But I totally missed the news that somebody continues to target Mike Henninger and his animals. In fact, somebody has shot four of his zebras, a pregnant horse, and Henninger himself! It seems that Henninger was working on his property on October 28 when somebody shot him in the leg:
Mike was burning some brush on Sunday October 28, 2018 behind our rural home when he was shot! Mike lost a lot of blood but somehow managed to call 911. He was transported by ambulance to Oelwein hospital and then air lifted to Iowa city where he underwent a seven hour surgery to repair the damage to his leg. They had to use arteries from the other leg to bypass the damaged arteries. This left him with an 8 inch incision on both of his inner thighs. He developed compartment syndrome where the blood was collecting in his lower leg. He had a faciotomy, where the surgeaon made two five inch incisions, one on each side of his calf muscle to relieve the pressure and was necessary to save his leg. The faciotomy was left open for 3 days and then another surgery was performed to close those incisions. Mike recieved 2 blood transfusions and was released after 4 days only to return the next day for another blood transfusion. He was in Iowa City for a total of 8 days, 1 life flight and 2 ambulance rides. On top of all of this, over the last year, Mike has been mourning the loss of four of his beloved animals! All four were also the result of unidentified gunshots.According to his GoFundMe Page, Henninger's pet, Tazz the Zebra (mentioned above) was shot on 10/31/17. Dreamy the pregnant mare was shot in the head in August 2018. Zoey the Zebra was shot and killed in September 2018. Razzle the Zebra was shot to death on 10/13/18. And now Zena the Zebra was found dead yesterday.
The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office is reportedly investigating the shootings, but the shootings continue to occur.
