What I Learned from "The Tiger King and I"

I finally sat down and watched the Tiger King aftershow on Netflix last night. Titled "The Tiger King and I," it was hosted by former Community/The Soup star Joel McHale. He interviewed several of the folks that made Tiger King great in the first place, including Erik Cowie, Jeff & Lauren Lowe, John Reinke, Saff Saffery, Joshua Dial, John Finlay, and Rick Kirkham.

Here's what I learned from watching "The Tiger King and I":

1. Pretty much everyone believes that Joe Exotic deserves to be in prison and will likely die in prison. Saff noted that he could be extremely generous -- thinking particularly of his annual Thanksgiving Day meal --, but they also believe that he was erratic, chaotic, selfish, and cruel to his animals. pretty much everyone believes that Joe wanted Carole Baskin dead. And pretty much everyone found it ironic that he finally achieved the fame that he'd sought for years -- but that he can't watch any of it because he's in prison.

2. Pretty much everyone believes that Carole Baskin killed her husband Don Baskin. And those who were asked felt that her Big Cat Rescue sanctuary wasn't much better that Joe Exotic's zoo.

3. Erick Cowie still works as zoo keeper for Jeff Lowe and he has no sense of love or loyalty to Joe Exotic. He's in it for the animals and he stayed at the zoo in spite of Joe, not because of him.

4. Ex-husband John Finlay now has teeth, and he looks completely different in this production -- possibly also because he's wearing a shirt in this special. He's been clean, sober, and drug-free for roughly five years.

5. In case you didn't know, Saff is a trans man. One of the first things that I was told when I mentioned that I was watching the Tiger King documentary was that he'd been mis-gendered. I think everyone pretty much knows that at this point. Saff himself appears to be the least offended by this. He also appears to be accepted the loss of his hand, stating that he's watched footage of the attack numerous times. Apparently, they used the tiger attack as a training video for what not to do when interacting with the cats with all of their new staff. Saff said that he holds no grudges against the tiger and trusts it more than Joe Exotic himself.

6. I did learn that former campaign manager Joshua Dial himself is gay. I didn't know that until yesterday. He believes that Joe Exotic is guilty and deserves prison time, but seemed to believe that he received as much time as he did because he's an openly gay man in Oklahoma. He was completely traumatized from watching Travis shoot himself in the head and he still hasn't spent time with a therapist to work through what he witnessed.

7. I learned that John Reinke no longer works with exotic animals. He quit the zoo after watching a fist-fight between Jeff Lowe and Joe's current husband Dillon Passage. Plus, he never quite got along with Jeff Lowe so there was nothing keeping him at the zoo anymore.

Speaking of Dillon, I really wish that he would've been included on the aftershow. I do know that Joe and Dillon are still married. And I know from a recent news article that he stands behind his imprisoned spouse.
