Huckleberry Hound Commits Suicide in EXIT STAGE LEFT #5

I wrote last month about the tragic and tortured romance of Huckleberry Hound and Quick Draw McGraw, as portrayed in DC Comics' EXIT STAGE LEFT: THE SNAGGLEPUSS CHRONICLES. The romance ended in bloodied betrayal last month when Quick Draw bashed Huck during a police raid on the Stonewall Inn. Huckleberry was arrested and charged with public indecency and publicly humiliated in the newspapers.

I predicted that Huckleberry Hound would take his life. And he did indeed take his life in EXIT STAGE LEFT: THE SNAGGLEPUSS CHRONICLES #5. Huckleberry couldn't take the shame of his arrest, or the public revelation of his homosexuality.

So he hung himself in a grimy hotel room.

Huckleberry's suicide ended up fueling Snagglepuss' powerful and cutting testimony before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. We will have to wait until next issue to find out how things finally shake out with our lead character, though this issue ended with him cutting ties with all of his main supporting characters. My guess is that he's trying to protect them, but I cannot imagine that things will resolve that simply.

EXIT STAGE LEFT: THE SNAGGLEPUSS CHRONICLES features writing by Mark Russell, art by Mike Feehan, inks by Sean Parsons & Jose Marzan Jr., coloring by Paul Mounts, and lettering by Dave Sharpe.
