"Jem and the Holograms" Movie Trailer

Remember how excited I was last year about the announced "Jem and the Holograms" movie? I'm a little less excited now after watching watching the official trailer.

No Misfits. No Synergy. No holograms. Jerrica Benton wearing a pink wig. Hmmm... It almost feels like "Hannah Montana and the Holograms."

I shouldn't be so negative. I just feel like they took the magic from the original character and cartoon.

Female Thor's Secret Identity Revealed!

Late last year, Marvel Comics relaunched Thor as a female Goddess of Thunder after the original Thor became unworthy to wield Mjolnir. Up until now, her secret identity has been a tightly-held secret. But readers learned earlier today in THOR #8 that the new Thor's secret identity is Dr. Jane Foster... and apparently her superheroic adventures are killing her!:
The story reveals the new heroine to be Dr. Jane Foster, a former girlfriend of the hero who has been battling breast cancer.

“Jane Foster has been part of the Thor comics and the Thor mythology from almost the very beginning,” Mr. Aaron said. “The very act of picking up this hammer, of becoming Thor, is killing her. Where we go from here is the real story.”
It seems that her cancer doesn't affect her when she is transformed into Thor, but it comes back stronger than ever when she transforms back into Jane.

But it appears that she is willing to make that sacrifice for the greater good.

Think You Know Everything About Squirrel Girl? Find Out Her Many Tails in UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #5!

Did you read THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #5, which was published last week? It features a group of people -- including Squirrel Girl's new BFF Nancy Whitehead -- who are stuck in the Statue of Liberty's head while a group of superheroes battle a bunch of robotic dinosaurs. Everyone is gushing around Iron Man or the new Thor, but Nancy is best friends with one of America's greatest unsung heroes and she wants everyone to know about her: Squirrel Girl!

*Cue the crickets...*

This leads to a series of short stories as people reveal their own personal Squirrel Girl stories. For example, an old lady shares a story from her childhood -- from the 1950s -- when Squirrel Girl and Captain America were partners against the growing menace of communism!

Confused? So was Nancy!

What follows is a fascism-fueled farce against an obviously brainwashed Cap by a beguiling young vixen known as Bass Lass! It came down to Squirrel Girl to diagnose the nature behind Captain America's odd behavior and save the day!

This was followed by another Squirrel Girl recollection, which revealed her rivalry with the All-American Red Squirrel -- AKA Squirrel Girl's clone!

And then there was the revelation by one guy that Squirrel Girl is a time-traveling super-agent who uses her future knowledge to remain unbeatable!

These silly tales continue for the rest of the story until the dinosaurs are eventually defeated and the civilians are all freed by Squirrel Girl (and Spider-Man and the Avengers, etc.).

Seriously folks, you really need to be reading this comic book. It's humorous and clever and action-paced. It's everything that you should want in a comic book!

Archie Comics Cancels #NewRiverdale Kickstarter Campaign Following Negative Attention

Archie Comics announced earlier today that their $350,000 Kickstarter campaign, which was to seed six issues of three new titles (BETTY & VERONICA, JUGHEAD, and LIFE WITH KEVIN), has been canceled.

Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater announced the cancellation with this email message to contributors:
We launched the “New Riverdale” Kickstarter as a unique and innovative way to celebrate the company’s upcoming 75th anniversary and to bring attention to some new titles that we are extremely excited about—JUGHEAD by Chip Zdarsky, BETTY AND VERONICA by Adam Hughes and LIFE WITH KEVIN by Dan Parent and J. Bone. We decided to dive into crowdfunding as an energetic, interactive and different method to raise money to help expedite the launch of these titles. The chance to engage with you, our fans, directly was really appealing to us, and we’re extremely grateful and honored by the support and pledges we’ve received.

