled it differently? Should I allow his partner to come for holiday dinner?"

Here is Pat's response:
Pat Robertson: Of course, it's your call. You do what you want to do, but I just believe that you're taking the right stand. Otherwise, you become an enabler and you're condoning that. Chances are -- there's a real good chance that he might come out of that so-called lifestyle. But if you're going along with it... He says, "Mom likes it. It's okay." He's trying to push you, just like these... He's trying to get you to affirmatively accept what he's doing and you don't want to do it so he's trying to force you to do something. And you say, "He doesn't have the right to bring somebody into a family gathering. I mean, what if your son is dating a stripper and he wants to bring her home for Thanksgiving dinner and the family says "NO! We don't want her in our house!"

Terry Meeuwsen: It's inappropriate for a grandson to ask his grandparents to go against their moral value!

Pat Robertson: Of course it is! It's outrageous that he would do that. But that's what's happening. Let's push the envelope. Push people and see how far they'll bend. And what you're doing is exactly right by saying, "No! I'm not going to let it happen!"
First, when did it become inappropriate for people to ask if they could bring somebody to a family gathering. You can answer "yes" or "no," but it's not inappropriate to ask the question.

Second, maybe in light of the forementioned Supreme Court decision the grandson plans to actually marry his partner and wants to provide his grandparents the chance to meet this man. The grandparents might not like this, but he could be offering them an opportunity.

Thirdly, Pat really got worked up by this question. The gay grandson was obviously trying to force his grandparents into something awful when he simply asked if his friend could come with him. Sometimes, he really likes to read a lot more into these scenarios than what's in the actual question.

Lastly, I think it's funny that the one commenter (as of this writing) condemned Thanksgiving Day as a Satanic ritual because it's not in the Bible.

It's certainly the grandparents' choice to push away their grandson's partner, but they also need to know that they are also gradually pushing away their grandson. He will eventually settle down with this man or someone else and his relationship with his aging grandparents will gradually decrease as they refuse to invest in his life, as well as refuse to allow him to fully maintain ties to their lives.

What Is the Hammer of Thor?

I was reading through some old Charlton Comics online when I discovered a story from 1959 featuring Thor -- but not the Thor who usually shows up in comic books! This Thor made his first appearance in OUT OF THIS WORLD #11 and seems to have appeared in only that one origin.

Thor was a young Norwegian from centuries past. He lived in the wilderness with his mother and father -- though not Odin or Friga as commonly believed. This Thor was scrawny and sickly and often teased by his peers. His father tried to toughen him up, but Thor preferred to hide away in the wilderness and living the life of a hermit.

Thor discovered a secret cave. There was an eerie light within that cave, which Thor liked to basked under during his daily meditations. Strangely, this energy caused Thor to slowly transform into a muscle-bound hunk! Not only that, but Thor discovered a hammer-shaped chunk of metal within the cave that literally hummed with energy! Not only that, but it created a huge mess when thrown at other objects!

Soon enough, the Huns invaded Norway. I don't remember that battle too much from my history books, but this is the reason for that. The Huns discovered Thor communing with nature and decided to attack the young Norwegian. That didn't go over very well.

The surviving Huns were quickly chased away and Norway was saved! Thor was free to commune with nature again. And the mysterious cave has remained a secret ever since!

I keep thinking that it would be great to read more stories about the Hammer of Thor. He has the potential to be something big. We have a template here, but not much else. Somebody could do something really great with Thor and his crazy hammer.

Maybe that somebody could be me...

Candidate for Montgomery County Register of Wills Plans to Refuse Marriage Licenses to Gay Couples

Sharon Thomas is currently the mayor of Pottstown, PA, and she is running for the position of Montgomery County Register of Wills. In Pennsylvania, the Register of Wills is responsible for processing marriage license applications. This campaign is in the news because Thomas has announced that she is opposed to gay marriage and that she will refuse to process marriage licenses for same-sex couples if elected into office:
Statements by Pottstown Mayor Sharon Thomas in the usually sleepy race for register of wills have once again put Montgomery County in the spotlight in Pennsylvania’s debate about same sex marriage.

Thomas, a Republican, told The Intelligencer newspaper that she will not personally issue any same sex marriage licenses if she wins the race against incumbent Democrat D. Bruce Hanes.

