Iowa has a unique relationship with the Spike TV reality show Bar Rescue. Only one of our bars has been on the show so far and it ended up being the first and, so far, only bar that Jon Taffer walked away from before actually rescuing it. I'm talking about O'Face Bar in Council Bluffs, IA. You can read my earlier posts on this bar here, here, and here.
I wrote last month that the Council Bluffs City Council voted 3-2 against renewing the bar's liquor license. The three council members who voted against the bar felt that O'Face Bar placed Council Bluffs in a bad light through its appearance on Bar Rescue and that the city was suffering as a result. It probably didn't help that the show highlighted intoxicated staff, abusive employment practices, and sketchy premises. It's arguable that a lot of this was staged for the program, but it certainly didn't help matters!
O'Face's owner has appealed this decision and a hearing date has been scheduled for the afternoon of July 28, 2014.
Bar Rescue Updates posted an update about O'Face Bar that surely cannot help with the July 2014 hearing: O'Face Bar has agreed to a settlement with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division related to an incident stretching back to November 11, 2012. The bar admitted that they "sold, dispensed, or gave an alcoholic beverage or beer to persons who were intoxicated at the time."
As a result of this settlement, O'Face Bar's liquor license will be suspended for seven day from 10/05/14-10/12/14 and they must pay a $1,000 fine to the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division. They can remain open during this timespan, but no booze of any sort can be sold.