While the response to these new titles has been amazing, the reaction to an established brand like Archie crowdfunding has not been. Though we saw this as an innovative, progressive and “outside-the-box” way to fund the accelerated schedule we wanted to produce these books, it became another conversation, leading us further away from the purpose of this whole campaign: to get these amazing books in the hands of fans faster than we could on our own. While we fully expected our goal to be funded, it was no longer about the books and how amazing they will be. We don’t want that. This is why we’re shutting this Kickstarter down today.

We don’t regret trying something new. It’s what Archie’s been about for the last six years. We will continue to be a fearless, risk-taking and vibrant brand that will do its best to embrace new platforms, technology and ways to interact with you, the fans. As a company, we have always prided ourselves on pushing boundaries and challenging expectations and perceptions.

The wonderful New Riverdale titles we wanted to launch will still come out—albeit not as quickly as we would have hoped had we attained the funding via Kickstarter. We believe in these books and know they’ll find an audience in comic shops, fueled by great stories and amazing creators.

We’d like to thank the great team at Kickstarter for their guidance and feedback and the entire staff at Archie Comics for their endless hours of hard work and dedication to this very special initiative.

And, most importantly, to you, our fans that pledged money to this Kickstarter—we thank you. Not only do we thank you, but we still want to interact directly with you. Your dedication, love of Archie and his friends and endless positivity are examples to all.

We would love to keep in contact with all of the fans who wanted to contribute to our project. If you were one of our Kickstarter backers, please send an e-mail to publicity@archiecomics.com so that we may gather your e-mail addresses and send you all special thank-you gifts as tokens of our indescribable appreciation.

Your support means the world to us.
Goldwater has announced elsewhere that the JUGHEAD series will still be released in the very near future -- now scheduled for October or November 2015. The other two titles are coming soon also, but no release dates have been announced.

TLC to Air "Submissive Wives' Guide to Marriage"

So TLC has a new reality TV show that I won't be watching called "Submissive Wives' Guide to Marriage." It follow two couples -- Tim & Tara Furman and Eddie & Autumn Miles -- as they share to the world how their marriage thrive because the wives submit to their husbands:
Tara reveals the first ten years of her marriage weren’t easy and she begged God to change her husband. But she says God told her SHE needed to change.

Cameras capture mom-of-two Tara, now an experienced “submissive wife,” claiming she and Tim have a joyful marriage because she greets him with snacks and affection when he gets home from work--and she also lets him make the major family decisions.

According to Tara, a wife’s “job description is to help her man, serve her man, submit to her man, and sleep with her man.”
Tara even shared that she would never deprive her husband of sex -- even if she isn't in the mood. Because there is nothing more sexy to a man than having sex with someone who doesn't want to be there.

Of course, there is the third couple on this show -- Mark & Kristin Haywood. Kristin isn't submissive to her husband and has a tendency of lying on the couch instead of doing chores. So their marriage is in trouble and it's up to the submissive wives to teach her how to be a better wife.

Like most of these new TLC programs, Tara has a conservative Christian ministry that she is promoting. It's called Knowing God Ministries. Amongst the Christian lessons that Tara teaches women like Kristin is how "to dress like a 'hoochie mama'." Not surprisingly, Knowing God Ministries -- and Tara -- are anti-gay.

This show will air tomorrow evening on TLC.

AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #8: We've Lived All Our Lives... And We're Never Going to Come Back, Are We?

Archie Comics finally released AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #8 a couple weeks ago. It's a Christmas story that came out just in time for Memorial Day. Delays for this best-selling title have been annoying, but we have been assured that this won't happen anymore. We shall see...

But before we get too far into this blog post...

This blog entry contains spoilers. If you don't want to know about what happens in AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #8, then stop reading now. You have been warned.

Back to the show...

This was an interesting story. It paid homage to "The Shining," as well as "A Christmas Carol." Basically, Riverdale's known survivors: Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, Mr. Lodge, Smithers, Mrs. Andrews, Kevin, Dilton, Nancy, Chuck, Ginger, and Blaze (FKA Cheryl Blossom) have locked themselves away in a spooky old hotel to celebrate Christmas.

