The Iowa City Rec Department has this playground featuring a miniature train and track, a carousel, and a ferris wheel. The train has been operating since 1952. Earlier this summer, the City of Iowa City announced that they were going to dismantle the train and the rest of the playground and replace it with a new playground. Basically, the current playground is too old and costs to much to maintain.
Today is actually the last day that the Iowa City train and carousel will be available for use. The city has been offering free rides on weekends since August. So if you want your train fix and you don't want to pay for it, rush over to Lower City Park right now and have some fun!
However, if you want to keep riding on the train and on the carousel and you don't mind paying for it, you should check out this government bidding website. All of the city rides are up for bid right now.
The miniature train and track currently have a bid of $22,000. The carousel has a bid of $10,000. There's an airplane ride with a current bid of $2,000 and a ferris wheel with bidding at $1,025. The whale ride (my favorite) also has a current bid of $1,025. Bidding will remain open through 10/19/18.