Instead, as in the now-famous case of Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who spent five days in jail after defying a court order to issue same-sex licenses, Thomas said she will seek court permission to allow the licenses to be issued by a subordinate.

“I am opposed to gay marriages on religious grounds, and my conscience will not allow me to sign off on marriage certificates for gay couples,” Thomas, an ordained minister who is serving her second nonconsecutive term as Pottstown’s mayor, told The Intelligencer. “People should not have to violate their conscience to run or to serve.”

Thomas said, “I am not an obstructionist and will not force my values on others.”
Thomas has been compared here, as well as other places to Kim Davis. The difference between her and Davis, assuming that Thomas is being honest about her intentions, is that Thomas doesn't plan on halting all marriage licenses withing her county. She instead plans to delegate marriage licenses for same-sex constituents to her employees.

It does make you wonder though why she wants to run for a job that's responsible for something that she finds morally objectionable...

"Survivors" 40th Anniversary: Episode 24 ("New Arrivals")

This is the twenty-fourth in a series of blog posts dedicated to the 40th anniversary of BBC's "Survivors" television series. "Survivors"followed a core group of characters who managed to survived a devastating viral outbreak -- one which managed to kill off somewhere between 95-99% of humanity. Society has crumbled and now those who remain must relearn the old way if they have any hope of surviving much longer.

Whitecross was introduced to five new recruits in this latest episode, titled "New Arrivals." We are introduced to a young man named Mark Carter (played by Ian Hastings) and his group of teen and young twentysomething followers (Melanie, Sally, Dave, and Pete). Mark makes a strong first impression with Jack and Charles when he begins stabbing all of the cattle to treat a form of bloat. Of course, he doesn't explain what he's up to or why he has begun stabbing their cattle until after the cows had been treated.

Mark Carter and the Carter Commune
Not only that, but he begins running though a litany of everything that Whitecross was doing wrong -- complete with a contemptuous sneer! Needless to say, Pet was not happy when Mark began criticizing her pig sty!

Soon enough, Mark Carter and his people have set up headquarters within the Old Mill. And -- happy to finally find some people his own age -- Alan moves in with this bunch!

Carter's Commune
But I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. There is a reason that Mark and the others have come to Whitecross. Ruth had been called out to their old settlement last week to treat a flu bug. There were several deaths -- mostly older residents -- and the settlement ended up falling apart. Ruth recruited Mark and his bunch, but there was another segment of that old settlement that went elsewhere. It seems that there was a strong generation gap within that group that never got bridged!

Unfortunately, the messenger who'd come for Ruth had also left behind some flu! This ended up infecting Arthur -- and Mina and Peggy! It's sad to say, but Arthur ended up dying about midway through the episode! Even Jack fell ill -- which resulted in a soccer-fueled delusion.

Ruth gradually realized that the older people were succumbing to the flu because they lacked hope and morale. They were lonely and felt out of place. That's why the younger people either weren't falling ill or they were getting better faster.

R.I.P. Arthur
Meanwhile, Mark Carter might hold Charles and the other older people with contempt, but he definitely approves of Greg and his plan to produce methane for fuel! He develops a five-year plan for Charles that relies heavily on Greg's ability to produce methane. Charles is dubious. After all, Greg hasn't actually produced any usable methane yet. But Mark insists that the matter be brought to a vote by the entire community -- and that he become responsible for all of Whitecross' agricultural planning!

The meeting is held and it quickly falls into a "young versus old" competition. Charles largely resists most of these changes and Mark insists that all of the changes be made or else he will leave. Greg finally speaks up and asks about Mark's leadership at his old settlement -- the same leadership that resulted in mass desertion, suicides, and illness. Needless to say, Mark got fed up and stormed off!

Fortunately for Whitecross' long-term survival, all of the other members of Carter's Commune decided that their new home wasn't a terrible place. That means that we now have four new permanent members of Whitecross! But they still plan to live in the Old Mill away from the old people.

Mark Carter then rode off into the sunset with a contemptuous forecast for Whitecross' survival. And the voting in favor of Mark's recommendations -- but with Charles' continued leadership!

I don't know why this struck me, but it was interesting that Jack participated in the group meeting, given that he'd just been wandering around all sweaty and delirious earlier that afternoon!