Last issue ended with Blaze's confession that she killed her brother Jason with a machete. They had been in an incestuous relationship and she finally snapped. She told the others that he had been attacked by a zombie and she was forced to kill him, but nobody really believes her. They take a vote on whether or not to keep her with the group. The vote was close, but -- with Archie's vote -- Blaze got to stay with the group.

She later shared the nature of her relationship with Jason -- and presumably with her father -- to the other girls. They were understandably shocked, but I think that swayed most of them to take pity on her situation.

As you can see ahead, this hotel is haunted. Archie and Jughead's ghost spend much of this book chatting. We learned that Christmas is a special time of year. It allows the ghosts to have special access to the world of the living. Of course, that sucks for Reggie since he pretty much kicked off a series of events that spawned a hellish worldwide apocalypse. Let's just say that the ghosts of Riverdale keep pestering him...

Am I the only one who thought it would be funny if Reggie had plowed into Hot Dog's ghost with his skateboard. Or am I just an evil jerk?

Mrs. Andrews shared a 75-year-old story with Archie about Riverdale's past. The people are Riverdale were grief-stricken by the number of young men who lost their lives in the War. Agnes Cooper, Franklin Andrews, and Forsythe Jones decided to visit the Witches of Greendale and barter for protection for Riverdale's children.

They bartered three children over the course of three generations in exchange for Riverdale's protection. Eventually, two children died within these families from preceding generations. This generation's sacrifice? Poor Jellybean...

Anyway, there was a big relational development at the end of this story. Archie proposed to Betty at the end of the book. She agreed to the engagement -- but wants to wait until her 18th birthday. Which will be in three months. (In other words, it's already happened since it's currently May...) Of course, Veronica is furious. Which really sucks for Betty since this story arc is called "Betty: R.I.P."

Next issue promises to be a Reggie-centric issue. I don't think he will be killed off -- but I anticipate that he will be directly involved with someone else's gruesome death.

"A Ghost Story" is written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa with artwork by Francesco Francavilla. It's also lettered by Jack Morelli.

Riverdale's Founders Bargained with the Witches for their Protection -- Or Archie's Parents Did?

So I was cleaning up my home-office space after finishing my latest blog on AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #8 when I glanced at the comic book's back cover description. Check this out:

Check out those final two sentences: "As the survivors hunker down in a hotel to wait out a snowstorm, Mary Andrews reveals the darkest chapter of their town's history. Ten years ago, the adults of Riverdale struck a terrible bargain, setting the state for the present-day apocalypse."

Of course, the story itself had the great-grandparents of Archie, Jughead, and Betty make the pact with the Greendale Witches.

I can't help wondering what caused this significant change in story? Obviously, the pact -- as described in that above image -- created a more direct role in Riverdale's fall for Mary Andrews and the other parents.

Either way, it's slopping editing...

The Marin Foundation Going Through Unspecified Organizational Changes

I was on Facebook yesterday and noticed the following message from the Marin Foundation:

I had noticed earlier that both Michael Kimpan and Jason Bilbrey had recently left the Marin Foundation. And Andrew Marin himself has been studying in Scotland for the past couple years and removed from the day-to-day operations of this agency.

The Marin Foundation is a non-profit organization operating within Chicago's Boystown neighborhood. It's goal is to build a bridge between the Christian and the LGBT communities. I began chatting with Andrew Marin several years ago and eventually became friends with him and his wife, though I haven't chatted with them much since they moved overseas.

TMF has always been controversial with both conservative Christians and with members of the LGBT communities for it's firm insistence on remaining neutral when it came to the question of homosexuality and the Church. The group has been more interested in offering a voice to all and helping everyone try to learn from each others' perspective as opposed to stating whether or not homosexuality is sinful or gay marriage is okay. I've supported the group financially over the years and even participated in TMF's "Love Is An Orientation" DVD curriculum.

