Pulse Survivor Comes Out as Ex-Gay

I haven't written too much about the 2016 mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, FL. One of my ex's former partners didn't die in the attack, but was present during the attack and died a few months later from a brain aneurysm. My ex still holds vigil for Chris and fights to keep him memory going. That's my "sixth degrees of separation" connection to the Pulse.

There's a post circulating on Facebook from another of the Pulse's survivors. Luis Javier Ruiz was at the club that night, but he ended up getting injured. He wrote a post professing his new Christian faith and what some are indicating as an ex-gay lifestyle:

I should of been of number 50 

Going through old pictures of the night of Pulse a memory were my struggles of perversion, heavy drinking to drown out everything and having promiscuous sex that led to HIV my struggles were real ! The enemy had its grip and now God has taken me from that moment and has given me Christ Jesus I'v grown to know his love in a deeper level. in this picture 2 of out of 49 my close friend on right and in back of me are no longer with us they lost there life that night. I should of been number 50 but now I have the chance to live in relationship and not religion not just loving christ but being in love with christ and sharing his love I know who I am and I am not defined with who the enemy says I use to be but who christ Jesus says I am.

A quick glance at his Facebook page indicates that he will be marching in something called the March 4 Freedom. Plus, there are various posts about freedom from homosexuality.

Personally, I don't have a lot of patience anymore for ex-gay belief systems. But it seems to be a process that too many people take when they retreat from living free of all religious expression and a wilder lifestyle. And it doesn't help that he lived through an extremely public and traumatizing incident.
