Court Strikes Down Missouri's Gay Marriage Ban // This Only Applies to St. Louis

In gay marriage news yesterday, a circuit court judge ruled that Missouri's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. No stay was issued, but Missouri's attorney general has appealed this decision to the Missouri Supreme Court. This only applies to St. Louis, MO -- though marriages that are good in St. Louis are also legal anywhere else in Missouri.

I've said it before. I'll say it again. I would be very hesitant if I were a partnered gay person in Missouri to get married until the dust settles on this case!

Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Rules in Favor of Gay Marriage Bans in KY, MI, OH, and TN

The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled favorably towards state constitutional bans on gay marriage in the states of Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee:
When the courts do not let the people resolve new social issues like this one, they perpetuate the idea that the heroes in these change events are judges and lawyers. Better in this instance, we think, to allow change through the customary political processes, in which the people, gay and straight alike, become the heroes of their own stories by meeting each other not as adversaries in a court system but as fellow citizens seeking to resolve a new social issue in a fair-minded way.
This will most likely be appealed. I would imagine that this will eventually be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. I'm rarely happy about these court gambles -- even though they have been working out in our favor for the past couple years.

The Girls Compete for International Travels in BETTY & VERONICA #273

BETTY & VERONICA #273 was published this week. It's the Part Two of the "Farewell Betty & Veronica" storyline, in which our title characters head off on a months-long foreign exchange trip. Last issue was a somber story where the residents of Riverdale show up for this tear-filled going away ceremony. The girls boarded the airplane and flew -- into a multi-part flashback about which girl gets to go away on this international educational trip.

I have been pretty excited about this storyline for months. I want to see the girls' adventures in India, Japan, France, England, and Korea. I want to see the promised story where the two realize that they appear virtually identical to each other and swap identities while overseas. I want to see the new girls in Riverdale who fill the void left by their absence.

And yet, two chapters into this story and they still haven't reached the ocean!!

But I'm getting ahead of myself... Issue #273 starts off in Riverdale. Betty and Veronica are both bored with the predictability of their lives in Riverdale. They're tired of the people. They're tired of the same old conversations. They are sick of the school and their regular haunts. And they're tired of Archie and Reggie always clamoring for their attentions.

So Ms. Grundy and Mr. Weatherbee pull them aside and invite them to apply for the "Fair Exchange" year-long, multi-continent student exchange program. The catch? Only one student from Riverdale can go! Betty and Veronica both want to go on this trip and are forced to compete for the plane-seat.

Applicants are judged and scored on five different criteria: travel experience (because judging well-traveled students over students who normally cannot afford to travel makes seems to make sense), student support (because judging popular students over unpopular students seems fair), teacher recommendations (which I can get behind), a personal essay (that too), and community service (ditto).

Trust me, the competition gets a little heated...

Add into this the introduction of what it means to be a "Veronica" versus a "Betty" and we have a theme!

One of the girl gets picked by the Riverdale School Board on the final page of this issue and the other stands in tears. It's hard to get too worked up, because... Well, because this is a flashback and both girls just boarded their flight last issue!!

The ramp-up to this journey is really taking a long time. I'm pretty sure this is a five-part storyline. I'm hoping that the competition to travel turns out to be a completely separate story. Otherwise, we're not really getting to see much of their journey!

Person Stabbed at the Villisca Axe Murder House

Have you heard of the Villisca Axe Murder House over in Villisca, IA? This is a house where a family of six and two visiting children were axe-murdered sometime during the night of June 9, 1912. Several suspects have been considered over the years, but this tragedy has never been solved. (Follow these links for historical information and a connected podcast).

The Villisca Axe Murder House has a reputation for being one of the more haunted houses in Iowa. I've never been there, but one of my co-workers traveled across state to walk through it a couple years ago. If you want, you can rent the house for the night and check out the spooks -- and lots of paranormal investigation units do this. Pretty much every night.

There usually aren't too many problems with these groups. But everything changed last night at 12:45 AM when the Montgomery County Sheriff's office received a 911 call from the Villisca Axe Murder House.

It seems that Steven Lauren Jr. of Rhinelander, WI, needed to be taken to a nearby hospital due to severe self-inflicted knife wounds. Laursen was in the house as part of a paranormal investigation group.

Police have already indicated that it doesn't appear to be any signs of foul play related to this incident.

Santa Claus Feels Neglected in ARCHIE #661 -- PLUS: The Bettys Reunite!!