I'm not sure why both Kimpan and Bilbrey left so close to one another or if it was just a big coincidence. But I'm curious how the Marin Foundation will look as an organization once their reorganization process is completed.

"Survivors" 40th Anniversary: Episode 7 ("Starvation")

This is the seventh in a series of blog posts dedicated to the 40th anniversary of BBC's "Survivors" television series. Survivors followed a core group of characters who managed to survived a devastating viral outbreak -- one which managed to kill off somewhere between 95-99% of humanity. Society has crumbled and now those who remain must relearn the old way if they have any hope of surviving much longer.

Our last episode ended with our group of "survivors" (Abby Grant, Jenny Richards, and Greg Preston; along with children John Milton and Lizzie Willoughby) getting involved in a feudal war between a young earl named Jimmy Garland and a man named Knox who'd taken over Garland's family estate. Abby fell in love with Garland, who opted to remain at Waterhouse with his war instead of joining our band. But this short romance appears to have jolted Abby out of her obsessive search for her missing son, Peter.

Case in point, Abby explains to the children that their group is going to seriously shift gears at the beginning of this episode (titled "Starvation"):

They then pop into their van and take off for parts unknown, but not before John asks Abby if Peter might be one of these new children. Harsh!

Meanwhile, we are introduced to two new people in a country cottage. Two very hungry people. First there is young Wendy (played by Julie Neubert). We learn that she began wandering the countryside after recovering from the Sickness. She is sick of eating nothing but daffodil soup:

Wendy
She ran across an old woman named Emma (played by Hana Maria Pravda). Emma left with her family for the countryside to ride out the Sickness. Unfortunately, her whole family died and left her alone. Now Emma and Wendy live together and look after each other.

Emma Cohen
The problem is that they have nothing to eat. They have already scavenged all of the food from the surrounding cottages and there is nothing in their garden to eat. They have been subsisting in the recent past off daffodil and nettle soup.

Wendy makes the decision to make the long journey to a nearby community, much to Emma's dismay. It's really not safe in the towns due to illness, but Wendy doesn't believe that she has much choice.

While walking through the woods, Wendy meets up with the proverbial wolf: Tom Price. It seems that our wandering vagabond left Wormley under a bit of a cloud. He had just caught a couple fish and offered some to Wendy. For a price. Wendy was sufficiently repulsed by Price's lecherous proposition and managed to take off with his fish at her first opportunity:

Meanwhile, we meet up with a pack of wild dogs. It seems that man's best friends decided that humanity was a losing bet. The pack of dogs initially corner our survivors and later attack Emma.

Fortunately, Abby distracts the dogs with gunfire while Greg and Jenny lure them away with rabbit carcases. This allows Abby time to tend to Emma's injuries and to learn her story, but it also creates of period of prolonged separation for our survivors.

Because Greg and Jenny cannot get back to the cottage. They are stuck without weapons at a small castle (later named the Grange), surrounded by possibly rabid dogs.

The Grange
Back at the cottage, Abby and Emma are discovered by an angry Tom Price. He is angry about his missing fish, but offers to barter some food for the two women -- in exchange for sexual favors from Abby. She manages to trick Tom into his caravan and then, with Wendy's help, locks him into the back of the vehicle.

Back at the Grange, the dogs finally leave. Greg and Jenny decide to settle down in this large building for the evening with the children. The following morning, they discover a building with lots of rooms, as well as some kitchen space that hadn't been converted to use electricity or gas. That's right. They have a wood-burning stove! The property is also surrounded by large stone walls and there is plenty of room for them to begin raising crops and livestock. Could this become their new home?

They discover something else early into their stay at the Grange: a mentally disabled man named Barney (played by John Hallet). He had taken shelter on the property at some point in the recent past after being attacked by the dogs. He had a pretty nasty dog-bite, but it didn't appear to be infected and it helped reduce some of their worries about rabies.

