Kim Davis Sentenced to Jail for Defying Court Order and Refusing to Do Her Job

I've spent pretty much most of my waking hours since 4:30 AM on the road. In other words, my brain is fried. One story was all over the radio news today: Roman County Clerk Kim Davis was found guilty of contempt in federal court and sent to jail. This comes following a series of court orders that she resume providing marriage licenses to the people of her community.

Davis stopped issuing marriage licenses following this summer's Supreme Court decision in favor of gay marriage. She said that issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples would violate her religious liberties.

She's fortunate that a Catholic clerk did not assert his or her religious liberties when she applied for her fourth marriage license.

A group of couples who live in Rowan County, KY, filed a lawsuit against Davis. They were represented by the local ACLU office, who specifically asked the court to impose fines against Davis -- not jail time. The judge decided that fines would not be enough to convince Davis to do her job. That's why she was sentenced to jail.

Davis had the opportunity to get out of jail today. The judge introduced a compromise. Her deputy clerks could issue marriage licenses. Five out of six of her deputies are willing to do this. But Davis will not permit this to happen.

So she sits in jail.

Will the Lodge Family Replace Workers with Robots? Find Out in BETTY & VERONICA COMICS ANNUAL #236!

It's interesting to read the different stories coming out of Archie Comics sometimes -- and how contradictory that they can sometimes be with each other. A month ago, Archie Comics published JUGHEAD & ARCHIE JUMBO COMICS DIGEST #15, which had Archie give up on one birthday present idea for Veronica. It was a robotic servant from Mars. Archie quickly nixed this idea. After all, he didn't want to put Smithers out of a job by giving Veronica a robotic replacement! This offered me newfound respect for our resident red-head!

Then this week, Archie Comics published BETTY AND VERONICA COMICS ANNUAL #236. It features a never-before-seen lead story that addresses this very issue!

Here is the main difference between Archie and Mr. Lodge: Archie worries about Riverdale's workers. Mr. Lodge sees them as commodities who should be replaced by robotic competitors!

This lead story reveals that the Lodge family will be hosting "Personal Robots" at their home for the next month. During that month, the family will get to figure out numerous ways that Riverdale can benefit from mechanized scabs!

Here is the sad part: Betty -- Riverdale's "girl next door" -- is all over this new scheme. She points out all of the ways that Veronica and her family will benefit from mechanical staff: They can do their laundry. They can walk the dogs. They can prepare food for parties and do most of the decoration. Where will it stop?

Being the heartless industrialist that he is, Mr. Lodge ends up using the Personal Robot to attack and assault Archie. I'm shaking my head with sadness...

Granted, Archie isn't Betty. But I lost a little respect for Betty once she put her stamp of approval on this effort to help the Lodge family lay off all of their staff!

"Nice Advice" was written by George Gladir, penciled by Bill Galvan, inked by Bob Smith, lettered by Jack Morelli, and colored by Digikore Studios. Keep in mind that Gladir died nearly 1.5 years ago. So while it's nice that Archie Comics obviously has a backlog of old George Gladir scripts lying around, it would be nice if they contracted with some living writers!

New Punisher Coming to Marvel Comics??

$

Marvel Comics has been messing around with its iconic characters in recent years, giving us a black Captain America (FKA Falcon), a female Thor (AKA Jane Foster), a new female Wolverine (AKA X-23), and a new Asian Hulk (AKA Amadeus Cho). Now it looks like the Punisher (AKA Frank Castle) might go through some changes soon.

Back in the early 90s, there were a series of replacement Punishers. This particular Punisher is a black Brit named Outlaw (AKA Nigel Higgins). He's been around off and on, but he's not particularly well known.

Except that Outlaw will be appearing in Marvel Comics' upcoming CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS series, which debuts next month. Nothing specific has been said about Higgins taking over as Punisher. Except that the idea has been floating around in more than one online comic book website, which implies that it's going to happen.

So... will Marvel Comics be replacing Frank Castle with a black Punisher? That's the money bet, if you believe the rumors...

Kim Davis: More Persecuted Than Rose Parks??