Archie Comics has the Christmas spirit -- weeks early!! Actually, they've been excited about Christmas for over a week now, which is fine. ARCHIE #661 is the title's annual Christmas adventure.

Santa Claus seems to be going through seasonal affective disorder in this story or something. It's right before Christmas -- the time of year when most kids cannot stop thinking about Santa. Except that Santa cannot stop thinking about all of the teens who have stopped believing in him! It's enough to make an old man retire!

Jingles the Elf has a plan to bring back Santa's jollies. He's gonna take him to Archie Andrews -- the one teen Jingles knows who still believes in the magic of Christmas -- and have Archie introduce Santa to all of his Christmas-loving friends.

The problem is that none of Archie's friends seem to believe that Santa Claus is real anymore! Veronica is too busy shopping at the mall. Betty is too busy trying organizing a party. Jughead is too busy trying to stuff his face with food. And Reggie... Well, Reggie is too busy being Reggie.

Santa has enough and officially announces his retirement. Now it's up to Archie to pull a reindeer out of his hat and convince Santa that he can't retire!!

I have to admit it. Santa Claus is pretty whiny in this story. Maybe he's been watching too much Fox News and talk about the annual War of Christmas has got him down. But if this is how he gets every year, it's not surprising that kids eventually turn away from him. Fortunately, Christmas has a way to perking folks up, so I'm pretty sure that Santa's bluster about retiring is just that -- bluster!

There was a little bit of hoot-hoot excitement in this issue -- if only for one panel. The Bettys reunited!!!!! Sort of... The Bettys made their debut during the Archies' recent world tour. The band consists of Betty, Sabrina, Ginger, Midge, and Two-Fisted Toni Topaz.

However, I think that the band isn't quite the same these days. Ginger Lopez is conspicuously absent from the team and that drummer looks fairly masculine. My initial reaction was that Midge chose an unflattering t-shirt. However, Midge is over at Pop Tate's with Moose, Reggie, and Ginger hereself while the band plays on. Maybe there was a schism?? That could be a really cool story someday!! Who do you think our mystery Bettys band member is??

Open Letter to the Married Gay Man Whose Husband has been Snubbed by his Brother & Fiancée

$

I was on GCN this weekend and ran across a new discussion thread. A guy named Ian got married to another guy a few months ago. Most of his family was at the wedding -- except for his brother. His brother and his brother's fiancée were invited, but they do not believe in same-sex marriage and decided to stay home instead. Ian's brother still has not met his husband. They assume that eventually they will meet at some hypothetical family event "someday in the future." But really, it's clear that he has no interest in Ian's husband.

In January, Ian's brother and fiancée are getting married. Ian was invited to the wedding. His husband was not. Ian's brother and fiancée believe that the husband's presence will create too much of a distraction for her family and for the rest of the wedding guests. They told Ian that "my husband's presence will cause an issue for people and take the focus off of their marriage and turn it into discussions of Christian ethics and homosexuality."

Anyway, Ian and his husband are hurt by the snub. Ian offered to come to the wedding itself with his husband, but skip the party and reception. Ian's brother does not want the husband there are all.

Ian's noted three options that are available to him and asked for input from other GCNers:
I'm left with some options:
- Do as previously planned - attend the wedding with my husband but skip the reception. This would frustrate my brother, stress out the bride, but show that I'm committed to being at family events and also demonstrate my commitment to being at them with my husband.

- Skip the wedding completely. This would probably placate my brother and his fiancee, but it would mean missing a significant event in my family and could send a message that I've stooped to his level by just not attending a family event when I don't agree with everything.

- Attend the wedding alone. This would allow me to support my brother, show interest in his relationship with his future wife, and be with my family. However, it disrespects my husband because I am attending a family event he is excluded from.
Most people told Ian that they would stay home. I have some other advice.

Personally, I think there is a lot of projecting going on with Ian's brother about how his in-laws and others will perceive his brother amongst this crowd of strangers. I mean, most weddings are pretty passive events for guests who are not part of the wedding party. They come in wearing crazy hats. They sit in the pews. They dab their eyes during the mushy parts. And then they toss rice (or whatever environmentally neutral bits of food that people toss instead these days) and the bride and groom. They don't usually initiate ethical debates about gay people sitting in church buildings.

It's sad that Ian's brother believes that there would be more scandal caused by the husband's presences as opposed to the absence of the groom's own brother. It says something about their fraternal relationship -- as in, they really don't have much of a relationship at all. I mean, he would rather impress his friends and in-laws than worry about how his choices affect his own family.