Barney
By the way, if you ever wondered what my boy Leslie is like, watch an episode of "Survivors" and check out the scenes with Barney in them. There are a couple of minor differences, but otherwise there is little difference between the two.

Our two groups eventually reunite and our group of survivors nearly doubles in one episode! They make the decision to establish a collective at the Grange. Not only that, but they discover a flock of sheep. Plus, Emma can really cook! It looks like they might survive this post-apocalyptic world after all!

I really like this episode. I like most of the newcomers, plus the group really needed to settle down sooner than later.

My only complaint centers on their decision to keep Tom Price around. He has been no good since the beginning. He refused to help Jenny early on when she was wandering alone. He deserted the group to Wormley and his men when he first joined up with them. He then left Wormley's HQ -- with a truckload of stolen weapons and food supplies. Plus, he tried coercing sexual favors from both Abby and Wendy in exchange for food.

He's obviously untrustworthy and dangerous. And they know this! But they keep him around. Trust me when I warn you that this will bite the group in their collective asses at some point in the future. With horrible consequences!

We watch "Spoil of War" next week!

Meet Dede & Cosmo in JUGHEAD & ARCHIE COMICS DOUBLE DIGEST #12!

Have you picked up your copy of JUGHEAD & ARCHIE COMICS DOUBLE DIGEST #12 yet? It's filled, of course, with many classic reprints featuring Jughead and Archie.

But it also features an original short story that introduces readers to a brand-new character named Dede! She has taken over Riverdale's local comic book shop.

Did I mention that she is attractive? Well, she is.

Archie spends most of this story trying to impress the girlfriend, but she only has eyes for one Riverdale pal: Jughead!

Of course, Jughead doesn't even notice Dede.

I wonder if this is the first broken love triangles featuring Archie, Jughead, and some girl. I'm sure it's not, but I cannot think of this happening before. It's still humorous to watch.

Meanwhile, we also get introduced to Dede's pet dog, Cosmo. He doesn't like Archie at all. But look at that collar!

I know that they are going to be relaunching Archie and all of the Riverdale regulars, but I really liked Dede. It seems cruel to introduce us to Dede and then yank her away into comic book oblivion 1-2 months later. I would love to see a series of short stories featuring Dede & Cosmo. We could see some romantic misadventures, but we could also see some comical stories set in her comic book shop and at nearby conventions complete with cameo appearances of current Archie Comics/Dark Circle titles.

"Meet Dede" was written by Tania Del Rio, penciled by Fernando Ruiz, inked by Bob Smith, lettered by Jack Morelli, and colored by Digikore Studios.

Video Appears to Show Clinton Motorcade Traveling Through Iowa at Speeds of Up To 95 MPH

The Daily Mail posted a video of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton purportedly at speeds of up to 95 MPH between Mason City and Waterloo, IA. Interestingly, the Iowa Department of Public Safety seems less concerned about the motorcade and more concerned about the person following it and making a video:
A journalist for the tabloid The Daily Mail wrote a story about Clinton’s motorcade that includes video showing a speedometer at 95 mph as the vehicle was catching up to the campaign’s vehicles. However, it’s not clear from the video exactly how fast the vehicles were traveling in the campaign motorcade. The video was reportedly filmed Monday between Mason City and Waterloo.

Iowa Department of Public Safety spokesman Alex Murphy said Tuesday the video creates concern for public safety because the individual taking the video was traveling at a noticeably high rate of speed, far over the posted speed limit, which raises concerns and puts the safety of the motorcade, dignitary and all motorists in jeopardy.
Clinton's campaign spokeswoman denied that Cointon's motorcade was traveling that fast.

Josh Duggar of TLC's "19 Kids & Counting // Family Research Council Leader Was Accused of Molestation in 2005

In Touch Weekly posted an article indicating that Josh Duggar of TLC's "19 Kids and Counting" reality TV show was involved in an "underage sexual abuse probe" back in 2005 when he was 17-years-old:
Josh Duggar of the TLC hit reality show 19 Kids and Counting was named in a police report as the “alleged offender” in an underage sexual abuse probe, In Touch magazine is reporting exclusively.