It's possible that Kim Davis issued a statement from jail. Here's what Davis had to say last night (misspellings are intentional!):
To My brothers and sisters in Christ,

As I sit here in my cell, I am reminded of God's words to Isaiah 41:10 "fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with my righteous hand."

God's strength, fueled by the love, support and PRAYERS I have recieved are truly getting me by.

It's true what they say. If God brings you to it, God brings you through it!!!

I have no doubt your opinion of me has been swayed by the liberal media gotchyas. I am here because there is a war of Christians in America. This country was founded on the belifes of Christianity!! This is a fact.

I sit here with my Bible close to my heart, comuning with the Lord. I have a lot of time to think. I think of what Rose Parks must have felt! She had it easy let me tell you. The whole WORLD is watching me. Under this microscope, I am now not only an example for my famiy, but for the millions on Christians in America facing persecution and the loss of their fundemental right of regligious FREEDOM!!! I know now that I have been chosen for the highest purpose.

This is all a trial from God above. And I ask that you read this passage from Luke 16:18 and think of me, "consider it all joy my bretheren when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

I thank the courageous men Ted Cruz and Huckabee for their unwelding support through these trying days. They understand the Christian way.

As Jesus told His deciples before His death, think of my fondly. Think of me and pray.

Kim Davis
It's funny to think of Kim Davis imagining herself as having it more difficult that Rose Parks -- whomever she is!! Certainly, Davis has had it easy compared to Rosa Parks. After all, Davis has free legal services and will eventually cash in with some sort of Christian crowdfunding program.

But it's particularly fun to read the passage from Luke 16:18 and think of Kim Davis: "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and whoever marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery."

Which pretty much confirms that this was a fake letter, but a deliciously fake letter!

Kim Davis and Her Religious Liberties Are Not Under Attack by the Government

I've been spending too much time tweeting about Kim Davis recently. She's the county clerk from Rowan County, KY, who just won the election that placed her in this position. She was not happy with the recent SCOTUS decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. She quit processing marriage licenses for anyone and will not allow her deputies to complete that job functions. She argues that her signature is on the form, which means that she is giving her explicit endorsement of every marriage that gets happens in Rowan County.

Several couples (same-sex AND opposite-sex) were not happy that they were being told to go elsewhere to process their marriage licenses. One couple in particular was turned away three times. Davis was told by three separate federal courts that she needed to do her job. SCOTUS unanimously told her to do her job. She has refused and was ultimately held in contempt of court and placed in jail.

Keep in mind that Davis is receiving free legal representation. She is also being bolstered financially by outside supporters. Plus she made an oath to do her job less than a year ago. That is why she is in jail. The judge decided that nothing short of jail would make an impression on Davis.

Keep in mind that five of Rowan County's six deputy clerks are willing to handle marriage license applications. Davis was offered that as a compromise alternative to jail. She refused. That is also why she is in jail.

I had some thoughts about "religious liberty" this morning. Why is it that religious liberty arguments are rarely used against divorcees or adulterers, or serial spouses, or those of other faiths, or those of no faith? "Religious liberty" arguments are generally used to justify discrimination about LGBT people -- with the occasional exception of women who use birth control.

Nobody is ever concerned about the religious liberty of gay people. Over 40 years ago, leaders from the Metropolitan Community Church sought marriage rights on the basis of religious liberty. They were laughed out of court and nobody came to their defense.

I was married in my church nearly 20 years ago. My church fully recognized and affirmed my marriage and treated it as spiritually honored. And yet the state of Iowa refused to recognize or honor our collective religious liberty for over a decade.

Heck, the very notion of LGBT people having legitimate religious liberties is routinely scoffed at.

Here's the thing. Kim Davis has been a deputy clerk for years and years and years. She -- like most of us -- was fully aware that the various DOMA laws and the various constitutional amendments restricting marriage from same-sex couples were falling down like dominos. She knew that the SCOTUS was hearing the Obergefell v. Hodges case and that they were likely going to rule in favor of America's gay families -- based on precedents like those earlier court cases and the 2014 United States v. Windsor SCOTUS decision.

