I've lived in Iowa City for over 25 years and just learned that a fragment of the original "true cross" is on display at our very own St. Mary's Church! The fragment is a tiny little piece of wood that they've placed on another cross.
St. Mary's Church authorities have proof of the cross' authenticity directly from the Vatican itself -- somewhere. Apparently, it's hidden away somewhere in the rectory or some such place. It's not clear how the fragment managed to get from Jerusalem to Iowa City. Not even the current priest knows for certain. But it's here.