The charge being pursued while Josh was a minor was sexual assault in the fourth degree, multiple sources who have seen the police report and are familiar with the case told In Touch. According to the report, Josh was brought into the Arkansas State Police by his father, Jim Bob, who said he caught him leaving a young girl’s bedroom and “learned something inappropriate happened,” one source said...

Rumors about Josh have swirled for years, but In Touch’s investigation has uncovered the secret he has been hiding. “I saw and read the report and it clearly stated that Jim Bob brought his son Josh into the Arkansas State Police and spoke to a state trooper about Josh’s involvement in alleged inappropriate touching with a minor,” one source told In Touch.
In Touch Weekly reported that the investigation became complicated when the state trooper involved with this case himself was arrested and convicted on child pornography charges and sentenced to 56 years in prison.

The investigation against Duggar was eventually dropped when the three-year statute of limitations passed.

It is extremely worth noting that Josh Duggar has not been convicted of anything related to these accusations. We also do not know the details surrounding this accusation or anything about the victim. It could easily be a situation involving a teen girl in a consensual exchange -- that his conservative Christian father objected to on moral grounds, causing him to pull a "tough love" move.

Josh Duggar is currently a senior executive with the Family Research Council. Part of his job is traveling the country in a bus and advocating against LGBT rights and families.

Three Degrees of Separation from David Letterman

You probably heard about David Letterman's retirement program last night. I didn't watch the show, but thought I would share my tangential connection to David Letterman.

David Letterman filmed an episode of his daytime talk show in Cresco, IA, back on October 22, 1980. Now, I didn't live in or near Cresco back in 1980. I was still living with my family back in Nebraska. But I eventually moved to a community near Cresco a few years later.

It seems that viewers of Letterman's old daytime talk show had been invited to send essays to the program promoting their communities. The winner of the contest would get to host an episode of the program at their home for one day. Letterman would also air segments of the program in other areas of the community.

Jane Goldsworthy of Cresco, IA, was the winner:
A few weeks later, Letterman, who will end his record-setting run on late night TV Wednesday, hosted an episode of "The David Letterman Show" from Goldsworthy's living room. The show featured Iowan Cloris Leachman as well as local stupid pet tricks and pre-taped packages of Letterman doing man-on-the-street interviews in Cresco.
Not only did Goldsworthy and her family host David Letterman and his production crew. But actress Cloris Leachman was also there for an interview.

As noted above, Letterman hosted a segment of stupid pet tricks outside of the Goldsworthy home. A future friend of mine named Matt appeared on the stupid pet tricks segment with his mother and younger sister. His pet's trick? I'm not really sure, but it ended up being a strip-tease act!

Matt came to the show with a pig named Miss Piggy. Miss Piggy was wearing a wig and a dress. Almost immediately, the pig tore out of her dress and then began urinating on the ground. If you follow the link in the quoted section, you can see a portion of Miss Piggy's act. It's pretty funny stuff!

What fun memories that this family gets to share!

Josh Duggar of "19 Kids & Counting" Confesses to Past Sex Abuse Claims // Resigns from Family Research Council

$

Remember how news broke yesterday that Jim Bob Duggar of TLC's "19 Kids & Counting" had turned his oldest son over to the police following accusations that Josh had been "caught... leaving a young girl's bedroom" and that Jim Bob had "learned something inappropriate happened," but that everything got dropped by investigators because the three-year statute of limitations had passed? And remember how things got so much worse when it was revealed that Josh had actually repeatedly sexually acted out with five different minor girls as far back as 2002 (including more than one of his sisters) and how his family had reported these incidents to their church elders instead of authorities and how the only cop they spoke to was a family friend and how it eventually came down to Oprah Winfrey's staff to report the family to the DHS?