I should be back to my regular routine next week. I've had two weeks of high school and college reunions, which has affected my writing. I won't be traveling at all next week or for most of November. Our next episode will be "Over the Hills."

One person was killed and five others were injured Saturday evening after an armed shooter fired into a crowd at Zombicon, a zombie-themed festival in Fort Myers, FL.

Expavious Tyrell Taylor (age 20) was pronounced dead at the scene of shooting. Four of the other shooting victims were treated at area hospitals and a fifth shooting victim refused medical treatment.

The shooter has not yet been identified and fled the scene of the shooting. An image of the suspected shooter is included below.

There were initial questions about whether or not the shooter specifically targeted any of his victims. However, police have stated their belief that this was a random attack.

Zombicon Shooting Suspect
Zombicon's organizers issued the following statement:

One Final "Archie: Riverdale Rescue": Clay Walker Finally Arrives!

I began writing about the "Archie: Riverdale Rescue" iOS gaming app way back in October 2013. Since then, the game has expanded to PC users. It's an oddly addictive game where you are tasked with the improvement and beautification of Riverdale USA using a variety of recognizable characters, such as Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica. A big part of the game also involves building emotional bonds between the various characters, leading to romantic couples, BFFs, and overall friends.

Since then, I've written many posts about the game, its features, and its seasonal updates. Then last week I wrote about the game's upcoming demise. Which made me sad.

My sadness was temporarily halted last week when I discovered that you could buy-in one final character: Clay Walker!

Clay Walker is a character from the now-canceled LIFE WITH ARCHIE series. He was introduced in LIFE WITH ARCHIE #16 when he married an adult Kevin Keller. Clay later got shot in LWA #22, but eventually got better.

There were indications in June 2014 that he was being added to the game. But he wasn't. The "Riverdale Rescue" folks eventually told me that "perfection takes time! We definitely haven't forgotten about Clay, and we'll also have some other content just for Kevin in our next updates."

Personally, I think that they were just putting me off. My hunch is that they couldn't figure out how to introduce an adult gay character to the game and have him interact with his future gay husband who still happens to be a teen!

Regardless, I was literally cheering in my bedroom when I woke to news that Clay Walker was finally in "Riverdale Rescue!" I wrote about it on Facebook and even called Riverdale Podcast to share the news with Jonathan!

I put off writing about Clay and "Riverdale Rescue" until I got a better handle on his storyline. I finally finished Clay's Quests. And his story is Kevin's story... almost literally.

Here is Clay's general storyline: He arrives in Riverdale and has a meal at Pop Tate's. He then goes to the school and meets some people. Betty sees him and develops a huge crush. Clay confides in Jughead that he is gay and that he doesn't want to upset Betty, because he knows that she has a crush on him. Jughead and Ethel eventually break the news to Betty. Betty and Clay bond (despite her unrequited crush) and become BFFs.

Replace Clay with Kevin and Betty with Veronica (plus, add in a scene where Clay and Jughead have a all-you-can-eat food contest) and this is pretty much Kevin Keller's intro story that has been recycled for Clay Walker.

Which pretty much reinforces my belief that they had no clue what to do with Clay Walker after they decided to include him in the game! Still, it's nice to have Clay around. I'm enjoying the opportunity to ship Kevin and Clay together in the game.

All that's to say: Thanks "Riverdale Rescue" for two years of fun preoccupation and for bringing one of my favorite comic book couples back together for one final adventure!

Pat Robertson: Christians Should Leave Churches That Support Gay Marriage // Plus: Gay Relationships Are the Ultimate Departure from God!

CBN's "The 700 Club" has been actively railing against gay people and our families over the past few weeks. Maybe they always obsessed on this topic, but I don't remember seeing material on the show quite this often. Right now, you can count on something appearing on the program on a daily basis.

The Bring It On segment is where the subject came up today. Co-host Wendy Griffith shared the following question by a viewer named Jerry: "Our church is attempting to instill same-sex marriage. I am no Bible scholar, but I cannot find one piece of scripture to support such a thing. Do I leave if it is approved, or do I fight with prayer?"

