Several months ago, I shared that DC had plans to publish a WONDER TWINS series. WONDER TWINS #1 finally got published earlier this week -- and it ended up being a lot of fun!!
WONDER TWINS #1 introduced DC's modern office to the classic cartoon couple from the 1970s. "It Gets Weirder" features writing by Mark Russell, art by Stephen Byrne, and lettering by Dave Sharpe.
We learn that Zan and Jayna have relocated to Earth from their home planet of Exxor by Superman. Exxor is a planet of changelings. They can turn into all manners of animals and elemental energies. It's not entirely clear what happened, but there was some sort of scandal -- either involving the twins themselves or involving their parents. I'm assuming that we'll learn about the scandal eventually.
The Wonder Twins are now enrolled at Morris High School and have part-time afternoon jobs at the Hall of Justice assisting Superman and the world's other heroes.
Like the others of their race, they are shape-changers. Jayna can transform into any animal and Zan can transform into water. Which isn't that impressive. Then again, his high school hockey team appreciated his ability to transform into a ton of ice for their arena!
But WONDER TWINS isn't really about young super heroes striving to make the world a better place. Instead, it's a coming of age comedy where Zan tries to overcome a unique Exxorian puberty trait called the "thunder lust" -- which of course happened in front of all of his human peers. Zan's embarrassment prompts by Batman and Superman to share their own tales of embarrassing (and humorous) tales of being teens.
Did I mention that Jayna came up with a unique way of quickly dispatching Mister Mxyzptlk within three panels?
Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to future issues of WONDER TWINS.