Late this afternoon, Josh Duggar finally spoke out about these accusations and acknowledged that they were true:
Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I hurt others, including my family and close friends... I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation. We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing, and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling. I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life... I would do anything to go back to those teen years and take different actions... I sought forgiveness from those I had wronged and asked Christ to forgive me and come into my life. In my life today, I am so very thankful for God's grace, mercy and redemption.
Josh Duggar has resigned from the Family Research Council. So he won't be traveling around anymore telling people how gay people are threats to children... for a while anyway...

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar issued a joint statement:
Back 12 years ago our family went through one of the most difficult times of our lives... When Josh was a young teenager, he made some very bad mistakes, and we were shocked. We had tried to teach him right from wrong. That dark and difficult time caused us to seek God like never before... Even though we would never choose to go through something so terrible, each one of our family members drew closer to God. We pray that as people watch our lives they see that we are not a perfect family. We have challenges and struggles every day. It is one of the reasons we treasure our faith so much because God's kindness and goodness and forgiveness are extended to us – even though we are so undeserving. We hope somehow the story of our journey – the good times and the difficult times – cause you to see the kindness of God and learn that He can bring you through anything.
Hopefully, this revelation will stop Michelle Duggar from making more robocalls accusing trans women of being "men with past child predator convictions." She dares to make unfounded fear-campaigns about LGBT people when she cannot even protect her own children from... well, her own children.

Meanwhile, TLC has been completely silent about this situation (outside of a Facebook link to this article). Back in October, TLC canceled "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" effective immediately when it was first learned that Mama June Shannon was secretly dating the convicted sex offender who had perped against her oldest daughter. Comparatively, TLC has been airing reruns of "19 Kids & Counting" all evening tonight.

Somehow I don't think this story is going to blow over...

TLC Pulls "19 Kids & Counting" from its Programming Rotation

TLC has been pretty tone-deaf when it comes to dealing with revelations that Josh Duggar of "19 Kids & Counting" molested five underage girls (including more than one of his sisters) and that his parents opted to turn to their church elders instead of the authorities when they first found out about this. Duggar finally stepped down from his leadership position within the Family Research Council last night, but TLC continued to air reruns of "19 Kids & Counting" all evening.

TLC finally directly addressed this controversy by pulling "19 Kids & Counting" from its rotation of programs:
TLC has pulled 19 Kids and Counting from its schedule in the wake of star Josh Duggar's admission that he molested several underage girls 12 years ago, including his sisters.

“Effective immediately, TLC has pulled all episodes of 19 Kids and Counting currently from the air. We are deeply saddened and troubled by this heartbreaking situation, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and victims at this difficult time,” the network said in a statement late Friday.

TLC had refused to comment on the incident Thursday, but the network sparked outrage later that evening when it ran a 19 Kids and Counting marathon. As of early Friday, the show had been scheduled to air on the morning of May 27, but it has since been taken off the schedule.
It doesn't appear that the program has actually been canceled, though that may come eventually.

I've been so busy dealing with family events and writing about the Duggars that I haven't had the opportunity to write anything yet this week about comic books! I will try to shift gears towards that direction over the weekend. Case in point: ARCHIE VS. PREDATOR #2! Featuring Little Archie and the Mask!

It's a cute little story featuring Riverdale USA on a night where the fireworks display got canceled for one reason or another. Then Little Archie discovers a mysterious green mask totem and is able to transform into the mischievous Mask.

Who knows what kind of trouble Little Archie/the Mask would have gotten into if not for Little Sabrina??

So we saw Sabrina meet Hellboy in AVP #1 and Little Archie crossover with the Mask in AVP #2. What kind of crossover do you expect to see in AVP #3??

This is the seventh in a series of blog posts dedicated to the 40th anniversary of BBC's "Survivors" television series. Additionally, the group settled into a small enclosed estate (later named the Grange), where they hope to start up their new settlement.

The question is whether or not they have the collective skills needed to sustain their new community? Case in point, what's the likelihood that Abby and Jenny can plow a field for potatoes using a pony?

