Iowa Woman Appeals Animal Neglect Sentence

You might remember the animal welfare case involved Barbara Kavars. He ran a kennel nearby Manly, IA. Last November, 154 Samoyeds and four cats were removed from her overcrowded and filthy kennels. According to media reports at the time, the floors and walls of the kennels and barn where the animals lived were caked in mud, feces, and urine. The kennels lacked food and what water they had was frozen solid. Most of the animals were in bad condition -- emaciated, fur matted with feces, skin ailments, intestinal parasite, and painful wounds. At least one of the dogs had to be euthanized due to its severely poor health. All of the others were surrendered by the kennel's owner, Barbara Kavars. (You can read more about it here.)

Kavars was found guilty of fourteen counts of animal neglect last month. She was sentenced to two years of probation and also received a 420 day suspended jail sentence. She was fined $910 and was required to undergo a mental health evaluation. She was also barred from breeding or owning any dogs.

Earlier this month, Kavars appealed her conviction and/or the severity of her "unreasonably harsh" sentence. Her attorneys indicated in court filing that she was pressured by authorities into surrendering her dogs.

I will share more about this story as it progresses.