Here is Pat's answer:
The apostle Paul makes it very clear in Romans. It's the last phase of the human rebellion against God. That's what this whole homosexual thing is. It is the last phase of rebellion against God. Where men give up the natural use of women and start having sex with each other. Where women give up the natural use of men and start having sex with each other. It is the ultimate departure from God. And so you get two of these people. You're going to marry them? And you somehow think that's going to be in the church? If I were you, I'd complain bitterly and get out of that church as fast as I could. What fellowship has Christ with Belial? You don't want to have fellowship with those people!
Just in case you thought that the majority of the Church would come into fellowship with gay Christians or gay-affirming Christians. To them, we are the "ultimate departure from God." We are demons to their Christ.

"Sesame Street" Creates New Autistic Character Named Julia!

"Sesame Street" has launch an educational and awareness initiative about autism (you can check out the materials here). Part of that program is a new character named Julia, a "girl who has bright orange hair and big green eyes" and who is also diagnosed with autism.

When I originally read about Julia, I assumed that she would be appearing as a Muppet on the television program, but so far she seems limited to a book called "We're Amazing, 1, 2, 3!"

Julia displays some of the quirky characteristics often associated with autism. She lines up her toys in perfect order. Her social skills are a bit off. Her sensory experiences sometimes becoming overwhelming.

But she seems like a sweet little girl. Plus, Elmo ad Abby both like her, so how bad can she be??

Gunshots Today Near Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids

Gunshots were fired today near the campus of Kirkwood Community College over in Cedar Rapids, IA, this morning. The news reports on the subject was fairly brief:
Cedar Rapids Police are investigating a report of shots fired near the Kirkwood Community College Campus. In an email sent by Kirkwood CC, officials say no one was hurt. The shots were reported at College Park apartments. The suspect vehicle has left the area. Police say there is no threat to campus at this time.
It's worth pointing out that this took place near campus and not at campus. Plus, nobody was injured.

I made the mistake of reading the article's Facebook responses and was treated  to a series of posts attacking gun control advocates, as well as people from Chicago (That's code for "black." My multiracial son is regularly told to go back to Chicago even though he was born and raised in Iowa, as was his birth father. Heck, none of his birth family is from Chicago; but adults tell him to go back to Chicago when he walks to school. Note that this annoys and offends me. *Mini-rant over*)

Anyway, here are the comments on the KGAN Facebook page:

It's possible that the person who fired this gun is black. It's possible that he or she is another race. It's possible that it was fired at someone else. It's possible that it was an accidental discharge. It's possible that we will never know.

But I'm tired of the rude, racist remarks that follow these types of reports.

Christmas Arrives Early in Riverdale in WORLD OF ARCHIE CHRISTMAS ANNUAL #53!

Wanna know one of my biggest pet peeves? It's Christmas-themed stories, decorations, or events that occur before Thanksgiving Day! I'm still struggling to get in the mood for Halloween and stores are trying to get me to buy Christmas gifts for my kids! No way!

That's why I'm a little disgruntled by WORLD OF ARCHIE CHRISTMAS ANNUAL #53, which just got published the past Wednesday. You would think that Archie Comics would try loading the stories with Halloween tales, but they instead decided to go with a Christmas storyline instead!

The first story feature Little Archie and the Riverdale Gang as they line up at the mall with their Christmas wish-lists. Everyone is excited to see Mall Santa -- who, strangely enough, does NOT want to see these kids. He's been warned about this bunch by other Mall Santa, but I'm still not sure what exactly he's being warned off about. I mean, the kids are quirky, but it's not like they were mean to him!

Anyway, here were three things that I enjoyed about this story:

1. Jughead Loves the Cookies!: Juggie is certainly clever with the lead-ins! He did his calculations and figured out that Santa Claus gets a lot of cookies from all of the children around the world. Juggie isn't terribly interested in toys, but he loves the cookies! So why not help Santa gain control over his BMI and spread out the cookie-lovin' a bit??

2. Reggie Has Three Great Wishes!: Reggie really needs to get himself a genii. He's the master at coming up with three great wishes: 1. Get me a sports car! 2. Make me old enough to drive! 3. Sign me up for a Driver's Ed class! Genius!

3. Even Mall Santa Has Some Magic!: I'm not sure how he did it, but Mall Santa managed to magically transform his hat from bright red to matching green when he got fed up and quit his Mall Santa gig! Ronnie better hope he doesn't have lice!

