In this segment, the lesbian waitress doesn't have a tattoo. But she's wearing a rainbow pin on her shirt. The Christian couple notices the waitress' wedding ring. They ask about her husband and the waitress clarifies that she has a wife and begins telling them about her, even offering to share a picture. The Christian couple immediately shut her down and challenge her about being a lesbian. "Is this a gay rights thing?"
Now let's set aside the notion that the waitress is wearing a rainbow pin at work, or that she has the time to stand around chatting with customers in a busy restaurant showing off pictures of her wife.
Instead, the waitress just stands there dumbfounded like a deer caught in headlights. The couple berates her and she just stands there taking it, neither defending herself with a basic "not your business" retort nor disengaging from the couple and hoping that they leave soon.
It's up to the other customers to step up and defend the waitress from the rude Christian customers. And they do. Most of them tell the Christian couple to shove off. Especially when they decided to refuse a tip, writing the same language used in the Rockford case.
The waitress would then get this defeated look when she'd pick up the slip with the $0 tip, which would be followed by hugs and promises by others to cover her missing tip.
It was interesting to see everyone rally to the lesbian's defense. I just wish that the lesbian would rally to her own defense a bit more. This Christian couple is one set of customers in a string of customers that the waitress would encounter each day. She should either cut them off, or leave them.