My point is that Kim Davis wasn't drafted into her position of county clerk of Rowan County. She voluntarily ran for a position where she would be required -- at least potentially -- to process marriage licenses for same-sex couples. If she didn't want to risk completing this function, she could have sought other employment. She could have not ran for election.

She was not -- as has been asserted to me -- running for a job that is accountable to God. After all, you do not need to be ordained in order to become a county clerk. You need to be able to receive and process state and county documents and you need to know how to supervise employees.

The taxpayers of Rowan County did not elect her to her current position in order for Kim Davis to tell them to go to another county for them to complete basic government transactions that they should be able to complete within their home county. Kim Davis really needs to do her job, delegate her job duties, or quit.

But stop telling me that her religious liberties are being trampled over by an unjust government. Kim Davis IS the government. And she's trying to force the citizens of her community to abide by her personal belief system. That is not religious liberty.

"Survivors" 40th Anniversary: Episode 20 ("A Friend In Need")

This is the twentieth in a series of blog posts dedicated to the 40th anniversary of BBC's "Survivors" television series. "Survivors"followed a core group of characters who managed to survived a devastating viral outbreak -- one which managed to kill off somewhere between 95-99% of humanity. Society has crumbled and now those who remain must relearn the old way if they have any hope of surviving much longer.

Today's episode was titled "A Friend In Need."  It starts out with a pretty stark scene. A young woman is gathering eggs from a hen house. Meanwhile, a sniper is setting up his gun from a nearby hedge. The scene ends with the girl in his site and him pulling the trigger.

We then cut away to Whitecross. Charles and Greg have called together representatives from neighboring communities. It seems that Whitecross is trying to replicate what the Grange started at the end of season one. They are trying to create a federation of communities, who could share defense, commerce, communication, and possibly population resettling from time to time (to limit inbreeding!!).

This gathering isn't going terribly well. Nobody really trusts each other and most of the visiting ambassadors think that this is a waste of time. They are especially distrustful by Whitecross' efforts to get everyone to reveal their weapon stores to each other.

The meeting is abruptly interrupted by a visitor who reveals that the wife of one of the ambassadors was shot by an unknown assailant. Charles and Greg return to that community and go all CSI on us. Within ten minutes, we discover that the assassin is a crippled man with small feet and a high-power gun who only kills young women from a distance in remote areas of settlements towards the end of the day. We also learn that ten settlements have been attacked this way in the recent past.

CSI: Whitecross!
The folks at Whitecross soon suspect that the mysterious sniper is hiding out in their woods. They set up new rules that restrict the women's movement and allow for the men to keep a watch out for the sniper.

Eventually, Arthur comes up with the idea of a Judas Goat. Basically, they need to use one of the women to flush out the sniper -- or at least let us know for certain that he's in the area. Jenny volunteers and the gunman takes the bait. Fortunately, the men are around to prevent any lasting harm to Jenny!

Now that the Whitecross survivors have confirmed that the killer is near their settlement, they reach out to the other settlements for assistance. Most of the groups decline to help -- but one group steps up, which is a promising start to our newbie alliance of settlements!

Everybody gathers and begins flushing out the sniper with a line of people. This works out well -- except that the sniper runs through an area with a fox, which causes everyone to break formation for reasons that weren't apparent to me.

Even though they don't capture the killer, our group manages to find his camp. They also discover that -- despite the fact that he's an accomplished sniper with a high-power rifle -- has gone native and likes to eat raw food! Greg decides that they will keep near the pond. He figures that the killer will need to go there to drink eventually.

He's correct with that assumption. However, Charles ends up accidentally alerting the killer to their presence and a gunfight ensues.

Unfortunately, Greg had let John and Lizzie play with his rifle the other day. John knocked out the firing pin and didn't tell anyone about it! As a result, Greg's not able to make his killing shot. Instead, he pulls a snare from his pocket and strangles the gunman from behind!

The sniper is dispatched. It is then that we discover that "he" is a she and her name is George Oliver. Or something like that...

Yeah, this end line was pretty odd. After being terrorized for a week by a masked sniper, John wants to know why she had to die. Nobody seemed to have any answers. Maybe they were confused that the killer was a woman. We certainly never learned her motive.