My Day at the 2015 Iowa City Metaphysical Expo

I spent most of today at the Johnson County Fairgrounds attending the Iowa City Metaphysical Expo. I attended last year's expo, largely on a whim. I believe that I've shared that I am a bit of an agnostic when it comes to psychics, ghosts, and the paranormal. I want to believe, but I definitely struggle with doubt. But I had a lot of fun and I gained a new chiropractor out of the expo last year, so I have patiently waited all year for the 2015 expo to arrive!

Once again, the admission price was completely affordable ($5) and there was plenty of free parking. There were plenty of exhibitors, including psychics, ghost hunters, spiritual advisers, Reiki practitioners, aura interpreters, shamanic healers, and local shops that specialize in oils, crystals, and other spirituality-themed merchandise.

Similar to last year, Iowa City Metaphysical Expo has a wide range of speakers scheduled throughout the day. I didn't arrive until around 11:30 AM, so I missed my opportunity to see either of the first classes.

I briefly attended an event called Paranormal Investigation: Unknown Darkness. Unknown Darkness is a team of paranormal investigators from nearby Cedar Rapids, IA. They are also the official team connected with Edinburgh Manor in nearby Jones County, IA, and some of their members were featured on Travel Channel's recent Edinburgh Manor-themed episode of "Ghost Adventures." They spoke about the history of paranormal investigation and, I believe, talked about their experiences with the "Ghost Adventures" program. However, since I saw their program last year, I decided to leave a bit early to attend a conflicting panel...

That conflicting panel was Connecting with Spirit Guides & Departed Loved Ones by Don Marlette. He shared some of his story and then guided audience members on learning a meditative process that opens us up to communing with spirit guides and deceased loved one. I was able to get into the guided meditation, but I wasn't able to get deep enough to actually make a connection. But, practice makes perfect.

I then took a break for lunch and ended up chatting for about fifteen minutes with Mr. Marlette. We talked about our families and I asked him some questions about how he made the career shift from where he was to where he is now. He was a very nice man.

Afterwards, I attended the first of two keynote events: Eden Energy Medicine by Amy Williams. Her event explored the concept of BodyMind Consciousness (i.e., the idea that everything is energy, space, and consciousness). She demonstrated different tools and practices that people can use to manipulate energy to relieve stress and promote certain types of healing.

I then attended the second keynote event, which was a Gallery Reading by Eric and Bart AKA 2GuysInTheKnow. They offer paired readings to their customers. They shared how their own abilities manifested and also why they decided to create their unique dual readings.

The rest of that hour was spent with them offering mini readings to random expo attendees, including me! We drew numbers and they managed to randomly draw my number before the hour was up. I asked for a vocational forecast, as my career is not as secure as it was a couple of years ago due to changes with Iowa's Medicaid system (which is a story for another day!!). The gist of their answer was that 1. I might be ready to make a change to a more secure position, but the position that I have been seeking isn't there yet... but it will eventually arrive! They encouraged me to stick things out. Additionally, they said that this time next year, everything will change when it comes to my work. Maybe that means that I will have a new job. Maybe that means that I will have the same job, but things will be different (most likely scenario). Or maybe I'll be doing something completely different!

I then began exploring the exhibition hall. Unlike last year where I only spoke with the chiropractor, I actually tried out some of the more metaphysical exhibitors in the hall! First, I finally tried out Reiki! I received a 15-minute session by Kelly Carrell of ReikiTree. She was really nice and did a general session for me. She focused a bit on my head, as I was feeling a lot of stress and heavy energy in my forehead area. I definitely could tell a difference afterwards and the experience was generally relaxing.

I then got a reading from Lauracle. She is a clairvoyant, clairaudient, and clairsentient who offered 30 minute readings. She provided a general reading for me, describing me as a healer and intelligent man. She shared some past life information with me. I then asked her about my vocational forecast (as described above). She also indicated that my job situation is fairly stable for the next several months, but that it might be in my best interest to proactively explore other opportunities in 2016 -- if only to offer myself some sense of control over my life. She also encouraged me to consider college again within the next five years -- after that, it won't be a productive endeavor for me. Over all, Laura was very nice.