Paul Pitman
Fortunately, their fruitless efforts are being monitored by a traveler named Paul (played by Chris Tranchell). He quickly sits down with the larger group and explains that they are going about everything all wrong. They have the wrong type of horse for plowing. They're wasting their time trying to restart this old tractor. They are trying to farm the wrong portion of their community. Plus, they don't know the first thing about seed-potatoes!

Paul is pretty blunt, but everyone quickly warms to the guy and he pretty seamlessly folds into our new community.

While doing their walkabout of the property, Greg suddenly remembers the quarry from his first adventure. He reminds Abby that he had encountered a man and a woman in a quarry. They had been gathering food, seed, and equipment almost immediately after the Sickness. Unfortunately, the man was severely injured in a tractor accident and Greg had been called in to help them out. The woman later told Greg that the man had died (though we viewers know that Anne coldly abandoned Vic to fend for himself) and they both moved on to new adventures.

For whatever reasons, they decided to send Tom Price and Barney off to the quarry to create an inventory of the stockpile.

That night, our group is visited by a caravan. The vehicle is driven by a secretary named Charmian Wentworth (played by Eileen Helsby). She is traveling with her employer, a business tycoon by the name of Arthur Russell (played by Michael Grover). They are seeking shelter for the night, which is granted.

Charmian Wentworth
This new couple is a bit of a rarity for "Survivors." Up until now, everyone who has survived has been unknown to each other. Arthur and Charmian have proved to be the exception. She was his secretary before the Sickness. And she's carting him around after everyone else that they knew had died off.

They explained that they are traveling to an island cottage that Arthur owns. He plans to fish for survival -- well, he probably plans for Charmian to fish for their survival. Either way, our survivors aren't impressed by Arthur's pompous attitude. Money and prestige don't count for much in this new world.

Arthur Russell
The group becomes anxious when Tom and Barney don't return as scheduled. Greg and Paul load up into Arthur's van and travel to the quarry to see what's holding them up. They discover that our missing pair is pinned down by a gang of hidden thugs who shoot at anything that moves!

Greg sneaks around back and discovers that Tom and Barney aren't being shot at by a group of men. There's only one man in that shack: Vic Thatcher! He's armed with his own weapons, plus he's creating the illusion of more men by using ropes to fire other weapons:

Greg confronts Vic and discovers that his legs had healed badly. Vic cannot walk and he's probably still in a lot of pain. Vic had been mostly delirious when they had originally had met, but had assumed that Greg had whisked Anne away. Greg told him that she had told him that Vic was dead and he'd believed her.

Vic can scarcely believe that he had been abandoned by Anne. He is now consumer with thoughts of revenge.

Greg tells the others that they are not going to raid Vic's stockpile, as these items belong to him. Vic tells them to take as much as they like. Greg tells Vic that he's not going to take anything -- unless Vic himself comes to the Grange with them. He promises to find some sort of work to keep him busy.

The Grange continues to grow! Four new residents within two days! Each offers new skills and new perspectives.

I have been meaning to share second-hand stories of what things are like in the cities -- London in particular. It doesn't sound pretty. We keep hearing from others that they should stay away from the cities. It makes sense. There are too many dead bodies lying around, which can only promote new illnesses and infections. We learned from Tom Price back in Episode 3 that the London was surrounded by a wall of unbearable stench. It was bad enough that he ended up leaving before he got too close.

Paul told us in this story that he went to London to find his father. He found his father's apartment (which was empty), but never did find his father. He told of snipers everywhere. They were shooting at anything that moved, in hopes of snagging anything from food to gold teeth to cigarettes.

London definitely seems like the place to avoid in this post-apocalyptic world!

Next week, we will watch Episode #9 ("Law And Order"). It is one of the more powerful episodes of the series -- and one of the most disappointing episodes. It's the one episode that soured the whole show to Husband Mark. I will tell you why next week.
