(Originally written on 05/28/20): There's another horrible animal abuse story emerging in Iowa today. Animal Rescue League of Iowa reports that some unknown person in Des Moines set a box full of nine 4-6-week-old kittens on fire. Two of the kittens were badly burned and the other seven escaped with singed fur.
Polk County Animal Control Officers discovered some of the kittens on May 22nd while investigating a fire at a homeless camp near Des Moines. They eventually found the rest of the kitten two days later. The kittens are now being treated at ARL's Miracle Medical Ward.
The two severely burned kittens -- named Geta and Hans -- received surgery earlier today to remove the burned tissue from their bodies. They suffered burns over much of their bodies, including all four paws, their ears, their noses, and their lips. Greta's wounds were the more serious of the two. They may need additional surgeries as they continue to recover.
Des Moines Police are currently investigating this incident.

We’re very sorry to have to tell you that Greta, the most severely burned of the 2 kittens we were treating, passed away this afternoon from her injuries. She had taken a sharp turn over the weekend and sadly her injuries were just too much for her tiny body. Thank you to everyone who donated and was rooting for her. While this is not the outcome we had hoped for, we are comforted that she was loved and cared for deeply in her final days and while we had taken great care in ensuring her pain was well-managed, now she is truly pain-free.The ARL also reports that Hans, the other severely burned kitten, continues experience improved health.