Personally, if I were Ian, I would go alone to the wedding. Like it or not, Ian's husband was not invited to the wedding. In fact, he was specifically not invited to the wedding. This wasn't a passive snub.

It is their wedding. It is their big day. They get to decide who gets invited and who doesn't. Bringing the husband -- after Ian's brother and future sister-in-law specifically asked him not to come -- will not work out for Ian in the long run. There are days to make a strong stand about Ian's marriage. This wedding is not one of those days.

But here's the rest of my advise. I would attend the wedding alone. But I would leave right away following the ceremony. And I would stay away from the reception.

Additionally, I would not waste a lot of money on wedding gifts for this brother. Like, I would get them a set of $5 measuring cups or something like that. It is an obvious message to the bride and groom without being too in your face -- and the joy of it is that it's still probably more than they gave Ian and his husband for their own wedding!

If Ian really wants to make a statement about the wedding snub, I suggest that he leave a really nice gift from Ian's husband. And I would attach a beautiful card that says something like, "Wish I were there on your special day, Ian's husband." That would give them something to discuss and debate when his brother, his bride and her family are opening wedding presents together!

I also advised Ian that I would leave it up to his brother to figure out eventually that he needs to make things right between the two of them. It can't all be on Ian. Sometimes, a bit of cold shoulder goes a long way towards forcing the other party to try to make amends or for both parties to realize that they get along fine without being in each other's lives.

So that was my advise. What do you all think?

Canada Seeks to Ban Polygamy & Child Brides // Social Conservatives Use Opportunity to Attack Gay Marriage

Religion News Service posted an article Friday about new legislation that is being considered in Canada that would ban polygamy and arranged marriages for underage children:
The “Zero Tolerance for Barbaric Cultural Practices Act,” introduced Wednesday (Nov. 5) by Chris Alexander, minister of citizenship and immigration, would set 16 as the minimum national age for marriage in Canada.

If passed into law, the measure will make it a criminal offense to participate in or officiate at the marriage of an underage child. Removing a child from Canada for the purposes of arranged marriage would also be a crime. In addition, those practicing polygamy would no longer be allowed to immigrate to Canada with any of their spouses. Polygamists already living in Canada would be deported. The government also seeks to prevent honor killings by amending the Criminal Code to eliminate the defense of provocation.
Leave it to social and religious conservatives to use this as an opportunity to attack same-sex marriages and gay families.

For example...
Hey Canada, if you’re going to ban polygamy, please BAN YOUR GAY MARRIAGE MESS as well!! That’s how you clean up “barbaric practices”, baby!!
And...
So polygamy is ‘barbaric’ (where a man is responsible for more than one wife), but gay ‘marriage’ legalizing prostitution is not. One night stands in bars and clubs are not barbaric either ey? LOL yea okay!
As well as...
Of course all the cultural barbarism being unleashed is caused by the insane idea that marriage can be between 2 people of the same sex. Just because some power hungry judges and a corrupt media (again repudiated in the last conservative electoral wave) propagandizes for various insanities doesn’t make those insanities less barbaric.
There were more anti-gay comments following the article.

A Racially-Inclusive Ku Klux Klan??

A Montana man named John Abarr has been involved with the white supremacist movement for most of his life. His belief system has been reforming in recent years, culminating last year with a bridge-building meeting with members of the NAACP. Now he wants to reform the Ku Klux Klan's reputation by transforming it into a inclusive organization:
John Abarr (has) started a new KKK group called the Rocky Mountain Knights. Though he won't say exactly how many members this new KKK group has, the organization will not discriminate against people because of race, religion or sexual orientation. "The KKK is for a strong America," Abarr said. "White supremacy is the old Klan. This is the new Klan..."

Abarr said his chapter of the KKK is a fraternal organization seeking members who want to fight against a "new world order" or a one-world government, which he is afraid the federal government is trying to achieve. Members who join still would be required to wear the robes and hoods and participate in the secret rituals, but Abarr said the Rocky Mountain Knights will be an open and non-discriminatory group.
The linked article indicates that Abarr is busy organizing a 2015 "peace summit" with the NAACP and other religious groups.