I then chatted briefly with the folks at Unknown Darkness about their group and about "Ghost Adventures." I told them that I thought it was cheesy when the program had actors ramble through the grounds at Edinburgh Manor. But I told them it was still cool that they got to appear on the show. They talked to me about various paranormal investigations that they have planned in the near future and encouraged me to come along sometime. Who knows? (If I do, you know that I'll write about it here on this blog!)

I then met with Lynn at Prairie Land Pagan Radio. Prairie Land Pagan Radio is a Pagan-themed Internet radio program that currently airs on the weekends on Blog Talk Radio. The station is based out of Coralville, IA. I told him about KICI 105.3 FM, that low-power FM station that I am now currently working with. I told him that we plan to have KICI active in Iowa City and Coralville in 2016 and encouraged him to get involved with the station for terrestrial broadcasting opportunities. He seemed interested, so hopefully this new connection will eventually bear fruit!

I then went to a class called Awaken & Strengthen Your Supernatural Abilities by Kimberli Ridgeway of Dreamwalker LLC. The class was meant to awaken suppressed talents and abilities and it was interesting. But it was also intense. I felt like a kindergartner in a calculus class!

Lastly, I attended a class called Sacred Activism by Michelle Stafford of the Illuminations Healing Arts Center. Sacred Activism is a combination of spiritual knowledge with compassion-based service to humanity. It was a really interesting discussion, which resonated with how live my own belief system. It was a good program to end the afternoon!

Once again, the Iowa City Metaphysical Expo was lots of fun and well organized! They already have a date for next year's event: October 15, 2016. Most likely, I will be there! Thanks guys!

"Survivors" 40th Anniversary: Episode 25 ("Over The Hills")

This is the twenty-fifth in a series of blog posts dedicated to the 40th anniversary of BBC's "Survivors" television series. "Survivors" followed a core group of characters who managed to survived a devastating viral outbreak -- one which managed to kill off somewhere between 95-99% of humanity. Society has crumbled and now those who remain must relearn the old way if they have any hope of surviving much longer.

This episode focused a lot on Melanie, Alan, and the rest of the "new arrivals" from last episode. It seems that the remains of "Carter's Commune" have gained two new members prior to this episode, Ann and Barbara (played by Nula Conwell and Linda Robson). The young people live, love, and play together in the Old Mill. Melanie regulates the womens' menstrual cycles to reduce the likelihood of pregnancy.

Except that this planning wasn't terribly successful for young Sally, who had a dalliance with Alan:

Soon enough, Ruth confirmed that Sally is roughly three months pregnant with Alan's baby, except that Alan has eyes for Mel:

Sally wants Alan to marry her -- or, as they typically do in "Survivors," share a home --, but Alan doesn't want to be tied down. He tells her that everyone will help raise the baby. This doesn't impress Sally much.

And then there is Hubert he keeps on leering at Sally and calling her a slut. Remind me again why they don't have a special ghetto at Whitecross for Hubert to live in where he cannot interact with anyone else??

This leads Sally to seek a permanent solution to her pregnancy problem:

Charles is horrified that Sally wants an abortion. He's even more upset when he learns that most of the women at Whitecross don't want babies. He decides to throw a party celebrating Sally's pregnancy in an attempt to convince her that giving birth in a post-apocalyptic world is easy-peasy.

Charles makes a huge speech about how wonderful it is that they have a new baby coming to Whitecross and how they will all be mothers and fathers for the baby and that the baby will gain new siblings in the form of Paul, John, Lizzie, etc. I can't help but wonder what happened to Baby Matthew from Episode 19? It was mentioned that Whitecross has only had one baby, and yet Mina also has a little baby boy. Did he die between episodes??

The teens and twentysomethings run off to the Mill to throw a party. They have the place wired up with psychedelic lights and a record player that are all hooked up to an exercise bike for power. Pete pedals and Paul drums and the rest of them dance like crazy!

They then decide to do their special Game. Listen to John describe the Game:

We then realize that Sally is playing the Game, with the help of Melanie, Ann, and Barbara in order to induce a miscarriage. Sadly -- and much to Charles' chagrin -- she succeeds!

But not all is lost! Greg manages to harness his methane gas and produce a working engine! He plans to use this to operate a tractor. This proves much more motivating for the younger crowd than Sally's pregnancy. Mel agrees to quit playing the Game.

Here are some interesting odds and ends. There are currently 28 people at Whitecross. I'm assuming that this includes all of the children. I need to run through the numbers on my own sometime soon.

