Same-sex couples began legally marrying in the state of Minnesota last month. We learned this month that roughly
one-third of all marriage licenses issued in Minnesota since August 1st went to gay and lesbian couples!:
Since Minnesota became the 12th U.S. state to legalize gay marriage, at least 1,640 same-sex couples applied to be married. Counties aren't required to report such data to the state, so the AP built a database through calls to all 87 counties...
Statewide, almost 3,600 licenses were issued to opposite-sex couples from Aug. 1 through the final days of the month, when the AP sought the information.
Amongst other things, the AP found 3/4 of the same-sex couples received their licenses from urban Hennepin County and Ramsey County. The AP found that at least 1,433 of marriages were issued to same-sex couples in Minnesota counties where most voters oppose constitutional bans on same-sex marriage. And at least one same-sex couples applied for marriage licenses in 40 separate counties where the majority of voters favor a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.