Anyway, there were some other interesting bits. Jenny planted the seed midway through the episode that the gunman was Vic. You remember him? He was the man from Season One, who was confined to a wheelchair after getting his legs crushed from a tractor. Jenny was convinced that Vic survived the fire that destroyed the Grange and that he managed to relearn how to walk.

It's an interesting red herring -- and one that could have been cool if it had materialized. But I kind of like that it was somebody random instead.

We learned in this episode that Greg and Abby must have finally come clean about Barney's kangaroo court and execution. They mentioned Barney's trial and there was a desire to avoid similar situation.

Also, Charles noted that he hasn't killed anyone like Greg has. He wondered how it might change him. He must have forgotten about all of the mercy killings that he and Abby committed back in Season One!

Lastly, we were introduced to a new survivor in this episode: Daniella (played by Gigi Gatti)! She was found out in the wood by the men. She gratefully joined the group. She's Italian and recently lost her only companion to death. She also doesn't speak English very well. She really didn't do much in this episode except arrive. But she will appear at Whitecross at least two more times this season.

Daniella
We return next weekend with another episode: "By Bread Alone!"

Happy Labor Day!

Five Reasons to Enjoy JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS #6!

I wrote last month about JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS #5 and a Misfit-inspired action that nearly killed Jem -- and seriously injured Aja! Aja ended up recovering and the Holograms arrived to compete in the "Misfits VS!" battle of the bands -- only to realized that their roadie was the person who'd sabotaged their set and nearly slaughtered everyone! This led to a public confrontation between the two bands -- and a food fight!

JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS #6 was published this week and we were immediately treated to the aftermath of that battle -- and things didn't turn out well for our heroes!

Here are five reasons to enjoy JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS #6:

1. Jem and the Holograms Learn There Are Consequences for Our Actions: I mentioned before that the Holograms got into a hue public food fight with the Misfit at the end of Issue #5. Page One of Issues #6 reveals their punishment: They've been kicked out the contest! No Ifs. No Ands. No Buts. And certainly, no appeals! It might have felt good in the moment to smash candied apples into Roxy's face, but that god feeling can only translate into bad PR!

2. The Misfits Are Generally Exempt from Consequences: If we learned anything from three seasons of "Jem and the Holograms," it's that the Misfits can shoot a baby on camera in broad daylight and always get away with it! This is why it's good to avoid public grudge matches with them!

3. Synergy Doesn't Limit Her Holographic Glimmer Only to Jem: In the cartoon, Synergy -- the holographic super-computer -- generally limited her holograms to Jerrica Benton. In the comic book, Synergy is much more active. Not only does she magically transform Jerrica into Jem, but she gives holographic boosts to the rest of the Holograms's clothes and hair. It's a nice touch -- and an effort to limit Jem's potential to become a complete diva!

4. The Misfits and Their Guitar-Themed Motorcycles: One of the more striking images from the first "Jem and the Holograms" storyline was the scene that introduce Jerrica (and the viewers) to the Misfits. They drove into Eric Raymond's business office driving these guitar-themed motorcycles. They were completely over-the-top -- which is why I loved them. Sadly, they rarely appeared after that.

But they're back in JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS #6! Outrageous!!

5. Jem & the Holograms Have the Best Light Shows!: The Holograms were unable to overturn their dismissal from the "Misfits VS!" contest, so they created their own impromptu concert. It was great karma -- completely disrupting the Misfits' own performance. Part of the Holograms' attraction is Synergy's active light-show. I always wondered why they didn't take more advantage of her holographic abilities during the cartoon. This Synergy is ever-present. She creates all sorts of holographic displays -- which completely bolster the Holograms' performances! Spot on!!

JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS continues to be a great comic book series. It pulls everything great from the 1980's cartoon and tweaks everything else into perfection. You are really doing yourself a disservice if you're not reading it!

"Showtime Part Six" is written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Sophie Campbell, story by Thompson & Campbell, colors by M. Victoria Robado, and lettering by Tom B. Long.

