I haven't written much about the "X-Men Disassembled" story line that's currently unfolding in the new weekly UNCANNY X-MEN comic book series. It's about 10 issues into the book and it's been interesting to watching the X-Men battle Nate Grey (AKA X-Man). But there are things that bug me about this series.
Like when did Marvel Comics make it so that only Jamie Madrox "Prime" could create duplicate Multiple Men? I've been reading books with Multiple Man in it for nearly 30 years. His duplicates could create duplicates back in FALLEN ANGELS and X-FACTOR. But apparently not now -- and it's always been that way. Right?
Also, I hate how Jean Grey and the other X-Men have sidelined younger members of the team like Armor, Pixie, Rockslide, and Glob Herman. These younger X-Men have actively fought with the X-Men against evil mutants, sentinels, vampires, mutant zombies, and demons for years. In some cases, going back before Jean Grey was killed the last time. It makes no sense that the team is suddenly treating them like rookies in this book.
For context, Jean Grey recently led a team of X-Men in X-MEN RED. She recruited a brand new mutant named Trinary for the team and fully incorporated her into the team even without any formal training. In fact, she brought Gentle, of all mutants, onto the team even though he's never been on any of the main teams before. So she's obviously not anti-rookie. So why talk down to Armor and the others??
What to know what finally sold me on this latest UNCANNY X-MEN book? It brought Maggott back into the fold!! Maggott is one of my favorite obscure X-Men. I've written about him before on this blog. He has one of the most unique powers around. His digestive system consists of these two slugs (named Eaney and Meany) who can eating pretty much anything. They run around and fuel up and then return to Maggott's abdomen and charge him up. He then transforms from a skinny black kid to a hulking blue man with superhuman strength. He fought with the X-Men for about a week before getting captured and killed at a mutant concentration camp called Neverland. He was later resurrected by the villainous Selene.
I've spent the last decade wondering if he would ever return. And he finally did!!
Basically, Jean Grey and the X-Men were getting trounced by X-Man and his mind-controlled goons. So she mentally reached out to everyone who'd ever been an X-Man (or with X-Factor, or with the New Mutants, or with Excalibur, or with X-Force, etc...) in UNCANNY X-MEN #10 and summoned them for one final battle against X-Man!
And Maggott heeded the call!! Look at that blue face next to Jean Grey up above!! And look at that blue body next to Beast down below!!
Sadly, we didn't really get a chance to see Maggott in battle in UNCANNY X-MEN #11. But I'm assuming that he and his worms kicked ass against Nate Grey -- before getting blasted out of existence alongside all of the other X-Men...
But it's a good sign that we will be seeing more of Maggott in the upcoming AGE OF X-MAN books. In fact, he looks like he's going to be appearing in NEXTGEN, which is pretty good. Who knows what will happen after that?
