A 19-year-old Iowa City man has been arrested and charged with a simple misdemeanor count of 5th degree theft and an aggravated misdemeanor count of interference with official acts causing bodily injury after he was accused of stealing another man's iPod. How did he get caught? He allegedly (and accidentally) used the stolen iPod to take pictures which then uploaded onto the victims Facebook account:
The owner of the missing iPod contacted police in August stating that photos of Jones had been uploaded to the victim’s Facebook account via the stolen iPod, according to police complaints.According to police, the accused thief acknowledged that those were his pictures, but denied any knowledge of the iPod itself.
Police say the victim had encountered Jones at his place of employment and recognized him. Officers matched the photos with Jones’s driver’s license photo and a witness who knew Jones also identified him in the uploaded photos, according to police.
Jones was arrested Friday at his home on the 1200 block of Pine Street. According to police Jones resisted arrest and officers were unable to restrain Jones’s hands behind his back until after the use of pepper spray. One officer suffered abrasions to their knuckles during the arrest, according to police.