Kim Davis Released from Jail

Breaking News: U.S. District Judge David Bunning has released Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis from jailnearly one week since he initially sent her there. She is the county clerk who'd stopped issuing marriage licenses for the taxpayers of her community in order to avoid issuing marriage licenses for same-sex couples. Multiple federal courts had told Davis to resume marriage licenses, but she refused. As a result, a contempt of court hearing was scheduled and she went to jail.

News reports indicate that Davis is being forbidden from interfering with her deputy clerks, who have been issuing marriage licenses in her absence since September 4th. She could be returned to jail if she halts the marriage licenses.

What do you wanna bet that Kim Davis will return to jail by the end of today?

Pat Robertson: Christians Deserve A Better Champion than Kim Davis, But She's What We Got! // Plus: Caitlin Jenner On The Wheaties Box???

CBN's "The 700 Club" led their program today with the continuing saga related to Kim Davis, her refusal to issue marriage licenses to the taxpayers of her county (i.e., her constituents), her contempt of court jail sentence, and her subsequent release from jail. Turns out that Pat Robertson isn't terribly impressed with Kim Davis' Christian creds:
Pat Robertson: This was founded as a Christian nation. There’s no question about it. The Supreme Court – in an 1892 case – said “we are a Christian nation.” That was in the court dictum. We are a Christian nation. And what Huckabee said about the criminalization of Christianity… Can you believe that? A hundred year later? A hundred and fifty or thirty, forty, however years it is later… Christianity, the founding principle of this nation is criminalized. You go to jail if you believe in God and stand fast in your beliefs against the onslaught of secular humanism and the flood that comes along with it.

It’s not a pretty picture, ladies and gentlemen. Kim Davis is not exactly the champion that we would all want to stand up for our beliefs, but nonetheless she did it and she’s the heroine of the piece. But there will be many, many others and the idea that you would have to go to jail… It’s just appalling!
I guess that Pat's holding out for a new hero...

Later, the "The 700 Club" did a segment on some Christian athlete who had some medical complications, but who is currently on the mend with aspirations towards competing in the 2016 Olympics. It was an interesting segment, which Pat Robertson then used to attack Caitlin Jenner:
Pat Robertson: Amazing thing to win the decathlon. You know, the thing... You watch that and who was the hero who won the Olympics? Bruce Jenner! Who's had a sex change operation! And he's now Caitlin! And you just say, "He was on the Wheaties Boxes as our hero!

Wendy Griffith: Even like Mike was saying... Even though he had all this success, he was still unfulfilled.

Pat Robertson: Yeah!

Wendy Griffith: And you wonder with Bruce Jenner if that's why he kept searching for something to feel okay.

Pat Robertson: I can't even get into his head. I don't even have an idea!
To be fair to Pat, I don't have much good to say about Caitlin Jenner or any of her family. But it's just the latest in a string of slights that Pat Robertson's made towards trans women on his program.

You can watch the whole thing here.

Kim Davis Supporters: Deputy Clerks Who Processed Marriage Licenses Should Be Fired!

Kim Davis is out of jail. One of her deputies is on the record for saying that he plans to continue issuing marriage licenses to the taxpayers of that county and we know that a small handful of couples have had marriage license applications processed since Kim Davis went to jail last week.

Now, some of Kim Davis' supporters are urging her to fire any of her deputies who've issued marriage licenses, because of "religious liberty" or something like that:
Supporters of Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, who refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples due to her religious beliefs, said on Wednesday that any of her deputies who provide such documents without her permission should be fired...
Ante Pavkovic, one of the people who helped organize pro-Davis rallies outside the Grayson, Kentucky, detention center where Davis was jailed, lectured the deputy clerks not to violate their oaths of office, like Bunning and the U.S. Supreme Court justices who backed gay marriage did.
"Do not join them in this any further, and if you can't do that, then you should just quit," Pavkovic, 49, of North Carolina, said, standing in the clerk's office in Morehead, Kentucky.
He waved a sign in the faces of the deputy clerks that read, "Fire the cowardly clerks that are lawbreakers." He was asked to leave by a deputy sheriff.
Once again, I anticipate that Kim Davis will end up back in jail on contempt charges. Her lawyers have already indicated that she plans to stop the issuing of marriage licenses. Which violates the terms of her release. She is not willing to do her job. She is not willing to delegate responsibilities to her staff. She is not willing to quit so that somebody else can do the job of county clerk. But her deputy clerks should be fired for doing their jobs. Nice...

