I have written more than once about Iowa City's Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index scores (90/100 in 2013, 100/100 in 2014, 100/100 in 2015, and 100/100 in 2016). For whatever reason, I skipped over 2017's score, as well as 2018's score -- but I'm sure we did just fine based off past and current trends. The HRC looked at 506 cities from across the nation exploring a variety of factors -- including Non-Discrimination Laws, Municipality as an Employer, Municipal Services, Law Enforcement, and Leadership on LGBTQ Equality -- and established scores for each of these communities.
As expected, Iowa City's 2019 rating was a perfect score of 100:
Iowa City scored perfect scores in all five categories. We earned additional points when it comes to the bonus headings of "Single-Occupancy All-Gender Facilities,""Protects Youth from Conversion Therapy,""City Employee Domestic Partner Benefits,""Youth Bullying Prevention Policy for City Services,""City Provides Services to LGBTQ Youth,""City Provides Services to LGBTQ Homeless People,""City Provides Services to LGBTQ Elders,""City Provides Services to HIV/AIDS Population,""City Provides Services to the Transgender Community,""Openly LGBTQ Elected or Appointed Municipal Leaders," and "City Tests Limits of Restrictive State Law."
In contrast, nearby Cedar Rapids earned a score of 100, Ames earned a score of 87, Davenport earned a score of 80, Des Moines earned a score of 93, Dubuque earned a score of 100, Sioux City earned a score of 57, Waterloo earned a score of 59, and West Des Moines earned a score of 95.