We learn that Jenny has been avoiding Greg at night so that she won't get pregnant for a second time.

We learn that Pet really wants to get pregnant, but has been unsuccessful so far. She tried seducing Greg in this episode. She figured that she shows that he's fertile, so he seemed like a sure bet for getting her pregnant. However, Charles never told her about the other women that he impregnated earlier in the series! (Jon's Note: I'm not quite certain that I believe that revelation. I could have sworn that she was around when Charles told Greg about his other children earlier this season.)

We have one more balloon-filled episode left in Series 2. It's called "New World" and it heralds the start of something completely new in Series 3!

Who Is No Name?

I've written a few times about Charlton Neo, which is a resurrection of the classic Charlton Comics lines; as well as Pix-C Web Comics, which features public domain characters from Charlton Comics as well as a few other original characters. Pix-C Web Comics features strips from a variety of genres, including superhero, horror, action, and humor romance. But they recently launched three new strips, including an action/adventure tale titled NO NAME!

NO NAME is a new character created by P.D. Angel Gabriel with dialogue by Mort Todd. This weekly strip appears to be set in a post-apocalyptic future.

"No Name" is a mysterious traveler who lacks memories of his past. He has no history, no family, and no name. However, he finds himself being drawn to the "City of Answers," which is nestled deep within the jungle that he calls home.

His journey to the City of Answers is quickly interrupted by a young woman in a purple dress. She appears to be a sacrificial offering to "the Protectors." We don't know much about them except that you need to have their favor if you want to travel on "The Road." Oh, and they're big!

I don't know much about Izor the Protector, but he's definitely kind of an eyesore!

I'm still not sure exactly where this story is heading, but so far it's been a lot of fun! You too can read No Name's first adventure -- not to mention Yang, No Name, Tuffy Turtle, N.E.O., Skyman, The Knightingales, Deathwatch, The Spookman, Sadistik, Ms. Molecule, and several other great characters, by becoming a patron of Pix-C Web Comics. Those who become patrons (for as little as $1 per month) gain access to several weekly online comic strips. The more you pledge, the more perks you qualify for. I've been contributing $30 per month towards this venture. I encourage to you to become a patron too!

Pat Robertson Struggles to Oppose Gay Marriage Without Being Condescending or Malicious

CBN's "The 700 Club" once again railed against gay people and our families earlier today.

Co-Host Wendy Griffith shared another gay marriage question on the program's Bring It On" segment when she shared Sherri's question: "I recently saw a letter written to the editor of our local newspaper by a young college student. He claims that Romans 13:1-4 clearly supports the Supreme Court gay marriage decision! He writes: “Since the Bible says that government is from God, therefore everyone must submit to the government! Even Christians! These verses will not only shut up the bigots, but will settle this argument once and for all!” Using the Bible this way to validate their sinful lifestyle not only contradicts what God said about homosexuality, but it’s downright blasphemous! I want to respond, but how do I reply in a benevolent manner where I can show and correct him without sounding malicious or condescending? After all, we are to love the sinner and hate the sin. Thank you."

Here is Pat's rambling answer:
You get condescending and you say, “Look, he’s wrong.” That’s how you start. You can’t have people misinterpret the Bible. The Bible... The Bible… First of all, the government… The Supreme Court has issued a ruling. That ruling… I tell you what. In the legal system, Party A says Party B over marriage, “I want to get married to them.” And the court says “Okay. You can get married.” That doesn’t mean that I’m going to get married to a homosexual. It doesn’t mean that you have to. Nor does it mean that it’s the law of the land. Congress didn’t pass any law. Your state legislature didn’t pass any law. So you’re not under anything. It’s a decision of the Court over a couple of people. They would like to make it bigger than that, but in terms of the Constitution it isn’t.
I love that Pat tells Sherri to go ahead and be condescending towards the letter-writer who supports marriage equality. I'm not sure, however, that Pat's rambling response really provided much of an informative response.

But I find it interesting that a court decision that only cover a "couple of people" warrants this much airtime on "The 700 Club!"

You can listen to the whole segment here. There's an interesting question early on where another letter-writer complains (and gets support from both Pat and Wendy) about getting proselytized by a pair of Jehovah's Witnesses. In other words, it's okay for them to push their beliefs on others. But keep away others who might want to share their own religious truths!

