I wrote last week about Trek Fest XXIX, which will be held this coming weekend (June 28-29, 2013) in nearby Riverside, IA. Trek Fest is the annual celebration of the official future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk. This year's theme is "I Mudd." I posted the schedule of events for this year's Trek Fest here.
The Press-Citizen reports this morning that Trek Fest will be receiving a little extra attention this year. A student film maker from Pittsburgh, PA, will be in town from June 28-29 and creating a documentary about Trek Fest and Riverside.
This isn't the first time that Riverside has attracted this type of attention. Back in 2005, Spike TV did a reality TV show featuring William Shatner called Invasion Iowa. The premise of the show was that a science fiction movie featuring Shatner and dozens of locals was being filmed in Riverside. Shatner played the diva and the production people played several gags in order to film the bemused reactions of the residents of Riverside. Eventually, the gag was revealed to the people of Riverside and most everyone got the joke.
I'm assuming that this weekend's documentary effort will be more serious that Spike TV's earlier efforts.