Lots of folks are skeptical about this effort to rebuild the KKK into a racially-, religiously-, and sexually-mixed melting pot of anti-government togetherness, including the KKK leadership:
Abarr's latest actions have enraged the United Klans of America, said Bradley Jenkins, imperial wizard for the organization. He agrees with the Montana Human Rights Network that Abarr should not be using the KKK title for his new organization — but for completely different reasons.

"That man's going against everything the bylaws of the constitution of the KKK say," said Jenkins. "He's trying to hide behind the KKK to further his political career."
Would you join the KKK if you knew that it was now open to people of all races, religions, and sexual orientations?

20 Years Ago Today: Pedro Zamora from "The Real World: San Francisco" Died from AIDS

I used to be a huge fan of MTV's "The Real World." During the program's first few years, it was less about picking the most chaotic, chemically-addicted personalities and more about picking young twentysomethings with interesting stories or careers. I mean, there were still chaotic people, but that wasn't the main purpose of the show back then.

The third season was set in San Francisco and featured -- among several other interesting folks -- Pedro Zamora. He was a Cuban-American AIDS activist. During the course of the season, viewers learned about AIDS prevention. We witnessed the decline of his health over the course of the program. We watched his growing romance and commitment ceremony to Sean Sasser.

And then, on 11/11/1994, Pedro Zamora died from AIDS complications hours following the final episode of "The Real World: San Francisco."

I cannot believe that it has been 20 years since he passed away.

Veronica Teaches Her Father a Lesson about Money in BETTY & VERONICA JUMBO COMICS DIGEST #228

I finally got the opportunity to read through my copy of BETTY & VERONICA JUMBO COMICS DIGEST #228 earlier today. This issue featured a new lead story featuring Veronica Lodge.

The concept was pretty fun. Mr. Lodge is fuming. It turns out that Veronica has already blown out her Christmas budget and he has had enough. He decided that she needs to learn a lesson about money and she will learn that lesson working at his mall!

He contacts the mall's manager and tells him to find an appropriate job for his daughter. Which of course goes over like a lead balloon!

What happens next is a series of mall improvement efforts imagined by Veronica and billed to Mr. Lodge! For example...

The food court's make-over is just one of several costly enhancements implemented by Riverdale High's resident rich girl. I think you can figure out where this story is heading...

Credit Cards Are Christmas Cards in BETTY & VERONICA JUMBO COMICS DIGEST #228

I wrote yesterday about a new Christmas story featuring Veronica Lodge in BETTY & VERONICA JUMBO COMICS DIGEST #228. However, Issue #228 is a Jumbo Digest. That means that we readers were treated to a second brand-new Christmas-themed story in this issue!

The second short story in this digest featured both girls as Betty comes to Lodge Manor on Christmas Eve to help Ronnie decorate her Christmas Tree.

This is a great story for highlighting how different Veronica and Betty are when it comes to money. Betty has one credit card that she uses occasionally to purchase gasoline. One the other hand, Veronica keeps hers in a special storage cabinet so that she can enjoy their myriad colors!

Anyway, the pair discover a snag when they discover that Veronica's Christmas decorations are all soggy and moldy. It turns out that a water pipe burst earlier in the year and the decorations were unknown victims of that household flood.

Veronica experiences a moment of panic before being struck by a sudden brainstorm for makeshift decorations! I won't ruin the ending for you, but these new decorations are definitely suited to Veronica and her family!

Iowa City Earns 100 out of 100 on the 2014 Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index!

I wrote last year about Iowa City scoring a 90 out of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index. They looked at 291 cities from across the nation seeking a variety of factors -- including Non-Discrimination Laws, Relationship Recognition, Municipality as an Employer, Municipal Services, Law Enforcement, and Relationship with the LGBT Community -- and established scores for each of these communities.

I learned earlier today that the HRC examined 353 American cities from each of the states and came up with new scores for this year. Iowa City ended up scoring 100 out of 100 for the 2014 HRC Municipal Equality Index. Check this out:

Iowa City earned perfect scores when it came to Non-Discrimination Laws, Relationship Recognition, Municipal Services, and (beginning this year) Law Enforcement. We earned lower scores for Municipality as an Employer and Relationship with the LGBT Community, but made up for these lower scores with bonus points for items such line-items as Inclusive Workplace, Non-Discrimination Ordinance enforcement by Commission/Executive, City providers services to/supports LGBT youth, City provides services to/supports LGBT elderly, City provides services to/ supports people living with HIV/AIDS, and Openly LGBT elected or appointed municipal leaders.