Iowa City Man Charged with 5th Degree Theft for Running from Police While Wearing Handcuffs

A 21-year-old man was charged with 5th Degree Theft for "stealing" handcuffs from an Iowa City police officer. I used the quote marks because it seems to me like a shady charge.

Here is the story. A 21-year-old man was drunk this past weekend. He was with a woman. He was drunk. There was an argument. He yelled at her and pushed her. An Iowa City police officer got involved, which led to an attempted incident of resisted arrest.

Here is the rest of the story:
Police took Glascott to the door of the Johnson County Jail when he attempted to run away. He was charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct, both simple misdemeanors; escape of misdemeanant, a serious misdemeanor; and two counts of interference with official acts, one a simple misdemeanor and one an aggravated misdemeanor since it resulted in an injury. Glascott was also charged with fifth degree theft — for taking the officer's handcuffs with him when he tried to run.
"He attempted to steal my handcuffs by escaping custody," ICPD Officer Ashten Hayes wrote in the complaint, describing the handcuffs as "personally owned."
Basically, the guy ran from the cops while he was still handcuffed. So they charged him with theft for having the handcuff on wrists while running away. It's not enough to charge him with disorderly conduct or resisting arrest. They instead charge him with 5th Degree Theft for wearing handcuffs.

And am I really to believe that the police officer "personally owned" that set of handcuffs??

I would completely find this guy "not guilty" of the 5th Degree Theft charges if I was on the jury. Just saying...

Pat Robertson: Get Out of Gay-Friendly Churches!

$
0
0
CBN's "The 700 Club" made a dig against gay-affirming churches yesterday. It happened during the program's Bring It On segment.

Co-host Wendy Griffith shared the following question by a woman named Myrtle: "I have been a member of my church for 47 years. Recently, I have been asked to be an elder. However, my church has accepted to perform same-sex marriages if asked to. Because of my conviction of the Biblical definition of marriage, I would like your opinion of whether I should decline this position before elder training begins in two weeks or leave my church."

Here is Pat's response:
Pat Robertson: The Bible says “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” You can’t agree to that stuff and I think it’s time you walk. You don’t want to be an elder… a leader of a church that believes that way. Their views are contrary to what you believe are the importance of the Bible and you want to find someplace that’s compatible you. That’s all.

So the answer is: Don’t become an elder and get out of there!

Wendy Griffith: That’s right! *Laughs*
Am I the only person who questions Myrtle's situation? I mean, she has been a member of a church for nearly half a century. It's affirming enough that they are open to officiating gay weddings. That implies that they have had LGBT people present -- if not members -- for a while. After all, most churches don't make the leap from non-affirming to hosting gay weddings overnight.

Either way, it's just one more opportunity for Pat Robertson to tell LGBT people that we don't have a place at the Table. It's a good reminder for us to know where we stand with the majority of Christianity.

You can watch the whole clip here.

Oath Keepers Plan to Protect Kim Davis from the Federal Government

Kim Davis hasn't yet returned to work, but plans to return to the Rowan County Clerk office on Monday. She has already indicated that she will forbid her deputies from issuing marriage licenses, which will go against the stipulations of her release from jail. Which means that she will likely be found in contempt of court and sent back to jail.

There is this group called the Oath Keepers. They are an anti-government militia with lots of weapons. They defended the Bundy Ranch against the Bureau of Land Management (and got away without any consequence). They stationed armed guards outside of military recruitment centers after the Chattanooga shooting (even after the military told them to go away). Now the Oath Keepers plan to defend Kim Davis against the federal government:
Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes announced yesterday that he had reached out to Davis’ lawyers at Liberty Counsel to offer the protection of his group, which he says is already forming a presence in Rowan County, Kentucky, where Davis was recently released from jail after prohibiting her office from issuing marriage licenses. Rhodes said in a statement that his position has nothing to do with gay marriage, but rather his conviction that Davis had been illegally detained by the federal judge who held her in contempt for violating multiple court orders.

