Tonight's "Coronation Street" was equal parts excitement and let down as Pat Phelan was finally taken down after months of villainy. The British soap had been hyping his final downfall for weeks and I was expecting the actual take-down to be more of an event. But it actually went down pretty quickly.
At the end of last night's episode, Phelan accidentally fired his gun and shot one of three characters: his wife Eileen, his daughter Nicola, or his former protege Seb. He had been trying to kidnap his newborn grandson and these folks weren't about to let that happen. Anyway, Nicola was the one to take his bullet.
Phelan took his gravely injured daughter over to the Bistro, where Michelle and Robert were getting married. He demanded that Ali and Rana -- a doctor and a nurse, respectively -- save Nicola, but it was quickly apparent that they couldn't do much more than stabilize Nicola long enough to get her to a hospital. So Phelan grabbed a new hostage, the bride Michelle, and left to hide-out in the Bistro's kitchen so that Nicola could get help from an ambulance.
Unknown to Phelan, Anna Windass was waiting for them in the kitchen. A brief struggle ensued, resulting in Michelle getting shot. But Anna quickly recovered and stabbed Phelan in the chest. Helped quickly arrived and stabilized Michelle, but nobody could save Pat Phelan. He ended up bleeding to death, looking into Anna's sneering face.
Keep in mind that Phelan took delight in tormenting Anna for years. He raped her and destroyed her family. And he then framed her for an attempted murder that resulted in her being sentenced to prison for five years (Jon's Note: Looks like her prison sentence was recently overturned and she is now free.) She's been telling everyone that he's no good, but no matter how many people he killed, no matter how many people he stole money from, Pat Phelan was like teflon. Until tonight.
Now that Pat Phelan is dead, Anna Windass plans on starting fresh in another community with her daughter Faye. And Eileen, Nicola, and Seb now have the opportunity to move forward with their own lives too.