As noted above, we made strides this year with Law Enforcement by adding an LGBT Police Liaison. Unfortunately, we lost points this year under Municipality as Employer by losing something we had last year (City Contractor Equal Benefits Ordinance) and because the HRC added something new that we don't have (Transgender-Inclusive Healthcare Benefits).

Still, 100 is still 100 and that is an improvement over our 2013 score!

In contrast, nearby Cedar Rapids earned a score of 68, Davenport earned an 86, Sioux City earned a 61, and Des Moines earned an 85. These are all dips from last year (except for Sioux City, which wasn't rated in 2013).

By the way, I was interviewed this afternoon by a writer from the Iowa City Press-Citizenabout Iowa City's 2014 Municipal Equality Index rating and provided both my reaction and a recommendation for the city:
Iowa City resident Jon Trouten said he is not surprised Iowa City ranked so high on the index. In the 20 years he has lived here as an openly gay man, Trouten said he hasn’t experienced problems over his sexuality in the workplace, in housing, in social relationships “or even in faith relationships.”

Trouten said a good next step for Iowa City government, however, would be to provide transgender-inclusive healthcare benefits for city employees and to continue to expand communication with the local transgender community.
Unfortunately, there continue to be unique health care access challenges for transgender individuals in this community, though there have been efforts to make improvements.

I also very briefly complimented the city and the county for its efforts through the Visibility Action Team to improve services and advocacy towards local LGBT seniors during the interview, but that didn't make the cut.

Gay Couple Files Complaint Against Minister for Refusing Gay Wedding

A gay couple has filed a formal complaint against Rev. Kelly P. Carpenter of Green Street Church in Winston-Salem, NC, after the Methodist minister declined to officiate at their wedding:
The couple, Kenneth Barner and Scott Chappell, charge Carpenter under the Book of Discipline with “failure to perform the work of ministry.” Their complaint also accuses Carpenter of “gender discrimination” in not officiating at their ceremony. Gender discrimination is also a chargeable offense under church law.

The United Methodist Book of Discipline, the denomination’s book of church law and teachings, also states that all people are of sacred worth but the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching,” It is a chargeable offense under church law for clergy to preside at same-sex unions.

In the complaint, the couple says the denomination’s rules are contradictory.

“God’s grace is available to all and so should the pastoral ministry (be),” the complaint said.

Carpenter said he has followed the church’s prohibition against same-gender weddings because he does not want to jeopardize his work for the church or harm the other ministries of Green Street Church.

However, he is sympathetic to Barner and Chappell.

“If there was a way for me to be a co-signer with the complaint, I think it’s right on the money,” he said. “It really calls out the contradictions in our Book of Discipline, which calls us to be ministry with all people.”
It's worth noting that this complaint was filed within the United Methodist Church court processes and not as part of any municipal nondiscrimination ordinance.

A bishop will listen to the complaint and respond according to The Book of Discipline. My hunch is that this will go nowhere.

Reggie Treats Himself to Trouble in ARCHIE'S FUNHOUSE COMICS DIGEST #10!

ARCHIE'S FUNHOUSE COMICS DIGEST #10 was published last week, but it took my local comic book shop a little longer to track down a copy for me. It was certainly worth the wait, considering that it featured a really great original short story featuring Reggie. In fact, this was one of my favorite recent portrayals of Reggie Mantle in quite some time!

He isn't being evil. He's not trying to pull over-the-top tricks to mess up Archie's day. He's not being this horrible guy who makes you wonder why the Riverdale Gang continues to hang out with him. He just has a selfish scheme in this story and it blows up in his face gloriously.

Christmas is coming and Reggie has figured out the perfect gift -- for himself! He has planned out dates on five consecutive nights with five consecutive girls: Ella Chu, Chloe Mancuso, Imani Lynn, Nadia Petrov, and Veronica Lodge!

He barely knows most of these girls, so he's decided to impress them by purchasing $10 knock-off "Dazzle Me" rings for the first four girls and one authentic $100 "Dazzle Me" ring for Veronica. After all, there is no way that Veronica would be fooled by phony jewelry!

But you know that Reggie's schemes never work out. What do you think is gonna happen when he messes up his online orders? Will all five girls will be treated to expensive rings or will they all find themselves wearing cheap knock-offs? Either way, you know this isn't going to end well for Reggie!

"Not That Gifted" is written by Alex Simmons, penciled by Pat Kennedy, inked by Jim Amash, lettered by Jack Morelli, and colored by Digikore Studios. This is Reggie Mantle at his best. I really hope we get to see more stories like these in the future!