In a phone call with former Jackson County, Kentucky, Sheriff Denny Peyman and other local Oath Keepers activists, Rhodes said that he was on his way to Kentucky to help with the Davis operation. Although the group had originally intended to picket outside the home of the judge who held Davis in contempt, he said, they had changed their plan when she was released on Tuesday.

Rhodes said that the Rowan County sheriff should have blocked U.S. Marshals from detaining Davis, but since neither the sheriff nor the state’s governor will do their “job” and “intercede” on behalf of Davis, the Oath Keepers will have to do it instead. “As far as we’re concerned, this is not over,” he said, “and this judge needs to be put on notice that his behavior is not going to be accepted and we’ll be there to stop it and intercede ourselves if we have to. If the sheriff, who should be interceding, is not going to do his job and the governor is not going to do the governor’s job of interceding, then we’ll do it.”

Peyman suggested that he meet with the Rowan County sheriff to “educate him” on his responsibility to block the actions of the federal courts, but in the meantime, Rhodes said, “our guys are already there and more coming” and they are ready to “lead by example” by preventing Davis from being arrested again.
We have been told that the Oath Keepers currently have "boots on the ground" in Rowan County.

Liberty Counsel: The Gay Couples Suing Kim Davis Got Married While She Was in Jail, So She Shouldn't Need to Issue Any More Marriage Licenses!

$

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis has been out of jail for a few days. She's expected to return to work on Monday. She was sent to jail due to a contempt of court order for refusing to process marriage licenses in her county, despite numerous court orders and failed appeals. She was let out of jail because her deputies had begun processing marriage licenses while Davis was in jail. She is out of jail now, but has been told to not interfere with the marriage licenses.

Since then, Davis' attorneys have filed a couple court challenges aimed at delaying new licenses. One challenge was immediately batted down last night, after Davis' attorneys filed a motion to have her name and authorization removed by Kentucky's governor from the state's marriage license form. Keep in mind that she filed in federal court instead of state courts, which might have actually had the power to make the accommodations that Davis is seeking.

Davis' attorneys also argued yesterday in court that since all of the couples who had sued Davis for marriage licenses had gotten marriage licenses while she was in jail, she should never have to issue another marriage license again in Rowan County, KY. They argued that U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning had incorrectly included all eligible couples in his earlier court ruling -- not just the couples who were suing Davis for marriage licenses. Davis and her attorneys are now seeking a delay to the order that she issue licenses while this issue is clarified.

"Survivors" 40th Anniversary: Episode 21 ("By Bread Alone")

This is the twenty-first in a series of blog posts dedicated to the 40th anniversary of BBC's "Survivors" television series. "Survivors"followed a core group of characters who managed to survived a devastating viral outbreak -- one which managed to kill off somewhere between 95-99% of humanity. Society has crumbled and now those who remain must relearn the old way if they have any hope of surviving much longer.

Today's episode was titled "By Bread Alone." We were reminded that Whitecross has more than our core group of survivors living and working together. We saw most of the regulars (Greg, Charles, Pet, Jenny, Lizzie, John, Arthur, Hubert, Ruth, Jack, and Daniella), but we also met some new people, such as Lewis and Alan -- plus we saw a few other adults and children.

Not to mention, Phil and Judy. They are a young pair that recently crossed paths with the folks at Whitecross. Judy was feeling sick when they first met her. Which prompted Ruth to actually use the settlement's isolation building! It turns out that Judy just had a bit of food poisoning. This episode began on Day Ten of their isolation journey, which means that our new pair got to come out and meet everyone!

Phil & Judy
It was nice to meet this handsome young couple, but this story is pretty much all about Lewis (played by Roy Herrick). We learn pretty quickly that Lewis is pretty much hopeless in a farm community. He couldn't figure out how to get a cow out of Pet's garden. He struggles to dig a water ditch with another new fellow. Pet correctly observes that he's a square peg in a community filled with round holes!