It's Official. "Archie: Riverdale Rescue" Will Disappear on 10/31/15!!

I shared last week that "Riverdale Rescue" will be ending on October 30th. I've since written an additional post about the late addition of buy-in character Clay Walker.

I decided to write up one additional post after discovering a closet-full of additional outfits that are currently for sale.

First, there are three sets of Halloween-themed skins:

There's a skin in case you want to send the Archies out on concert:

Then there are some outfits for taking an outdoor hike:

If you are in the mood for a dancy Prom Party, you can get this set of skins:

Lastly, there's is a great Independence Day-themed set of skins:

You can purchase some of these outfits with the money that you collect around Riverdale. The rest of these outfits you need to purchase sodas with real money. Personally, I would avoid spending your cash on any new sodas. (More on that below!!)

There is also one last item that you can purchase using money that you collect every day from Rivderale. It's a slot machine that dates back to when Runty was first introduced to "Riverdale Rescue." Personally, I wouldn't waste your time getting this item. It doesn't do anything unless you never purchased it in the past. Frankly, I'm not even sure why it's available for sale right now.

Lastly, it was my assumption that "Archie: Riverdale Rescue" would continue after its official end on October 30th. My assumption was that you could continue playing the game, except that it would no longer have any new quests, access to the Archie Store, or access to Tech Support.

I was wrong.

A friend directed me to this FAQ, where the following questions about the future of "Riverdale Rescue" were asked and answered:
Will I still be able to play Archie: Riverdale Rescue after it is discontinued?
Unfortunately, no, but make the most of the remaining two weeks with Archie and the gang! All in-game content from the past two years will be available in the store as of October 15th. Soda is for sale at a tremendous discount – $9.99 for 100,000 soda – in a promo available to iOS and Android players! Play through all remaining quests, comics, and max out your Riverdale rating!

It’s October 31st and my Archie: Riverdale Rescue game still runs. Why is this?
October 31st is the planned end date for Archie: Riverdale Rescue; however, the precise dates of removal may vary slightly platform by platform. Each platform has its own requirements and timelines associated with app removal. We are doing our best for all players to have a consistent experience, regardless of platform. After October 31st, if the app is still live, expect instability and discontinuation.
In other words, it's official. There will be no "Riverdale Rescue" next week. Not even a ghost town. Which is sad, but it's probably for the best.

Goodbye, "Riverdale Rescue." I have enjoyed my time with you. But it's time to let go.

Grimes, IA: Owners of Anti-Gay Gortz Haus Gallery Sold Building to Harvest Bible Fellowship

I wrote back in June that the Gortz Haus Gallery over in Grimes, IA, was going to be closing. This was a business that got in trouble with the Iowa Civil Right Commission after someone filed a discrimination complaint on the basis of sexual orientation. The case dragged on for a while and eventually the case was settled last year. The Gortz Haus' owners paid $5,000 to the couple that they had discriminated against and they agreed to stop discriminating against customers on the basis of sexual orientation. Which they did in January 2015 by ceasing all wedding ceremonies. But the business struggled without the wedding income, so they closed.

The business' owners, Dick and Betty Odgaard, had previously announced that they were in the process of selling the property to a church community. They just announced that the sale went through and now the property belongs to an evangelical, nondenominational church called Harvest Bible Fellowship:
Pastor Ryan Jorgenson said the transient church, which has grown to about 170 members since opening two years ago, wanted to find a permanent home, rather than the temporary event space it has been using. He said the building's history couldn't be ignored. But the baggage wasn't necessarily seen as a detriment.

"We fully support the stand that the Odgaards have made with their building and with their business," Jorgenson said. "But our biggest thing by far is we want to be known as a church that loves Jesus. We preach and teach the Bible fully. We want to be a blessing to our community."
In other words, the church opposes gay families.

They can use the property for weddings and discriminate against same-sex couples now if they want. But that's okay, because they are a church and not a commercial business.

By the way, the Odgaard family might not be able to sustain a business, but they can afford multiple billboard campaigns preaching against gay families. They have two billboards up in Oklahoma and in Arizona (but not Iowa) and will soon have a third billboard up in North Carolina. They hope to erect 1000 billboards advocating against gay families.