Mama June Does Damage Control // Denies Romantic Relationship with Child Molester // Claims Another Child Molester is Father of 2 of her Daughters

Mama June Shannon from "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" finally started doing actual damage control regarding her recent relationship with Mark McDaniel, the man who was convicted of sexually molesting her oldest daughter Anna "Chickadee" Cardwell back when she was 8-years-old. TMZ began publishing pictures of Shannon and McDaniel lying in a hotel bed together and walking hand-in-hand. And Shannon has been largely silent ever since.

Her first exclusive interview was with ET and she claims that she has only seen McDaniel twice in the recent past:
According to Mama June, she has only seen McDaniel twice since his release, once at a coincidental meeting and the second time at an arranged meeting to give closure to her daughter Pumpkin, 14, who was raised believing McDaniel was her biological father.

"Since two months to almost six years, she knew nobody but him," Shannon explained. "She was starting to resent Anna and she was starting to ask me questions. I can't answer those questions for Pumpkin."

Shannon says that she arranged a second meeting with McDaniel so that Pumpkin could ask him questions in an attempt to get closure and move on.

"I was sitting right there with twelve other people," she told ET. "It was a conversation that she wanted her answers: what happened, why did he leave, you know, if he was her real father. He admitted to her, no. I had already told her that but, you know, she wanted to hear from both sides of the story."
Shannon also revealed that Lauryn "Pumpkin" and Jessica "Chubbs" Thompson share the same biological father. He is Michael Anthony Ford. He, too, is a sex offender who was convicted of sexual exploitation of minors and was actually caught on "To Catch a Predator" back in 2005.

I already knew from another website about Ford's convictions (though not the "To Catch a Predator" angle) and that he was Jessica's father. Shannon says that Pumpkin didn't know about Ford being her father and she didn't want to shake things up by revealing this up until now. But then Pumpkin went years believing that McDaniel was her father and he'd actually harmed one of her sisters so I'm not quite sure I buy that explanation.

Here's the deal. I still don't buy it. Not completely, anyway.

I believe that coincidences happen. But they ran into and became chummy with McDaniel right around the time that she broke up with Mike "Sugar Bear" Thompson. Plus if they were truly just having a group "let clear the air for Pumpkin's sake" meeting with McDaniel, why not explain this to TLC and the public right away before the story grew out of control. I mean, that's not an unreasonable thing to do for your daughter. She would still have her skeptics, but the family already  had haters. Many more people would understand this explanation than not -- except now it seems less like an explanation and more like an alibi. Why wait all this time to share that information?

I'm also concerned about how Anna has had to cut herself and her young daughter off from the family because of this incident and that Shannon has accused her of selling her story at the expense of the larger family. In fact, Lee "Uncle Poodle" Thompson was accused of the same thing. Both Anna and Poodle have denied making any money from interviews. It just seems like projection and blaming by Mama June herself to me.

"Godless" Billboards Appearing Across Iowa

I you live in or near Des Moines, IA, Davenport, IA, or Moline, IL, you have most likely seen a new billboard that reads "Godless? So are we!"

These billboards were purchased by the United Coalition of Reason, a nationwide nonprofit that supports and promotes American atheists and agnostics:
"It is provocative and eye catching, but it's generic," Rory Moe, coordinator for the central Iowa coalition in Des Moines, said of the message. "We're not attacking any religion. The idea is to reach out to like-minded individuals."
The billboards will remain in these three cities through mid-December.

It seems like there were efforts to put up similar billboards in Cedar Falls, Waterloo, and Cedar Rapids, but the company that owns those specific billboards declined the message. Frankly, I'm surprised that they didn't purchase any space in Iowa City.

Mama June & Uncle Poodle Wage War on Facebook!

I'm not sure what prompted it, but June "Mama June" Shannon from "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" went on the attack against Lee "Uncle Poodle" Thompson last night. It was still happening when I was getting ready for bed and I just couldn't pull myself away.

The Examiner was pretty quick about writing about it last night and did a pretty good job of summarizing the main points of contention:
One of the posts is from a fan asking if Sugar Bear has his own Facebook page. Uncle Poodle is responding on his own verified account. He says that yes he does if June didn't make him shut it off. The comment that has everyone talking though is how he said that Mama June actually set up Sugar Bear by making him a Plenty of Fish account. She tried to say that he cheated on her by finding women to date online, but if she made up the account that would make it where that is not true at all.