Lewis Fearns
We quickly learn that Lewis was an Anglican parson before the Death. He had "lost" his dog-collar and kept his former position to himself, but suddenly felt called to come up with an improvised dog-collar on this day after seeing some flowers growing within a pile of rocks.

The people of Whitecross bounce back and forth about whether or not they like having a parson in their midst. Some -- like Daniella and Arthur -- are excited about the prospect of a religious leader to provide spiritual guidance and solace. Others, like Jack and Alan vacillate on whether or not a parson is needed. And then people like Greg and Jenny find the whole idea of faith in this post-Death world to be absurd!

Did I mention Jenny? It seems that she's suffering from Post-Apocalyptic Postpartum Depression! She has been struggling with her responsibilities to the community and her new family, while still grappling with Paul's death back at the beginning of this season. What kind of world did she bring their baby into?

Greg and Charles start noticing a trend within Whitecross. Everyone is starting to slack with her chores in reaction to Lewis' coming out as a faith of the cloth. Daniella created a new outfit for Lewis. Jack stopped work on a plow in order to repair an old prayer desk. Hubert and Alan begged off work on the ditch in order to track down some hymnals (as well as some communal wine -- which they promptly drank!).

Meanwhile, we learn that Lewis continues to struggle with his own faith and his own abilities. He has no problem letting the other know that he's a parson, but he feels useless as a spiritual leader. He's not even sure that he wants to lead Sunday worship services. He probably wouldn't except that most of the people seem to be pushing him towards that.

It all comes to a head when Charles blows up at Lewis and the others for avoiding their assigned chores in favor of their preferred activities. This prompts Phil and Judy to leave Whitecross and Charles to come to a realization: Whitecross needs to lighten up!

In other words, they need to give everyone the ability to find their place and to choose their tasks -- even if other tasks get delayed a bit. It delay tasks like a broken plow or an undug ditch, but at least they will have something to place Lewis' Bible on come Sunday morning! Which is snarky, I'll admit. But I get what Charles is saying. Whitecross needs to work on more than just survival. The people also need to work on personal enrichment.

Lewis ends up having a heart-to-heart discussion with Jenny about his own struggles. He admits that he joined the church because he felt inadequate. He figured that he could muddle through his religious roles and ultimately sort things out in the afterlife. He struggles with the notion that so many other religious leaders -- those with stronger faith than him -- died and left him to lead those who survived. She helped him realize that the others needed him and vice versa. And, in the process, was able to work through some of her own depression.

The episode ended with Lewis leading the community -- including one lamb (!!) -- with Sunday worship.

Compared to most previous episodes, "By Bread Alone" was quite sleepy. No murders. No illness. No major tragedies. Just discussions of faith and leadership. Which is actually quite important -- but fortunately not the focus of every episode.

I mentioned Alan (played by Stephen Tate) earlier in this post. He's a young man who will be seen in subsequent episodes. He's a little dull-witted, but he's got strong opinions and he's easy on the eyes.

Alan
Greg also began work on a pilot project of his. He's attempting to produce methane gas for the community to use. It's just the beginning stage of this project, but it too will become a major plot-point in a few weeks.

We return next week with a bit more action in "The Chosen."

Kim Davis: I Will NOT Authorize Any Marriage Licenses

Kim Davis held a press conference this morning refusing to authorize any marriage licenses in Rowan County, KY. She said that she has been trying to get Kentucky's governor and legislature to remove her name and title from the marriage license forms for months, but they will not do this. As a result, she has come up with her own compromise:
Effective immediately, and until an access is provided by those with authority to provide it, any license issued by my office will not issued or authorized by my me. I want the whole world to know, no mistake about it, that my deputy clerks do not have the authority to issue a license whatsoever. If any of them feels that they must issue an unauthorized license to avoid being thrown in jail, I understand their tough choice and I will take no action against them. However,…Any unauthorized license that they will issue will not have my name, my title, or my authority on it, Instead, they will say that they are issued pursuant to a federal court order.
She went on to beg Kentucky's governor, legislature, and court system to intervene and provide her with an official form of compromise.