Next June started posting pictures of phone conversations between herself and her daughter Anna. The worst part about is that she is sharing her phone number for all of the world to see. Mama June and Uncle Poodle are arguing back and forth with each other over how the pictures of June and sexual offender Mark McDaniel even got out in the media. Poodle says he did not sell the photos and that he was not the only one who had these pictures. He also calls June a liar more than once saying she bought Mark a car and even rented him one time.
Despite the drama, I eventually went to sleep and woke up to the following lengthy post by Alan, Uncle Poodle's fiance:

(click on images to make them more easily read)
This whole situation is a train-wreck.

Let's be clear. There are elements and nuances to this story that will never be clearly understood by those of us who aren't members of this family. I understand that Uncle Poodle's account isn't 100% accurate. But I believe his version of events much more than I believe Mama June's version of events. He's been fairly consistent and she's been doing damage control. She complains of photoshopped pics and accuses him of doing interviews for money. He pretty much reacts with anger when the rest of the family scapegoats him for June's behaviors.

Anyway, I know that Uncle Poodle most likely does not read my blog. But if you do, you need to disengage for a while. The family is looking for a scapegoat in this situation. You are the most visible member of the family who isn't one of the kids or the parent of at least one of the kids. You will be scapegoated so that everyone else can move on with each other.

It sucks. But that is what is happening.

You have Alan. You have friends. You have other family members. After Tuesday's appearance on Dr. Phil's show, you need to let go of this mess. You need to ignore their texts. Riverdale has been overwhelmed by new Christmas stories this November and the lead story in JUGHEAD AND ARCHIE COMICS DIGEST #7 is no exception! "Fantasy Time" is an inventory story by the late George Gladir. Unlike his last inventory story, this story was actually a lot of fun.

The Riverdale Gang (Archie, Veronica, Betty, Reggie, Chuck, Nancy, and Pop Tate) have teamed together to purchase Jughead the perfect Christmas gift -- a new hat to replace his old shabby one! However, Jughead is broke. So instead of real presents, he came up with a list of fantasy presents that he would give to each of his friends -- if he had magical genii powers!

For example, Chuck's fantasy present is a robotic third arm that would allow him to work on his cartooning while cuddling with his girlfriend Nancy!

It turns out that Juggy is pretty good at imagining the perfect fantasy presents!

"Fantasy Time" is written by George Gladir, penciled by Pat Kennedy, inked by Bob Smith, lettered by Jack Morelli, and colored by Digikore Studios.

Kansas City Homeless Shelter Will Turn Away Married Gays from Family Shelter

A friend pointed me to a story out of Kansas City, MO, about City Union Mission, a Christian homeless shelter. The Kansas City Star approached the leadership of the mission and asked if a married same-sex couple would be allowed to stay at their family shelter.

Predictably, they said no:
Even if same-sex marriage becomes legal in both Missouri and Kansas — a matter now working its way through the courts — same-sex couples will not be allowed to stay as couples at City Union Mission’s family shelter.

“I knew this day would come, especially when the media would begin asking that question,” Doty said, deeply concerned about what effect the nonprofit’s decision could have on its broad community support and donations. “I truly hope you understand the can of worms this could open.

“…We are a Christian, faith-based organization that really does adhere to biblical standards. Our view is that it (same-sex marriage) is inappropriate. Our intent is not to shelter same-sex couples together.”

Married, same-sex couples who insist on being housed together will be referred to another area organization willing to accommodate them. Such organizations might include the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph and reStart Inc.
This doesn't surprise me. I have one friend who is currently struggling with homelessness in Kansas City, MO, and is sadly connected with the City Union Mission. Additionally, I work with a variety of individuals who have struggled at one point or another with homelessness. One of those folks stayed for a while at the City Union Mission.

The men who seek shelter there are required to sit through lengthy worship services (1-2 hours per service). They struggle with threats of violence and personal property thefts. They struggle with bedbug infestations -- both in the living areas and in the chapel area.

And you get charged nightly by the mission for the privilege of staying at the shelter.

My friend, after witnessing the latest in a string of anti-gay banter amongst some of the residents, sought help with starting up some kind of support group older LGBT homeless individuals. The shelter representative was apologetic about the threatening speech, but could not "condone" any LGBT support groups within the mission.

So it really doesn't surprise me that they wouldn't support married gay families who are homeless.
